Days before our reservation, they told us they didn't have our jeeps, vehicles were gone, and they might cancel part of our trip. We tried everything on our end, different vehicles, different dates, but it didn't fit around lodging we'd already committed to. In the end, weeks of planning fell apart because they simply could not deliver what we'd already paid for. Instead of making it right, they kept 10% plus fees, the exact penalty written for a customer who backs out on their own. We didn't back out. They failed to deliver and charged us for it anyway. When we laid out the facts in writing, we got the same scripted policy line back, no acknowledgment, no accountability. When we followed up again asking for what we're still owed, by text and by phone, we got silence. No reply. No answer. A family trip planned months out, upended days before departure, and the company that caused it never bothered to make it right. Book here at your own risk.

As a…read morenascent paranormal investigator, I visit spiritually active places around the nation (typically ones off the beaten path) and conduct ITC (instrumental trans-communication) research using a variety of devices and apps. I happened upon Hillside Cemetery on a recent road trip to Colorado. Old cemeteries tend to elicit fewer responses, but I felt drawn to this beautiful burial ground and its ornate, weathered tombstones. At the very least, I wanted an excuse to breathe in the crisp mountain air and admire the scenery. After introducing myself to any spirits who might have been present, I launched my Spiritus app and began listening for disembodied voices. About thirty minutes passed with nothing conclusive, just random, unaltered phonetic sounds. As I approached a shaded area towards the top of the hill, however, I began hearing clear, undebunkable names, words, and phrases. The name "May" came through several times. I walked a few steps up the hill and happened upon a grave belonging to May Rickard, an "unfortunate girl" who passed away in 1899. I asked, "May Rickard, if that's you, can you tell me what happened?" I then heard "overdose...suicide." Her tombstone validated these words; she had apparently died of alcoholism and morphine. Before I could ask a followup question, another female voice added "hooker." I glanced to my right and saw Minnie Morgan's grave. On her tombstone was the same epitaph: "An Unfortunate Girl" but with the word "prostitute" in parentheses. I then realized that all graves in this section bore the same euphemistic epitaph. As I was preparing to leave, I wished May and Minnie farewell and heard what I consider to be a desperate plea: "No...don't...help!" I realized at this point that I was perhaps the first person to communicate with these poor souls in over a century. Even if you are skeptical of the paranormal, this cemetery is worth a visit. You will learn much about Silverton's storied past.

The cemetery is in a beautiful spot on a hill that overlooks the town of Silverton in the valley below, and the surrounding mountains. It's also provides great insight to the history of the town and surrounding area. I would suggest going during the day to walk around and read the information boards and tombstones, and maybe taking a picnic lunch. I would also suggest returning at night to do a ghost walk. I would also suggest wearing a diaper, in case you do run into an old miner's ghost and can't control your bladder.This place runs pretty high on my "Pee Your Pants" scale.

It's not for everyone, but if you give it a try, you'll fall in love with the place. Its a lodge, it's sort of a bed-and-breakfast (make your own breakfast), and it's a hidden gem. The owners have lovingly restored the building into a comfortable, rustic, funky place of refuge. There are 17 bedrooms available on the second floor, with five shared baths. The main floor has a h-u-g-e kitchen with every appliance available, two stoves, a refrigerator and everything you need to prepare food for two or forty people. You can also have your meals catered. A table that seats 20+ people and a huge serving area make it perfect for family gatherings and corporate retreats. The living room has couches and chairs that beg to be curled up in, and the library has a wall full of books, a pot belly stove, and more chairs and couches that will force you to relax (as if you need to be forced). The second floor bedrooms are rustic and comfortable. One side of the lodge faces the Animas river, the other faces an aspen grove. The bathrooms are simple, but have everything you need. They are not ADA accessible, and the stairs are a good workout (especially at 10,000 feet elevation). For the wedding or retreat, there is a full, walk in basement with a bar, more bathrooms and a meeting area that will hold a bunch of people. Their setup for weddings is amazing; check out their website for more information. There is also a hot tub, a monster balcony overlooking the Animas River, fishing, and the ghost town of Animas Forks just up the road. I stayed here for a small corporate retreat and it was a huge success. The hardest part of the retreat was focusing on work and not on the scenery. I'll be going there again with my husband for a quiet weekend. The lodge is open in the winter, but it requires a 1/4 mile snowshoe, x-c ski or snowmobile ride to get to the lodge. Oh, and did I mention that there is no TV and no cell phone service? The internet is slow and unpredicable, but it gives you a great opportunity to unplug for a while and enjoy your surroundings and each other. Rustic comfort - give the Eureka Lodge a try.

The whole experience was top notch from start to finish. The five hour excursion included stunning views of the area along with falls, wildlife, and abandoned mines. Our guide, Dave was very knowledgeable of the area and was very accommodating of our requests for stops along the way and answering our many questions. As a previous owner of a 4x4 with many hours on and off the trail, I felt very comfortable with both the equipment and Dave. Highly recommend!

We booked a moderate run with class 1-3 rapids, since we had a big range of ages (my Dad is 77 and we had a party of 10 with ages ranging down to my 10-y-o son). They advised that this would be best for our family, and they were correct. I'd love to come back and do some class 3-4 rapids now that we have had some experience.
