This is the cutest little bookstore. Feels nostalgic and right out of an old movie. But what really makes this place special is the adorable owner, Don. He is an absolute joy and ray of sunshine! So friendly and thoughtful and tells the best jokes, lol. I love hearing about his life and how he and his wife came to own this little treasured spot. Last trip he said to me, "I don't care if anyone comes in and doesn't buy a book, it's just so fun to watch people come in here from all walks of life and find joy in these ol' books." It's amazing what one could turn an older house into. This house/store has room after room of shelves of books. So many books to choose from in each room. Did not spend too much time here because of the overwhelming amount of books. Front yard is pretty with a table and a few statues related to books. read more

If you just ate some pie and need a walk the Julian book house is great to browse. Looks great from the outside very picturesque. The books are not too special or interesting at least to my liking. You could have a hard time finding things if you've never been here. There are signs to the rooms but they are rather small. It's a good place to browse. Cute little new/used book store down the road on Main Street. The lady here was very friendly and helpful. The store itself is small and cozy, and didn't have that "old" smell that sometimes goes along with any store that sells used anything. I ended up picking up a few children's books for the kids. The books I got were $1.99 and $2.99 "used" but seemed to be "like new" to me. They were all in good condition. At the counter, I also noticed some old vintage books that are probably collectors items. The lady behind the counter was friendly and helpful. Cute bookstore located across from Julian's Pie Co. That's how we noticed it. It's very cozy since it's located inside a house. This bookstore is charming, unique and fun to browse. The selection is decent, well organized, prices are decent, some books are inexpensive, on some they charge more than they should (like CD-s and newer fiction), but overall is fine. We didn't know when they'll close, it was passed 5 pm in Julian and most stores and restaurants start to close. We chatted with the owner, a nice older man and he said that he closes based on what's going on, at 5 pm, or 6 pm, or 7 pm if they have customers. You're on Julian time, so there are no set schedules. If in Julian, this is a cool place for bookworms to check out. read more

I come here every trip into Julian! The owner is great and has such great stories. Whether you're looking for a used paperback to pass the time or a rare gem. This place has it. I always get a special edition book. He has great prices and the atmosphere is wonderful. Head to the front for the rare gems to see what he has. Excellent service provided at this adorable little bookstore in Julian, CA. There are at least 4 rooms filled with various books. If you are in search of a certain kind of book, then there is a good chance that Old Julian Book House will have it. I expected prices to be high. In my mind, I think that independent book stores are much higher priced than chain stores. To my surprise, their prices were reasonable. So if you find yourself in Julian, I suggest dropping by this book store. Also do yourself a favor, and have a slice of apple pie at Julian Pie Company across the street. Books and pies!! This place is definitely a gem of the town. It is essentially a small home that was changed into a bookstore with completely filled shelves in every corner! Met the owner of the establishment and he was far too kind. He is so open to talk to each and every one that steps foot inside and is definitely a man with a lot of insightful / interesting words. The book selections range in age - there's a bunch of older ones as well as newer ones. Couldn't find anything that caught my attention enough to buy anything, but I still loved it. read more

Whenever I visit a new town, I always try to find their local independent bookstore. I'm a big reader and I have an entire wall of books in my sardine can-sized apartment. With that said, the Old Julian Book House is an amazing little shop; an old house converted into a quaint bookstore. Room after room filled floor to ceiling with used books; from obscure vintage titles, classics, to contemporary works. This bookstore has been around for about 29 years and since 2003, has been run by a lovely married couple. I met Don and he told me about how he and his wife wanted to keep bookstores alive. They're retired teachers from Diamond Bar who decided to move to Julian, and in the past few years, they've been one of the best places to find rare books dating back over 100 years. The Book House is brimming with gems.Three bedrooms, the front room, front porch, and adjoining room (which I would assume was the dining room) are all filled with books. Near the register, bagged and preserved century old collectible books prices at 1/3rd what you would find them for online. A cute little garden with a table and chairs to read in make for a wonderful book shopping experience. A must-try for book lovers. read more

Old bookstores quench my thirst for serendipity. I like to find local, historic treasures to add to my mental museum - like the book I saw sitting on the table when you first walk in.. "Marshal South and the Ghost Mountain Chronicles" the story of a local man who 'lived primitive'. I'm a fan because this is a brick and mortar bookstore and I hope to still see these around when I'm 60! But its not a 5-star bookstore; I need to see something with a Taschen cover to meet that requirement. OK, maybe not that specific. But the first time I went in there it was really cold from the AC and so dusty that my friend walked out. Second time I went neither of these issues surfaced so maybe that's just every so often. Still, a pleasant place to wander a few minutes or drop a few bucks on a rare find. Thanks Book House.. that was fun. read more

