The concept of a Japanese Steakhouse is the show. Matsutake delivers a great show! I watched a couple of other tables while waiting for our show, and in every case, they did a great job! Our "chef" was entertaining and funny! We started with Sushi, which was very good and well-prepared. Moving to the salad and the soup. It is a variation on MISO. The soup was okay, but it was more chicken broth than true Miso. The salad was amazing. I love Ginger dressing! So the variation they throw, you get shrimp, noodles, and fried rice. The meat was perfect, soft, and perfectly prepared. Parking is so easy, and you can enjoy the show, then wander over and watch a movie (the theater is less than 25 feet away). I've been here twice, the first time it was a bit sub-par. Not bad, but not great. The first time was early on a Tuesday night, so imagine they're not at their best on a slow weekday. I ordered the hibachi steak, which is a New York strip. All of these entrees come with a TON of food as is typical of hibachi joints. You could definitely split a meal between two people easily. I find it very hard to complain between the quality of the meat and the sheer volume of food you receive in comparison to the price. My hibachi steak consisted of two good sized NY strips ($26.50), I was shocked when they were both for me after watching him cook it. I asked for medium rare, the steak was clearly more on the rare side. At least it wasn't over. Anything above a medium is a cardinal sin in my book. There was a couple at our table that ordered sushi as an appetizer and it came out at the end of the meal. The waitress kept telling them the sushi bar was backed up, but the place was clearly not busy at all. So there's that. The second time was much better. Much more lively and better service. I got the filet mignon (30.50) this time, medium rare. The cook was perfect, the filet was huge, and the meat was tender and juicy. I learned my lesson the first time and waited until the meat came so I could make sure I finished the important part. The ambiance here is well below other hibachi places I've visited. The bathrooms are filthy and the floors don't even look like they finished building the restaurant before they decided to open it. The chefs on the other hand are very skilled and very professional. Very nice and always smiling. I thought about giving 3 stars, but the quantity and quality of expensive cuts of beef earned it 4. Go check it out if you're hungry and want a quaint dinner, but for fancier occasions I'd explore other options. read more

While I didn't do the hibachi, which may be great, I had one of the Chef's sashimi plates (which may be why it wasn't the greatest) and it was nothing that would bring me back. This sushi/hibachi place is right off 85 in a convenient shopping plaza so parking is easy. We went on a weeknight and it wasn't busy but they had a steady flow of people so it speaks somewhat to quality. The sushi was good and it came out quick. Wait staff was efficient and the chef was very personable and talked to us for quite awhile while he was cooking. The sushi was above average, the hibachi was middle of the road. We split and we had enough for dinner and for lunch the next day so you get your money worth. It's more of a modern feel inside and it wasn't too loud. In all, there were no major issues. The salad is BATHING in ginger dressing but that is not a huge issue. Give it a try. read more

1st, I would give this Restaurant 6 Stars if I could. My Wife, Son and Daughter-in-law dined at the Matsutake Sushi and Steak House on Saturday of Labor Day Weekend for our Son's birthday and we were pleasantly surprised by the upscaled Quality and Quantity of Food we received and we have been going there to celebrate birthdays as long as the Business has been open in Frederick. It has been remodeled and we know over time that it's been under changing ownership, but never before has there been this big of a Dining Selection on the Hibachi or on the regular menu. On this latest visit, the Soup was very tasty, which is not typical and the salad was much larger and also very tasty with their House Dressing plentiful in the salad. I couldn't believe that my Wife required 2 plates and she ordered the Veggie Hibachi plate. Also, the 1st time ever that I actually had to take half of my food home, and I ordered the Filet Mignon and Shrimp. *1 Big Star Rating that must be mentioned is that their Shrimp was by far the Very Best tasting I have ever eaten their and actually regretted not getting the double-shrimp platter. read more

