Maybe it was because we wandered in not to long before closing, or maybe it was because it was Sunday , or maybe it was just because it was just I chose the wrong item off the menu , but this place was just plain ol yuck! I ordered their chicken parm, he ordered the perch dinner. He seemed to like his meal pretty well, but mine was just inedible. I picked and scratched at it while waiting for him to eat ( I ate my garlic bread ). When the waitress came to gather out plates and to drop off the bill she never questioned the full plate she was taking away, just collected our money and smiled as they unlocked the door to let us out . I was feeling pretty "unwell" way into the following night. Would I eat here again ? Absolutely not! Would I say that no one should ever eat here ? No. I'm going to try and say maybe the cook was having an off day, or after a day of traveling, maybe I was...., but I think I'll eat elsewhere if I ever find myself in Ludington Michigan. read more

This place is disappointing. Half the stuff tastes like it's out of a can, the sausage looks like it's from a package, the bacon is soggy and the hash is canned. We make better breakfast at home. Not sure why people get excited over homemade bread. I guess your mom never made anything from scratch. read more

We miscalculated our rations for our week camping at Ludington State Park, and had to head into town for breakfast one day. This was the spot we found (saw it advertised in one of the local papers). The décor was a bit dated, but the staff (and local patrons) were very friendly. A good taste of the local culture! We partook of the breakfast buffet, and were pleased with the offerings and quality of the food, especially considering that it was a buffet. read more

Old Hamlin's breakfast/brunch is the best in Ludington. When they get busy it seems to take much longer than it should to get people seated, order, served and out the door. A sign at the door explains that their food is homemade so it takes longer than it would otherwise. Doesn't explain the waiting to sit with twelve cluttered tables waiting to be bused or waiting to order and pay. If you're not in a hurry - your food quality will be well worth the wait. read more

Old Hamlin is a Ludington staple. I've been coming to Ludington for 30 years now.... and the Old Hamlin is always one of our stops. I guess they serve dinner too, but in all of my time here I have only ever been there for breakfast and lunch. Years ago they started this breakfast buffet which is a little below average. Walking into the Old Hamlin is like walking back to 1970. The decor has not been updated since then. Fortunately, the food is up to date. Portions are huge! The omelettes are large and well prepared. It has become a tradition for my family to come here on our way home after picking up one of our kids from Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp every summer. It is really a throwback kind of place, nothing fancy and definitely family friendly and prices are more than reasonable. But there are a few things that I think make it worth my 4 star rating. First, the waitstaff is always very friendly and helpful, always offering to let us make any changes, within reason, to make us happy. Second, I actually get a kick out of places like this, that are a bit dated (ok, a lot dated), but still have a charm to them. Third, it is a very clean restaurant, including the "facilities." Finally, while much of the food is on the simple, plain or average side, their simple homemade bread is quite good. They slice it with your order and the slices are at least as wide as Texas toast, if not wider. It is soft and fresh baked daily, And you can get a loaf or two, to go. The chicken noodle soup is my favorite dish to order, with the bread, of course. It has thick, homemade noodles, or something awfully close to homemade, and the flavor is perfect. Then there is dessert. The meringue pies are good, but so is the carrot cake. The desserts are also homemade and change, so we never know what they will have, but that is part of the culinary adventure. It is worth the stop if you have picky eaters, young kids or people on restricted diets with you or if you are NOT looking for fresh caught fish, aged steaks or traditional and authentic ethnic fare. read more

I always eat at Old Hamlin whenever I visit Ludington, which is about once a year for the last 23 years. Technically, I'm a "fudgie." Going to Old Hamlin is like going home. I prefer to eat here for breakfast, but lunch and dinner are just as good. Desert is great, too, because they have homemade pies. They relatively recently added a buffet that I've never tried, and I personally think that it just crowds the restaurant. But it doesn't keep me from going back for the homemade bread - which is to die for, and you can purchase a loaf to take home! YES! Pros: homemade bread is yummo, available in white wheat or cinnamon raisin, was thick cut and really the best part of our breakfast. Eggs and American fries were fresh tasting. Cons: bathroom had no TP, coffee was bland and may have been Maxwell house? Not sure but for $1.89 put in some extra scoops. Sorry Old Hamlin - not a fan. Food was decent, but the menu is "Jack of All Trades, Master of None". Somehow a club sandwich, chicken tenders dinner, kids tenders meal, 2 beers and a pop ended up at $50. I get there is history here, but if I spend $50 for a meal I will go somewhere that leaves me glad I chose to go there. I think a good part of our trouble was our waitress, as she had issues with other tables around us. I would proceed with caution, and check your receipt! We were driving through and stopped because of the reviews were good. So good and large portion, took half home. I a special-BBQ Ribs, fries and broccoli cheese soup, my husband had a Roger Burger, and veg-beef soup; both delicious. Homemade food:soups, bread, pies, cakes, cinnamon rolls. We were traveling though the area and stayed at a local Hotel Saturday night July 20, 2019, the next morning our hotel recommended this restaurant. We ordered our food and an hour and half later no food. This was brought to their attention with little to no response. We were a group of 17 people. One couple paid for their coffee and left. Finally one seasoned waitress took over and got our food out with in 10 minutes. Awesome job on her part. The biggest concern for me was no one there showed any kind of remorse for the long wait. The restaurant is wrapped in plastic which was very disturbing and when we were seated it took 30 minutes for us to get a waitress so we ordered all our food at once. It then took another 30-45 minutes while we waited for our food. A couple came in sat next to us and had finished their meal and paid before we even saw our food even though they came in after we ordered. When we finally got our food one of our dishes was brought to a table next to us and was reserved to us and was ice cold for a hot sandwich. The other food was ok but over all would not return. Also the waitress spent a ton of time at the table next to ours but couldn't even be bothered to check on us. We all had empty drinks and were ignored. Bacon Lettuce and Tomato Sandwich was horrible. Passing through Michigan and stopped by Old Hamlin for a quick cheeseburger. It was probably the worst cheeseburger I've ever eaten. Asked for medium-rare, it came out well-done, and I'm pretty sure the patty was one of those frozen patties from a box in the freezer section at a grocery store. Order from the menu for the best choices- one review refers to the Powdered eggs on the breakfast buffet-- NEVER ! I know for a fact they are not-- BUT, if you are one to go "on the cheap" you can't expect food kept warm over hot water to taste fresh! Nice restaurant. Wait staff very polite and friendly. We are there for most of our meals, for the two days we were there. The first night, the food was good. The second day, I went with their special; ribs, fries and a side (I chose a salad). I asked if I could get my ribs dry. When they came they looked horrible. I think they were boiled to start. The atmosphere is that of a typical family run American food serving joint. Quaint. Service is friendly. We all had the breakfast buffet. Mediocre at best.
