This general store reminds me of the Duchess house in Orange. I love the quaint cozy indoor feeling. This store still has the original flooring and ceiling and wood burning oven in the corner. I like how they sell a variety of items from cards to decor to jewelry and cookbooks. Lots to browse and shop here. Friendly old ladies as staff and quite nice to chat with. Good service and good value as well. They even have an outdoor patio area as well. read more

This is a really cute and fun store to stop at when in the area. It is located right on the roadside, so it's pretty hard to miss. We ended up in this area when we were detoured due to a major highway being closed. Overall, we would stop again, if in the area. I'd give 5 stars if there was better parking. The parking was right on the street in front of the store, which was crowded. read more

I recently visited the General Store, it is just what a Country Hardware Store would be like. The ladies at the front counter were very friendly and helpful. The store carries everything from general home repair items, to camping equipment & supplies to homemade soap products. 'Downtown Julian' really consists of a single crossroad. There's the Julian Pie place, the bakery and this place. There's certainly not much, but it's a very significant not much. This place just screams historical significance. I had to stop and check it out to simply feel the history of the place. We parked along the side of the building, as there's no real parking lot to speak of. This place is split into two rooms. One section for antique-y kinda stuff for sale, and the other for the general store, where theres a small museum area, as well as assorted knick-knacks, and old timey candies. They've also got a binder with photos of the place through the ages. Those pictures go back many many many years. It's very cool. Since I didn't really need any coffee, candles, teas, or hand lotions, I went to the old timey candy section, and picked up two bags of the old timey candies. Still being made the same way after ninety six years. Sassafras? Horehound? Definitely old timey. I also picked up a tiny gourmet handmade chocolate bar. Apparently they also have cold beverages somewhere. I was so drawn up in the historical old timey-ness of the store and didn't see them. I also was informed that they were closing in five minutes, and went right up to the register with whatever was in my hands at the time. I found Schoolteacher over in the antique-y section looking at some tea cups. Thankfully, while the store was built in the late 1800's, they've been modernized to accept credit cards. I swiped my plastic, paid for my candy, and left for home. This place is very cool. You can feel the history in the place right when you enter. I'll definitely stop back in on my next trip out to Juliian. read more

I echo the sentiments of Erik H's review. This store is so cute!! It is run by SOHO and all your purchases go back to restoring historical places like this one. At first I thought it was a museum, but it has been restored as a general store and antique shop. There are so many cute and unique gifts in the general store. We picked up some hiking sticks, candles, a vintage compass, some chocolate tea, and candy. All the packaging of the items in this store have that antique feel and can be reused (i.e. my candy tin is darn cute!). The two women who helped us today were nice and friendly. I would definitely stop by again if I was the area. read more

Santa Ysabel is a very sweet and very tiny town on the way out to Julian or Borrego Springs. Not much in the way of food, although the pie place looked pretty darn good. But there are two lovely little antique stores. This one has fabulous crockery and tea sets, rusty old tools whose original purpose everyone has forgotten, and then some produce, jars of jam and chili sauce. It looks like it's been in the same place for about 50 years. read more

This beautiful, historic building was recently purchased and renovated by Save Our Heritage Organisation and transformed back about 100 years. When you enter the store, you have an authentic experience that shoppers a century ago enjoyed. The other reviewer must have been in a different building because this store doesn't sell rusty tools or tea sets; it has a large variety of hard-to-find artisanal foods, food-making kits, local yarn, old-fashioned games, books, canning jars and equipment and a host of other interesting items. Look for the old scale in the back room that has been there for ages, the beautiful old floors, the historic counters and staff that can tell you the history of San Diego County from the ocean to the desert and who can direct you to the SOHO- renovated Warner's Ranch just down the road. The back room has recently been filled with a number of superb antiques at good prices. When you're finished browsing here, go across the street for a delicious slice of the Julian Pie Company's heavenly pies and then check out Dudley's Bakery next door for their amazing array of fresh-baked bread. So much to see and taste in Santa Ysabel, one of the joys of San Diego County! read more