This was definitely one of those experiences where it was not spectacular, but it was not that bad either, and at the end of the day, I may consider coming back again, as this was probably more closer to a 3.5 star review. Me and a friend came by on a weekday night (I believe a Thursday) and it was not so shockingly slow that day and time. When we asked if we can do hibachi, we would unfortunately have to wait at least 15-20 minutes, so we just decided to eat at one of the regular tables (which was a first for me at a hibachi restaurant) Once we sat down, we received menus and service right away. We were served soup and salad, and we ate them, nothing special about the salad and soup. Not too long later, we got the main course, and I decided on the NY Steak and Scallops combo. When we received our plates, we realized the serving size was definitely enough to make hunger disappear. Unfortunately, I ordered my steak medium rare and I got mine well-done, so that was a blunder on their part, but the food itself tasted to as expected. I feel like I get a bit more meat on the hibachi tables, but this plate was not far off. The food had enough flavor and was able to finish everything. Overall, with the steak cooked wrong and the fact that I did not feel that I got enough value for what I paid for (probably because we did not do hibachi), I'd say this experience was up the middle, as I do think the service was excellent in this restaurant. read more

Now we all laughed the first time, but when I tell you this man only referred to chicken as 'cat' I mean ONLY. He must have made the joke 15 times! Unbelievable The Lo Mein noodles were "worms" and the tofu was actually "cheeseburger." Also, all of our meal choices were apparently "boring" which was confusing because he was the one cooking the food... but he was right. I tried this place with the family one night and we got seating away from the hibachi grills and I'd say the atmosphere was nice and quiet. Pricing was fair and food was great! Only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because the service wasn't the best. My uncle told the waitress how much he liked the song and jokingly asked her to turn the volume up. Prepare to be forgotten about. I really wanted to like this place, I really did. The smell from the outside was amazing, and the look through the windows looked appetizing to the eyes. That's about where all the good stopped. As you walk the floors you can feel the grip of your feet start to slip from the amount of whatever is spilled on the floor. The colorful bubble walls you can see from the outside, only half of them still work. I arrived at 4 to make a reservation. They told me they were booked until 7 so I made a reservation then. When we arrived at 7 they acted like we didn't even make a reservation and put us on the standby list. We were seated soon, so it was only a mild annoyance. Eager to try everything, I ordered one of the most expensive dishes on the hibachi menu. The ultimate combo of steak chicken and shrimp... and Fried Rice (an upcharge, not standard) the soup and salad were okay. Only cutlery offered was a single fork. At no point in the entire meal were chopsticks ever offered. The chef verified with each of us our order in turn around the table to make sure it was all correct. As one would expect. Serving the fried rice he skipped over me for an unknown reason. Once everyone else has been served, I was offered the little sliver that was left over. Not sure what happened there. Next came my steak... at least it should have, he put it on the wrong plate, the person next to me, not me. The chicken section was the only one served correctly... too bad it was overcooked and dry. At least the yum-yum sauce was able to cover that. Once the shrimp course was offered, I once again was overlooked. It was if I wasn't even on the order sheet at all, but how could that be if he went around the table and VERIFIED everyone's order? What ended up happening was that I was brought shrimp from the back long after everyone else was done eating. The bill came out, after constantly being forgotten expecting full price without even an apology for a mixup or anything. Left restaurant angry and underwhelmed with the entire experience. I really wanted to like this place. But this is a warning to everyone. Avoid this place. The smell does not justify the experience. read more

