Out of everything we did on our vacation to Colorado, this is the part we were most excited about. We went on the "Cave Ride" which is an hour in the saddle and about 30 minutes taking a short hike to a cave and is described as a "beginner level" trail. The cost is normally $180, but if you pay in cash or check it's $170. Your horse is selected based on your size. The woman who we paid and who gave us the waivers to fill out (basically saying that you absolve the company if you choose to not wear a helmet) was extremely polite and friendly. She told us which horses we would be riding, gave us a saddle bag to store any drinks or snacks we bought, made sure we got helmets that fit (there was no helmet large enough to fit my gigantic dome, sadly) and gave us some free bug spray. Sunscreen was not provided, but we brought our own. Our horses were great. They are obviously trained, but aren't the kind of horses you will find on other rides that follow the trail no matter what you do. These horses needed (minor) guidance but were well-behaved. My wife's horse kept stopping to eat grass and had terrible flatulence, but it was only a big deal for me because I was riding right behind her. She has essentially no horse-riding experience but was able to complete the ride without incident. Our main tour guide, though, was awful. There were several children on our ride (note to parents: your children just sit on the horse while the guides pull their pony by a lead) and the guide was obviously not child-friendly. The kids asked lots of questions, as you would expect kids to do, and the guide was very terse and irritable with the kids. It made us not want to ask any questions because, if she's rude to kids, who knows how she'll act towards adults. There was a second guide who rode in the middle of the group, and she was very friendly and polite. It didn't help that our group was large. There were 11 riders and 2 guides, and one of the guides remarked how it was an unusually large group. This was a problem because the guides would turn around and talk to the group and, being at the back of the group, we heard almost none of it. I know some of it was valuable information - how to lean in the saddle when going up or down steep inclines - but I don't know if the rest was riding tips or information about the area or the horses because I didn't hear any of it. The cave was interesting but small - no need to worry about heavy-duty cave exploring. While we were in the cave taking photographs, the main guide loudly complained to the other about her work schedule, which we all heard because we were in a cave and everything echoes. Guide #2 was very sweet about taking pictures of all of us in the cave (they came out really well) and pointing out hazardous areas on the trail (like where the poison ivy was). About the riding trail itself - it was rocky, muddy and steep. I have ridden horses quite a bit, and I was surprised about how difficult the terrain was for a ride labeled for "beginner level." Everyone seemed to have a good time and enjoy themselves though, and there were no issues with anyone navigating the trail. The horses were very sure-footed and if you came to an area you were unsure how to navigate, the horse would do most of the work for you. Overall I feel like my opinion of this experience may be clouded by one guide that was exceptionally rude. Maybe she was having a bad day, or maybe it was because we were the last ride of the day and she was tired, but the entire time it felt like she was irritated with everyone in the group and did not want to be there. The horses were great, the trail was fun, and honestly I would go back to the corral for a ride if I was assured that we would have a different guide than the one we had this time. She made the experience uncomfortable and left us feeling disappointed in what we thought was going to be the highlight of our trip. read more

We have ridden with Rapp for three summers in a row now and we'll continue to ride with them for many to come. There are a few specific reasons for this: 1. They treat their horses VERY well and this should be very important to you, as a rider and a decent human being. These horses are loved and very well cared for. Each trail leader we've had has commented on the high level of care that Ann gives these horses and it shows. Every horse we've ridden has been a great, happy horse. 2. Ann empowers women and girls. The majority of employees at Rapp are women and that's not an accident. Ann also has younger girls come volunteer their time to learn how to work the corral and take care of the horses. Very cool. 3. Their location- right by Haviland Lake and across from the gorgeous red cliffs. Yes, they just burned this summer, but there is still plenty of beauty to behold in that area. Do yourself and your family a favor and ride at Rapp. It is quality fun all the way around. read more

