BEWARE THIS PLACE! Not only is it an overpriced tourist trap but the owner is truly someone special. Walked into the shop happy with my wife and friend. The owner charges up the counter and impolitely demands her ID. We found this amusing and flattering as she is 45. I made a comment about how I wish we were ID more often as I am also middle aged. Guy went ballistic! Dropped F bombs and insulted my wife without cause. Said he was super smart and knew 16 languages! Amazing! And yet his job as a clerk gave him power to verbally abuse us. Then rudely asked if I was going to buy something to which my reply was, "not now." His response, "get the F out". When I dared confront his behaviour I was met with a threat of calling the cops. Old Morris is a beautiful shop with a great location and so much potential. I stopped by on a Saturday afternoon and the shop was practically empty. The only customer was a guy looking at lighters getting what looked like a high pressure sale from an Asian lady behind the counter. I was helped by a man named Ken who was very pleasant and told me about the long and impressive history of Old Morris Tobacconist and the decor of the shop. It was difficult deciding between giving them three or four stars but rounded up. I ended up purchasing only a Diplomatico Norteno because the selection was so limited and the relative humidity of the cabinet humidor felt lower than 65%. The owner of this shop seems like they could be so much busier if they put a non-tacky sign out front advertising that they sold Cuban cigars to attract curious American tourists walking by. The humidor should be stocked better especially with the smaller and more popular cigars from the big name marcas like Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta and Partagas to satisfy the masses. However please carry some of the more interesting Habanos such as Edicion Limitadas and Regional Edicions too. read more

Was there on a short stop from an Alaskan cruise. I will have to say this is the best shop in town. This was my second visit to the store. Got there but the store was closed. Saw the owner inside and he opened and let me purchase my cigars. After talking with him, he offered my wife and I a ride back to our ship. We talked the entire way back about cigars and other things. I would say I am very impressed and when I go back to Vancouver this will be a definite stop. read more

E.A. Morris Tobacconist was established in 1892 on its present site in Victoria, and is one of the last remaining examples of high society in the City. As one of Canada's oldest tobacconists, it serves as a rare example of the early days of twentieth century retail in North America. As I passed through the Alabaster archway into the store, I admired the fine examples of leaded glass that dome the entranceway. The interior is also pretty cool looking and is comprised of mahogany, marble and onyx. The Electrolier that stands in the center of the store was crafted from a rare Mexican Onyx and is the last functioning model of its kind in the world. It's a fun "High Victorian" specialty shop experience, and is certainly appropriate for "high class" patrons such as myself. :) I don't smoke, but to paraphrase the movie ""Apocalypse Now", I Love the Smell of Cigar Smoke in the Morning. It's also pretty handy to have a supply of empty cigar boxes for handy storage of various keepsakes. The empty Cigar Box supply was a little low during the 2 recent visits I made to Old Morris. I was informed that the Store sells off their boxes every December and donates the proceeds to charity. My other option was to buy the last Cuban (or 2) in a given box of my choosing. I almost pulled the trigger on that one, but couldn't dream up a "Stogie Smoking Scenario" and started worrying about getting such a purchase through US Customs. I shouldn't have worried about the later as the US Officials assigned to Victoria Clipper (on both the BC and Seattle sides) didn't ask a lot of questions. I have also heard that a few brands such as Horvath Bances duck the restrictions by importing the tobacco into Canada and then rolling the cigars here. In any event, the store was busy with other Americans who had no second thoughts regarding any import/export intentions. I tried from them a Phillies Blunt cigar. The cigar was great, but they charged me $7.50 for a single, and I realized later that a pack of 5 is only $13 down the street. They totally ripped me off. What makes it worse is I asked if it's cheaper for multiples and they told me that the only way they could do that is if I got 25 singles (at $7.50 each) they would give me 10% off. I don't know much about cigars, but Hubby is a cigar lover who has yet to try a Cuban. We were in Victoria, BC, so we stopped by the first tobacco shop we saw. This place was floor to ceiling cigars. They had cigars from 1912! Like I said, I know nothing about cigars, but I was impressed by this store. We walked in, told the guy that we were Americans looking for some Cubans. I generally expect people to be slightly rude to me or try to take advantage when they find I am an out-of-towner. Not so with this gentleman. He was extremely nice, he answered all of our questions and not once did he pressure us to buy the more expensive cigars. He asked Hubby what he normally smokes, what flavors he enjoys, and made several recommendations. Hubby bought two cigars which he thoroughly enjoyed. I don't know if what we payed was expensive or not, but overall I was pleased with my first experience in a tobacco shop. read more

We NEED to keep places like this alive! Yes, the prices are high, but they are on the priciest street to rent space on in Victoria, and their shop is huge. PLUS...if you're not absolutely stuck on Cubans (no need to be!) you can walk out of the store with an excellent Nicaraguan stick made for Morris that will set you back only $6. The store also doubles as a gentleman's shop, with more than just smokeables. You'll find shaving supplies, tie clips and haberdashery knick-knacks that make you feel like you stepped back 100 years and might just encounter Sherlock Holmes as you exit the premises. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I loved my fine little Nicaraguan cigar. read more