LOVELY EXPERIENCE!!! We absolutely love this bookstore and make sure to visit (and buy books!) whenever we are in Julian. The store is so charming and full of beautiful, unique new and used books. It's magical to be able to walk through the rooms and browse topics of interest, almost like a blast from the past. We stopped by to browse for a minute and hide from July heat. It is obvious the store used to be a house, and it is pretty cool how books are located in different rooms (and divided by genre, of course). My friend was able to find a couple of books he had been looking for and I discovered a box of old postcards for .25¢ each - score! Most of them were from the 50's and 60's and some were way too cool. The owner was really kind and offered me to pay with the change he had in the jar, so my postcards ended up being free. This small thing kind of made my day : ) I also noticed they take credit cards and don't want you to bring drinks in! read more

This was my first visit to the book house and it was a great stop during the day trip to Julian. The shop is an actual house converted to a store with bedrooms as different "show rooms" based on genre. One section features books from various cultures, which is a nice touch. The name is very appropriate. It's literally an old house in Julian full of books. If you're a book nerd, you can snag some gems here at very reasonable prices. Each room in the house if practically packed floor-to-ceiling with books. Still, it's organized fairly well by genre. There's even a nice little patio/garden area out front you can sit outside at and sip coffee and read. However, if you get a little claustrophobic, you might want to stop by when they first open or avoid the place on busy days, because it gets tight in there! read more

Is it a cute bookstore? Yes. However, the instant I entered, the old man running the store was quite rude, and complained about how books are too 'politically correct' nowadays. So I awkwardly shuffled around, then pulled out my phone after a moment- to which he started grumbling how he hates phones since someone tried to rob him by making a list on a phone once. Books for days! One of my favorite places to stop when I visit Julian. It's so cute and classic. An old book store set in a vintage Victorian style home. Each room is filled top to bottom with books from different genres. Definitely gives you the classic smell of pages and creaky old floors. Only thing is you might get a little lost in the books and need to find the store clerk for help. However when we walked in he was right to greet us and let us know what each room has, 187 genres and any help needed. Very friendly and warm hearted. read more

Visited today for my first time and wasn't disappointed! The kind gentleman at the counter gave me a run down of the layout of the books, rooms to find the books and where prices are listed. I mostly just wandered around, reminiscing as I found old favorites. Cool that it's in a old house with crocheted curtains. The creaky floors and the smell of the old books add to the charm of this book house! I especially loved the collections of rare old novels with cool vintage cover art. I settled on a Buck Rogers novel for my summer reading. I'm happy with the quality and selection here. I can't wait to come again! read more

Some people come to Julian for the pie...well, okay, I come for the pie too, but I ALSO come for the Book House. This is one of my favorite used book stores ever (and I know from book stores!). The layout is an old house with room after room of book shelves. It's a reader's dream come true. They have a extensive collection of travel books, but also a great place to find pop culture, history, and sociology texts. I remember the prices being a little more reasonable during past trips, but it's still considered a great deal, no matter the price, if you find the right book. As an example, my latest buy was a Fodor's Hawaii guide book from 1961 in great condition for $1.98. read more

This is a creaky bookstore built in an old house with no room for strollers and probably not really handicapped accessible either, come to think of it. I like places like this, even if I don't find anything I want to get, just on the principle of liking old houses that are covered wall to wall in books. It is well-organized. The children's section is very very tiny, occupying the spot in front of the cash register, which my kids were somewhat disappointed with. The Old Book Store is a quaint bookstore located across the street from Julian's Pie Company. It's very organized with five rooms of books (including their porch) of books, so it's very easy to find what you're looking for. Nice cozy bookstore with a good selection of books, very well organized and the owners are very nice and helpful. This isn't a cluttered bookstore at all. There are lots of people that stop in and they hang out and browse while they wait for their reservations and the nearby restaurants. However, most used bookstores have prices that reflect being used while this place has prices that are comparable to a regular bookstore. Most used bookstores I've been to they generally sell their books for half the published price or they sell mass markets for $1 or something like that. I felt bad cause me and my wife left because the prices were just too high. read more

This Bookstore is awesome.. one thing, I'm cheap and the books there are not sooo for me its a window shopping wonderland but I can't really bring myself to buy anything. But I really think its a nice little gem of a bookstore. Before we visited I read a review that they had a fire and lost a ton of books in a storage space so we made it a priority to donate some books during our visit to Julian. Anyway, go to the shop browse, read, buy.. :) it'll make up for my cheapness :) read more

A really nice used book store. The owner/staff are helpful and very friendly. An important piece of a good bookstore is that it is well organized - this one is, I like that. While you are not going to find a collection of rare first-editions you will find plenty of good reading material at a modest price - some of the prices are a little high considering how available a lot of the books are at other places. read more