This place was amazing. The guider was very very nice and the horses are obviously very well trained. They teach you the basics and then you have your own freedom which is very nice. They may remind you sometimes of something but thats only for you to have more fun and the horse to be comfortable. They have helmets for all sizes and the horses are very clean. I got a horse named gravy and he was very very trained and had a lot of power. This place is amazing and I recommend you go here. Would come here again for this much fun and excitement!!!! Incredible, to say the least. My parents and I had a week-ish long trip to CO planned, and the one thing I absolutely needed to do was ride a horse. We just sort of put our finger on the map, landed on Durango, and searched for a ride near there. We were between Rapp and another livery nearby--both had all 5 star reviews-- and just chose Rapp for its closer location to the town. We called the Friday of Memorial Day weekend to see if we could get a ride for the next day, and we were lucky to score spots for the three-hour Miner's Trace tour. After doing so, we headed for a bar in town and after striking up a conversation with a nice local, she told us that Rapp was "very reputable," so we were excited to know that Rapp was as good as Yelp says! The corral is located in a beautiful valley in the San Juan National Forest and is very clean and well-kept. It's clear that the horses are loved and cared for, just like their home. The horses are all different colors and they are so beautiful. Now for the actual ride. We had two others with us-- a mother and daughter-- who were from the area and our guide, Tracy. The small group was perfect to get to know each other and have an easy conversation on the trail. Tracy was giving fun facts about the area, asking about our lives back home, and checking in to make sure we were all still comfortable and felt good with our horses. We rode in the San Juan National Forest, up and down hills and past old mines. Very beautiful and scenic! We had plenty of photo opportunities and Tracy was always happy to take our phones and snap a shot of us. Logistics wise, it was easy to book. You can pay either through the phone with card or in person, card or cash. There is a discount if you pay in cash! :) They will ask for each member's riding history, height and weight to make sure everyone is placed on the appropriate horse. Get there early so you don't have to waste riding time with checking in and adjusting the saddle, etc. Call ahead!! There was a family who walked up hoping for a ride and they were all booked. Another fun thing about Rapp is the owner has a connection with movie production companies. They have had horses appear in feature-length films! read more

Our family went on the Rapp Corral sleigh today to wrap up our holiday festivities. It was so much fun!! The drive up was breathtaking and the weather was perfect! Reservations are easy to make and payment is cash only. We were greeted by the cute resident dog and cat. We rode in our own sleigh with an awesome duo of Clydesdales named Clyde and Wilbur. Our guide, Jody was super friendly and engaging. (Take some extra cash to tip your guide!) The sleigh ride was about an hour long taking us by Haviland Lake. There's a fire pit to sit around to enjoy hot chocolate and roast marshmallows before and after the sleigh ride. The property and horses are very well taken care of. We gained our experience with Rapp Corral as part of a package with the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. This part of the package included shuttle service from Silverton to the corral, the trail ride to/from a cave, minor spelunking in the cave, and shuttle service back to Durango afterward. The horses had been warmed up and outfitted prior to our arrival. Each horse was well trained and obviously used to strangers. We were warned that it would be feeding time for them right after the trail ride, so they may decide to try to dine early on the fresh, new spring grass growth. My horse tried several times, but immediately responded to my corrections. Though I'd only had a few prior riding experiences, this horse was so well trained he made me look like a seasoned rider. Our trail guides were two college aged girls with loads more equine experience than I'll ever have. They were personable, competent and attentive to each rider, the horses and the group overall. The cave was intended as an interesting and different destination from the typical trail ride. While this was not a caver's heaven, it filled the bill of giving the horses a rest and the riders an experience they may not have had before. What a great riding experience! My family decided to do the two hour ride which was awesome :) We haven't ridden much but we had a great time with our guide Lucy and our beautiful horses Charley, Banjo, Doc, and Little Park. Lucy was always giving us tips throughout the ride to help us be more comfortable which was great, especially for us novice riders. The scenery was beautiful and the trails were well kept. The horses knew where they were going so they didn't need too much direction, but they did try to eat the oak leaves on the side of the path! I was super excited when we had the opportunity to trot our horses for awhile :) The only thing I thought was strange was when we arrived at the Corral it was hard to find anyone! I guess they were all with the horses and finally someone came over to set us up with the release forms, but there definitely was a lack of direction when we arrived (and since this was our first time it was kind of annoying). Overall great ride though! We had a lot of fun but beware, two hours on a horse will take a toll on your thighs! read more

We are in Durango for a week for a family vacation so my daughter and I came to Rapp for a ride. There are a number of trail ride options in the Durango area, but we were interested in their cave ride, which we found out is their most popular option. We arrived prior to the ride as requested and briefly looked around. I've only ridden a couple of times but my daughter, age 11, takes lessons and rides at least once a week. A lot of stables offering this experience take care of their horses but not all take care of their facility, but Rapp does both. My daughter got a small bay named Doc and I got a big draft named Clyde. Both were obviously well-taken care of, happy with their work and their wranglers. Our guide, Timbery, took us through beautiful country in the San Juan National Forest. The horses know the way so very little control is necessary even up and down some steep slopes; if you've never ridden you can do this. Beautiful aspens and pines, mountains, cliffs-what amazing country! Timbery was friendly, personable, and very informative. She made us all feel welcome and part of the group, and Rapp is lucky to have her. If you go for the cave trip, know that it's a short walk down a steep trail. Take your time and you can do it? It's a small, hidden cave, with a chance to explore deep back in the cool underground spaces under the hillside. Well worth it! We very much enjoyed our ride with Rapp Corral and would recommend them to anyone looking for a fun and scenic trail ride in the Durango area. read more