I was a bit sketchy about coming here due to the ratings, but really wanted to give it a chance due to the prime location. I was happy they were able to accommodate my family on short notice. The portions are massive and the staff was pleasant. So how could a restaurant in a prime location receive such low stars unless they are just REALLY bad. I'm this case I think it's quality. The restaurant could use a general overall and cleaning. Made me wonder about the sanitation and food prep. The food quality was probably a 4. Fresh is always better!! Sushi menu had food encrusted on it. Why do they put yum-yum sauce in the noodles - just gross! This place is absolutely DISGUSTING. As soon as you enter the restaurant, you are greeted with filth. A good chunk of the tables are situated right around where the dirty dishes are dumped off. We were given dirty dishes (soy sauce cups with left over rice in them) and our waitress was uninformed about the menu or the specials. The waitresses were too concerned with gossiping to deliver food, as they stood for 3 minutes with some bodies food in their hands. While waiting for our check we realized that they keep the drinking cups on a shelf that is 4 inches off the floor. Now the food - lackluster, at best. The sushi was decent but when we received the "shrimp and vegetables tempura" it was really just shrimp, one sweet potato, and the rest pieces of onion. Back in the day, my friends and i would go here on a monthly basis. Our trip would consist of Matsutake, movie followed by Maggie Moo's. When i moved to the Rockville area, that soon changed. When going back to Matsutake i had high expectations considering how awesome i used to remember it to be. But those were soon to be crushed upon walking through the doors. My friends and i made reservations worrying that it would have packed. But being an hour early the place was as empty as ever. Being seated immediately with two other groups. Service was alright i guess. Nothing i can remember standing out. For the place being as empty as it was, it sure did take the chef a long time to get to our table. I ordered the Hibachi Chicken and Double Fried Rice. I can't remember specifically how much it was but what i can remember was that it was definitely around $30. Not to mention that there's an extra charge for the fried rice now. With the fried rice now having an extra charge to it, i was told later on when i brought it up to the waiters attention. It was outrageous. With spending that kind of money for chicken, it really was just for the entertainment value in things rather then the actual food. The chicken was extremely bland and dry. Not to mention as it was cooking i was wondering when he would take it off the grill because long behold it was over cooked. The fried rice was lacking flavor as well. Needed more salt and pepper or soy sauce. Personally i dump the Seafood Sauce they give you all over my fried rice which made things a lot better. The vegetables were good. A little to soft rather then al dente. Miso soup was okay. The "complimentary" tossing shrimp was tough which means it was a bit over cooked as well. Not to mention my friends order was completely messed up that the chef had to ask the waiter to go back and make an order of shrimp. Overall i've had better. OK. What you need to do is either come here for Hibachi during dinner or the sushi lunch buffet. Anything else leads to a 2 star experience. The Sushi lunch buffet is worth every dollar, of course it's only $10... but still. They have a decent variety of sushi and rolls in addition to some Korean side vegetables and hot foods. It gets packed during lunch, they'll always have seating, however, it just means you may have to wait a little longer for the sushi to come out. Had a birthday celebration here for a family member. Made reservations for 5:30 on a Monday evening in mid June. Amazingly busy for a Monday night. We were seated promptly. They took our orders. Asked about allergies and were very accommodating for someone that didn't want soy or teriyaki. The portions were huge and we all took leftover boxes home. The "chef" was very funny and entertaining. We purchased the birthday package-- they came out with a piece of cake and ice cream with a candle. They sang happy birthday while beating on a drug. The guest of honor loved the "mug" that came with the birthday package ($9.95). The food was deliciously well seasoned and cooked to perfection. It was a wonderful experience. Unbelievably horrible experience! I'm astonished this place remained open during COVID. They pack people in here like sardines and do not care. Our server was clueless; she was also the bartender. Oh and the manager was also the hostess. But that's for a another 1 star review. Never got appetizer and server looked like a deer in headlights when asked about it as if she never even put it in. Forgot drink and had to remind her. Sushi took 45 min and was all wrong. Everything we touched was sticky and dirty. One plus is they had hand sanitizer on the table which I cleaned the table with. The manager came over at the end and did void the check because she seemed so overwhelmed like she couldn't handle one more dissatisfied customer. Worst Habachi place ever- restaurant felt like cheap fast food. Kacey the front hostess is as rude as can be and her time quotes to wait for a table are way off. Told us 30 mins, an hr later was sat but didn't even bring us the right amount of menus. Chicken was over cooked and very chewy, rice was undercooked and crunchy. Vegetables were burnt and mushy because they were way overcooked. Waitress took so long to bring out our son's ice cream for his bday , he already left to go home with his older sister.