Amazing place. I didn't know much about cigars, nice pipes, or shaving kits and the guy who helped me was super nice. I'm glad we got him since he seemed kinda like me but just a few years ahead of the game. I ended up dropping about a grand at this place; I felt like I was at a candy shop. I even got a new razor that uses razor blades to replace my hated Mach3. Can't wait! Best of all, anything you buy there they can ship to your house, and I mean anything. They are working on a website but you can also order over the phone if you want. I would go back here in a second. Good for beginners and veterans of tobacco and other manly stuff. read more

If I could give this shop a lower rating I would. This is more of an over priced gift shop than a tobacconist. The staff was alright but they had maybe 5 pipes, more trinkets than tobacco and when I looked through the Cuban cigars, there were several that had mold growing on them. read more

Love the looks of the store. Beautiful and typical 1900's ambiance and is thereby one of Victoria's oldest businesses still kicking. Better said, surviving with all the strict tobacco by-laws of which a couple, I believe, Morris Tobacconist is exempt from. On top of this great advantage business wise, the store has a prime location, being in the heart of down-town Victoria. Staff looks sharp, in suit and groomed which fits the theme of the store very well. When things are well combined, look right and are properly organized, I'm getting excited. So, the classy presentation in this case rules! But, when it comes down to a sale, staff seems 'nervous' and acts very friendly. To friendly if you catch my drift, strongly makes me lean towards a commission sales technique. For some it works but I'm simply not a fan for a reason, it usually shows and that isn't any different here. Disappointment struck fast. During my stay at the store I was continuously shadowed after answering the same question twice, "Thank you, I'm just browsing". That's something that annoys me, to say the least. The cigars are presented nicely with a fair choice in premium brands. I wish they offered a more extensive selection of Cuban and non-Cuban cigars though. That way it would keep locals interested and stun tourists more in my opinion. The amount of accessories on the other hand, abundance in Heaven! Can you ever make a decision out there?! Impressive, such a rich selection of cutters, lighters, ashtrays, cigar cases, humidors etc. For those interested in pipe smoking, there is a section for pipes and consequently, pipe tobacco. Overall, I see the store as a tourist attraction. It looks great and classy, yet I wish staff wasn't as sales minded, it works repulsive. Sales need to be made but enjoy it, without the pushy/nervous/must sell feel to it. It would equal the already accomplished presentation so much better. Good cigar and tobacco selection but lacking the knowledgable tobacconist feel I was looking for.

I live in Victoria and go in here occasionally when my regular shop (which has a way better selection, better kept humidors, and friendlier staff) on Fort is closed. Unfortunately I often leave empty handed because the prices are at least $5 higher than they should be, per stick, and I just don't like being ripped off. Tonight, for example, I thought I'd just suck it up and go pay the premium since the other places were closed.. but I was horrified to see that a Montecristo Edmundo goes for $34+tax (it's about $27 at my regular place here in town). Comparable cigars like the Partagas P2 are equally overpriced. Even Jose L. Piedras cost $7 / stick (for the one that goes for $4.50 elsewhere), and Macanudo Hyde Parks cost $26 (they should be under $20). This place is situated on the tourist stroll so I figure most of their business is out of towners looking to try a Cuban. The good things about this place are: the old store front looks cool. They are open at times that everybody else in town is closed (evenings, holidays). They do keep their humidors in reasonably good order so the cigars are in good condition. But the prices are just obscene compared to other places, even my favorite place which has extremely good storage conditions and a much bigger selection. read more

I visited Old Morris over Christmas, while in Victoria. I was somewhat excited as it was basically all that cropped up when I searched for Victoria tobacconists before my trip. Visually, it is a beautiful store. As others have said, the architecture, appointments, shelves, cupboards, floors--the whole thing is lovely, and old-worldly. What is not old-worldly are their disappointingly astronomically highly-priced pipe tobacco, which I was specifically looking for. I had not explored the website a great deal since I was excited just to get to the place, so imagine my shock when the gentleman behind the counter broke the news to me that the ~$45 I had to spend to buy tobacco would only get me a meagre 50g (Less than 2oz). Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to try any of it since I needed to eat the next day, so I can say little of the quality of the tobacco--maybe it is the best tobacco on the planet (I doubt), but even if it were it's a hard sell convincing me that it's worth $45 for 50g. For reference, some of the most reputable names in the pipe tobacco world would charge, on average, about $9.99 (USD) for 50g of their tobacco, and similar places to Old Morris who do their own house blends which I am sure stand up to the Old Morris quality would charge about $6.25 (USD) for 50g. I left realizing that it is a store which thinks a bit too highly of itself. Maybe the wealthy Victorian locals can, and do, afford such prices but if you are looking for reasonably priced pipe tobacco--check elsewhere. read more

I can buy a box of 25 of that same cigar for around $225-50 plus shipping on a certain online site in Montreal. Only one gentleman acknowledged me and bothered to assist me in the humidor. I would like to say that this is a wonderful store... I mean we have shopped here for years. Unfortunately I have to say that I will never shop there again. 10 months ago I bought a really nice and expensive cane for my 90-year-old grandmother. It had a beautiful sterling silver top on it. The wood recently split right up the middle, so I returned to the store and asked what their return policy was for canes. Long story short (and apart from being talked down to and treated rudely) there is no return-type policy for anything. It was stated that if you bought something that was broken before you bought, then yes, they will replace it... But if you buy something and then it breaks (no matter if there is a flaw in the object or not) then there is no return policy. My recommendation is, before you buy anything ask about the return policy and get it in writing. Next time we will shop somewhere else. read more
