The tour was very nice, however the road up to the mine is unpaved and three miles from town with no service. My family and I were stranded for two hours as we got two flat tires. The staff were not present, as we were the last tour of the day, they left quickly as we were loading our family in our car. It was a scary situation. So again this is a nice tour but be aware of the distance from town and unpaved roads if you plan to go. read more

It just seemed like the thing to do given all of the mining history in the state of Colorado. Yes it was overpriced but we had a good time. Seniors are $2 cheaper. The drive in from town was pretty bumpy and dusty. I guess when you live in Western Colorado driving on dirt/gravel roads is no big deal. We now understand why there are so many car washes around here! Bob was a great tour guide and we learned a bit about gold mining in this area. The train ride was fun as was the demonstration of the mining equipment. I know some think the panning for "gold" is stupid but it seemed to fit the cheesy nature of the experience. My husband and I stumbled upon this hidden gem and we were glad we did! What a great spot and tour of the mine. I've not done a mine tour before but this tour was definitely worth it. Our tour guide took us 1500 ft. back into the mine and showed us some the equipment they used when mining started to present day. Excellent tour guide. I had never been in a mine before so this was a first. It was an impromptu stop during our drive along the San Juan Skyway and was worth the detour. Our guide was informative and had a great sense of humor. Learned more about mining in one hour then I would have thought possible. The road out to it is dusty so expect to wash your vehicle afterwards. Oh, and it's cold in the mine! Be prepared. read more

Great 1 hour tour of an old shut down mine. Was last used in 1971 and has 6 levels of mining as high as 13,000 ft. Only the lowest 1st level is on the tour. A lot of mine equipment is demonstrated. Our guide was a retired miner himself so was very knowledgeable. You also get to pan for minerals before or after your tour and keep what you find. read more

Apparently I like this tour; I've taken it three times! It's better than other mine tours I have taken because of the demonstrations of real, loud, working equipment. I especially like the mine cart with a scoop to pick up and load ore. Each visit, I have learned something different. Every guide has been a retired miner. They know their stuff, and they want to share that knowledge with you. The price of $19 for adults and $10 for kids is worth it. You'll want to dress somewhat warm, because it is cool and wet down there. They provide a raincoat and hardhat. read more

One of the highlights of our trip was the tour into the Old Hundred Gold Mine. We checked in early so we could have time to spend looking at old artifacts (including the miners who ran the place). When the tour begins, you get a yellow slicker and a hard hat, trust me, you will need the slicker as it is 47 degrees underground. We all boarded a yellow mine train and into the mine we traveled with our real miner guide. He showed us all the equipment used in mining throughout the past 150 years including a honeypot for down under. Because he was a miner, we heard a lot of good stories about people who bought these mines he worked in and about the people he has work with, including the tommy knockers who were always playing tricks on miners. At the end of the tour, we got to pan for gold which is becoming a hobby of mine. Be sure to look up at the Old Hundred Boarding House (a Colorado Historic Landmark); this house is 2000 feet above the mine and has been clinging to the cliffs since 1904. This is a real thumbs up tour. read more

Wonderful tour, rode a small train in and then walked in the mine. Guide was very knowledgeable about mining. Adults learned a lot, kids loved the dripping water and noise - they give you hard hats and slickers. Take the time to do this and you'll have a new appreciation for miners. read more

This tour was great! Our tour guide was excellent and my 12 year old really had a 'blast'! I'm claustrophobic, so entering the tunnel was initially nerve wracking for me, but after a few seconds, I actually enjoyed the ride. The guide used to be a miner (his name escapes me) and he had such great information to share. He was funny as well. We hung around after the tour for an hour while my son panned and we walked the grounds looking at the various miner equipment around the picnic area. We also headed down the short walk to see the old boarding house WAY up the mountainside! A must do while visiting Silverton. read more

Easily one of the best spots to see, don't miss it! It's one of the better things we have done in Durango/Silverton. Kids got to pan for gold and gemstones while we waited for the tour. We were all given hardhats and rain slickers with fun miner names on them. Once dressed we rode the little tram into the mine. Had a great tour of the different tools that were used starting with the earliest hand tools down to the pneumatic tools. It was a fun and historic time had by all! This was a fun tour for all ages. Our tour guide Rusty is a miner so he provided a wealth of information on the mine, equipment and mining in general. The tour included a warm raincoat and hard hat to keep you dry and warm as it was cold and damp in the mine. Because we went at the start of the season, we ended up getting a private tour, which was really excellent. The guide knew the mining process, was very friendly, and we had a great time. Best Mine Tour around!!! It is about $18 for adults and $9 for children. Unlike most mine tours this one requires a 1/3 mile train ride and you get to wear a rain jacket/hard hat. Tour takes about 1 hour but is definitely worth the time and money to stop here. Our tour guide Joe was very knowledgeable and knew about not only old mining techniques but the mining industry of today. Bring a jacket/pants because it is 47 degrees Fahrenheit down in the mine year round. And as an added bonus you can pan for gold/silver. This place is tucked back on a little dirt road which adds to the character of the place. Last but not least this place runs tours every hour starting at 10:30 and they start at half past the hour after that. read more

The Old Hundred tour was one of the highlights of our Colorado vacation. I loved it. Getting to deep into the cold, wet mountain shaft is the only way to develop an understanding about what the miners endure. This is not just a static walk through! Our guide was a miner for many years. He talks from real experience...not from a script. Your ride a 1/3 into the mountain on an actual piece of mining equipment. The guide demonstrated several pieces of the mining equipment during he tour, including drills and a ore car loader. I recommend it highly. It is kid friendly, but it is not for someone that is mobility challenged. You need to sit on a very low bench, with limited leg room, during the ride into the mine. You will also have to walk on some uneven, wet surfaces. read more

This was so much fun! Our tour guide was a miner himself, full of useful info. The kids loved panning for gold afterwards. They included coats and hard hats to wear. My family was not impressed by the tour. We went in mid-July and they crammed the tour so full that it was impossible for everyone to hear/see what the guide was discussing because the tunnels are narrow (as you'd expect). People were just snaked down the tunnel in each direction trying to work out what was being presented. The tour consists of 5-6 stops on a short walking tour through the mine. We thought we'd learn more than we did and our guide just wasn't very charismatic or interesting even when we could hear him. A five mile drive down a dirt road to get here from Downtown Silverton. We were not offered (or see) any gold panning. Open mine cars into a tunnel then loud drill noise as the first stop of the tour. If you have small children consider whether they will be scared by that. Would not recommend this tour. read more

Our entire party of 6, including a picky 12 year old, enjoyed this mine tour. We had been touring the surrounding mountains and noticed the amazing Old Hundred boarding house 2,000 feet above the bottom of the mountain, which led us to the tour. It was very interesting and informative. If you are in the area, I would suggest it. read more
