So first and foremost, let it be known that I love Winners and all Winners-style stores (e.g…read more Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Ross Dress for Less, Saks Off 5th, Nordstorm Rack, etc.). I love rummaging through junk to find gems. I love that they have new stuff every week, unlike most stores that only have new inventory every season. I also love getting brand name items at discount prices. That all being said, this Winners location is one of the better ones in Ottawa. It's not big, but it has a good mix of stuff. They don't have a lot of higher end stuff here though. I don't think they even have a "Contemporary Designers" section, or if they do, it is very small. No luxury brands like Gucci, Valentino, Veneta Bottega, etc. In Ottawa, I don't think Winners carries luxury brands. I've only seen them at the Marshalls in Trainyards (same parent company). Anyway to give you an idea of the deals, I got a pair of Tsubo pumps here once for $26, and a pair of lambskin Cole Haan espadrilles for $36 - both on clearance of course. Although full disclosure: my feet are not a popular size (5). It's in a strip mall in Bells Corners - same mall as Shopper's Drug Mart, Metro and Mark's. Lots of free parking.

There's nothing remarkable about this store. Certainly, there's a wide variety of merchandise…read morehere, but I've never had an "OMG!" moment here; nothing to put this at the top of the heap compared to other stores. A pretty much average shopping experience (says the guy who's not a huge fan of shopping).

I pass it quiet frequently and always wanted to stop in, but it was never on the top of my priority list, especially with so many other thrift stores on that street. I had some Christmas items that I wanted to donate, and thought, this is my chance to check out Bibles for Missions. I could tell just from stepping up to the donation door that they bombarded with donations. The donation door was wide open and there were a couple of workers in the back, no greeting, acknowledgment, or thank you, so I plopped my donation down and decided to check out the store. The first thing that I noticed were the signs placed in the entrance "please leave big purses and bags at cash, we reserve the right to search your bag," and so on. Maybe there has been a lot of theft? Not sure, but it did not give me a friendly first impression. No greeting, or acknowledgment throughout the 15 minutes browsing the store, but there were plenty of staff on the sales floor for customer assistance/questions. I did not find that there was a great selection, it was like walking through grandmas basement. Nothing caught my eye here, and I was not "wowed" by anything in particular. What stands out about this thrift store than others, is that it is mostly volunteers, and the majority of the profit goes towards their partnership with the bible league of Canada. More information found on their website: http://www.bfmottawa.com/about-us Would I go back? Only to donate, not to shop.

Definitely the best thrift store in the city! Lots of quality merchandise at great prices…read more The store is well laid out and the staff are super helpful.

The Long Version: I had been to the Scottish and Irish Store out in Bells Corners but didn't know this one existed until I saw it while dropping off my husband at Funhaven to spend a few hours with a friend of his and the friend's kids. We got there early and the friend hadn't arrived yet, so that gave us the opportunity to poke around the store. There are 2 floors, with food being on the first floor and clothes, decor and other non-food items on the second floor. I was only interested in the food, lol, so didn't go up to the second floor. They had lots of snacks, my favourite type of food. Haha. They had chips/crisps, cookies/biscuits, candies, chocolates, etc. They also had lots of sodas and other drinks like juices. They had a clearance section where they marked down items that were nearing or past their best before dates. This is where I shopped since I found the regular prices a bit on the high side. I picked up some chips for my husband (Lamb and Rosemary flavoured ones and Cheese and Onion flavoured ones) and a bag of Monster Munch for us to share (Pickled Onions flavour). No bakery section with fresh baked goods, but they have frozen baked goods. Staff were pleasant. I chatted with the cashier and discovered they actually closed down their Bells Corners location. Good to know, lol. I feel this location on Baxter is more hidden, but hopefully they have established enough of a customer base that they'll be ok. Parking on the weekends (and I assume also when kids are not in school, like the summers, March Break, and PD Days) is epic since it's in the same complex as Funhaven. And kids were running around freely, at least that's what I saw when I was there. Otherwise, there's free parking in the complex. Review #63 (2025)

Uniqlo has finally opened in Bayshore! Uniqlo is a Japanese casual wear retailer, known for its…read morehigh quality clothing. The majority of clothing sold at this store is pretty much just wardrobe essentials; plain longsleeve tees, active zip ups, plain shirts, jackets, etc. This store is focused on the concept of "timeless basics" rather than chasing the current fashion trends. For some reason, I always thought this store was a lot cheaper than other stores but it turns out that unfortunately no, it is not. I bought a zip up for $50 and a plain longsleeve tee for $25. Not that it's expensive, just not a store that I would label as "cheap," but more "affordable." I love that this store is wide and spacious, and it didn't feel crowded even though the store was pretty busy. The coolest thing about this store, though? They have self-checkouts instead of a cashier, and not the normal self-checkouts you're used to, either. It's the kind where you place all your items into this bin, and then everything's instantly & automatically scanned. Then you pay and it prints out your receipt. Mind you, there was around 5 of these self-checkouts so there wasn't a line you had to wait in to pay for your items. Something to note: Uniqlo also has a Uniqlo app, where you have access to app-exclusive discounts and special items that aren't available in-store. I'd recommend downloading this app prior coming to the store, because the reception was weak when I tried to download it on-the spot. All in all, a great new clothing store to check out!

Visiting Ottawa is not complete without a stop at a Giant Tiger. I learned on my previous trip to…read morethe city that the first Giant Tiger store is in ByWard Market. I walked by it and learned something new. I still need to actually go in it. This Giant Tiger is the closest one to Zellers, where I was on a late Saturday afternoon. I dropped by after having dinner in the vicinity. This Giant Tiger is in a plaza that was fairly busy on a Saturday evening. I parked and walked into the store. Naturally, I looked at the food section. My favourite bagged cereal by Malt-O-Meal typically goes for $3 a bag. This store had a sale happening. I got two bags for $5. Yes! I enjoyed browsing the desserts and peanut butter varieties. In the book section, I found Dark Angel by V.C. Andrews. I was into her books when I was in grade 7. It was cool to relive a bit of my past when I saw this book going for $5. This store is exactly what I had expected from Giant Tiger. There are plenty of items at good prices and it's Canadian. Enough said. (298)

Oh nostalgia goes a long way, sigh. Make no mistake, it is a bargain store. They do sell clothes there, but I feel that they look and feel like bargain store clothes. They have cheap home furnishings, like curtain rods, curtains and rugs, which are great to furnish a student apartment. Their food and household items are also well-priced and even better when they are on sale. I only ever buy food at Giant Tiger, but I love poking around for old times' sake. This location is smaller than most and their food section is really tiny, but it's the most convenient location for me. There's free parking in the strip mall.