My family and I paid for the one hour ride and would do it again in a heart beat. We would recommend Shaylee and Joe as trail guides. We had them and they were incredible. Shaylee was VERY personable and we loved her. Joe was very insightful and told us many things about horses and their behavior. He even played the ukulele for us! The horses were so well behaved and funny. The crew highly recommends wearing helmets. I could see where they are coming from but my family of seven did not wear them. The crew also offers to pack rain coats for us. We saw quite a few deer and the trail itself was incredible. The horses would take us up steep paths of rocks and roots. This place is great!! We took the sleigh ride into the snowy mountains. Yes it was cold but I promise it is beautiful and snowing so hard we were covered when we got back. We picked up Santa elves on the way back and Santa arrived and gave all the kids a present, we brought. My wife and I had a picturesque three hour ride in a pine and aspen forest along lakes ,waterfalls and streams. Ann pointed out an abandoned mine as we stopped along the way to have a snack and a break. Her dog Lilly accompanied us on the ride and provided much entertainment as she ran along ahead. Working for a outfitting company, I was going into this experience with a bar of high standards. When we arrived we were greeted by the woman who we talked with on the phone. She was wonderful, kind with great manners. The ride before us had started late so we had to wait around till we could get on our horse, but we didn't mind the wait because we chatted and looked at the horses, also gave us time to fill out paperwork and for Christina to tell us what horse we would be riding. Once the ride returned, the guide, Timbery greeted us with a great professional attitude, and immediately got to work on getting us onto our horses. The two hour ride was beautiful, and Timbery was very kind, and we spoke about our experiences being wranglers and enjoying the beautiful forests. Even though, horses would be horses, they are on the trail, but the best part was when we would trot on the flat parts. Incredibly beautiful part of America. Anne Rapp's location a short 7 miles from Durango Mountain Resort. We signed up for the 3 hour "Miners" ride, which was wonderful. The trail is fairly new, and the climbs were something most of us had never done before. The horses were all beautiful and very obviously well maintained. Riding here was a blast and well worth the money. Our guide was Taryn and she was so fun and knowledgeable. The three hour ride went by way too fast - we wanted more! My husband rode on Marshall and I rode Bear. Be true to your ability (beginning, intermwdiate, etc) because the rides can be strenuous. The views are breathtaking! My cousin and I were visiting the Durango area and our plan was to go horseback riding. I checked Yelp and found Rapp Corral. After reading reviews I also went to their website to do a little more research and It seemed that they really care about their horses and that's very important to me. Just as their website stated, their horses were just beautiful. They were clean, shiny, well fed, and the riding equipment and the stable in general was in very good shape. The horses were extremely responsive, well behaved, and this really helped because our ride was up through the hills in the area with trails winding through the beautiful trees. Especially outstanding was our guide, Joe. He was truly a seasoned cowboy and one of the nicest people you could meet. On our two hour ride he conversed and gave us all kinds of information about the area, his life, and communicated to us a love for horses. The highlight of our ride was when he pulled out his ukulele from his saddle and began singing cowboy songs. What an experience! We were at the top of a mountain, under the shade of beautiful Pines and Aspen, and he serenaded us in cowboy style. Unforgettable. We appreciate it so much the conscientious love that the owner and management give to their horses and we can't speak more highly of Rapp Corral. read more

These gals were so wonderful. Loved our wranglers on the Cave Tour. We had four adults and three kids (6,7 & 10) and everyone had such a great time. Two of the kids had never been on a horse and they did well. The wranglers were awesome with the kids. The horses were fun, well mannered and well taken care of. The staff was friendly and knew the horses well so nothing was unexpected. The trail was beautiful and the cave was fun to explore. We hope to return again next vacation. My Wife and I were in town for a week and decided to go for a two hour ride. My Wife has riding experience, but I had none - not even a pony ride at a carnival. Noah gave me a quick 'how-to' and helped me up onto Cohise and my Wife was on Banjo. Our Cowgirl/guide Crissy? was right in front of us with a few others up front. The ride was amazing - and even with no riding experience I was able to tackle single-track trails up and down the mountain and even a little gallop on a flat open part. Beyond the tour - safety and the well-being of the horses/patrons seemed top-of-the-list at this place. When you go for a tour like this one, you want to know the horse you are on is loved and the person leading has your back, and this place hits the mark on all fronts. I cannot say enough how perfect this tour was... even though it rained a bit at the end (they had rain coats for us) - it just added to it all. Amazing experience. read more

This was the best trail ride ever. The day we went, smoke from the 416 fire wasn't an issue at all. The ride was beautiful, the staff was fabulous and the horses were well behaved. Three hours flew by, and my only regret was that we couldn't sign up for an all day ride because the normal trails were closed. read more
