Stumbled upon this place randomly for lunch and loved it so much so we came back the next day for breakfast. We came here for lunch the other day and this place is solid. It reminds me of just a simple country cooking place. The server was nice and attentive. We ordered the Pancakes, eggs, and a BLT sandwich. The pancakes were huge and light and fluffy. It came with a side and we got a delicious breakfast sausage. The eggs were ok but a little over cooked for my taste. The BLT was simple but had a lot of bacon and tomatoes. Overall, this is a pretty good place in Buhl. Have been here twice - once for the Thursday fixed menu dinner and the next morning for breakfast. The dinner was great - the berry pie for dessert was the highlight for me. Breakfast was good - pretty standard fare. They have a big freezer of take home items. We got a 2 pack of cinnamon roles and a medium lasagna. Hubby and I shared a cinnamon role - 1/2 of one was plenty! - warmed in the micro with some butter - yummy. Just finished the take home lasagna- it was AWESOME. We are having a house built in Hagerman and once we have a big freezer, we are going to stock up on the frozen meals- just add a salad and bread for an amazing home-cooked meal. Service is very good and polite. Tip: arrived early for Thursday dinner - it was crowded by 6:30! By the way, this place is NOT fancy so don't expect white table clothes and they don't serve alcohol. This place is great. My wife and I have eaten here three times now and the food is always fantastic. I don't eat meat so I usually mix and match eggs and potatoes and oatmeal, pancakes, waffles, French toast, crepes, etc. The fact that I can basically hobble together whatever breakfast foods I want on that particular day and not end up paying a bunch of extra money is a big deal for me. Good tasting food, good portions, good price, what else do you need? Service could be a little friendlier I suppose but it's not bad. I don't think it's fair to expect my server at a small breakfast joint to be mega chipper at 7:30am. I have eaten at Old Home Cooking probably 5 or 6 times now and it is always the same. Pretty good. The sausage gravy had no sausage in it but the gravy is tasty and good consistency. Their Chicken Fried steak is a good size portion and very crunchy on the outside and tender in the inside. Pancakes are quite fluffy and their vanilla syrup is really good. So... why only 3 stars? Service. Its really slow and uncomfortable. The waitresses must be warned not to show any emotion because there is not a smile among them. Our silverware was thrown to us by the waitress who stood at one end of the table without moving. When drinks came, she handed all the drinks to one person and expected us to pass it down, even though she could have walked around the table. When the food came, (20 min later), she spilled overflowing gravy on my wife's purse and didn't offer to clean it up. Then she dropped the plates in front of one person for them to pass it around. The food came out one order at a time and 4-5 minutes apart. This is the best choice for a small town with limited breakfast options. read more
