Stopped in here on a whim for dinner and pretty quickly regretted it. The good came out QUICK which should have been a sign of the quality. Probably the worst food I've had in manhattan to date. We got the shaved steak sandwich which was awful. The steak was somehow raw (we asked for medium well) and rubbery and overly chewy all at the same time. Also tasted like it was seasoned with a pinch of salt and nothing else. The caesar salad was abysmal. They make their own dressing which is usually a good thing but that was not the case here. The dressing tasted like anything but caesar. We told the waitress and asked for new entrees because we couldn't even take another bit of either. We chose chicken tenders and a burger because we figured you can't mess that up. Well.... The burger was also pretty terrible and the chicken tenders tasted of old oil. Now one would think if food isn't their strong suit, maybe they make up for it in their drinks. WRONG. Moscow Mule was not in a copper cup. Instead it was out of a plastic cup made to look like copper. It also tasted like flavored water. The only reason I'm giving 2 stars is because the waitresses gave us new food (also bad) and we're apologetic but it's not their fault. I can only comment on the drinks as we didn't have food, but this is a great old bar with a really nice atmosphere. You can feel how old the place is (in a good way) and it was nice and cozy to get in out of the heat and relax with a tasty drink. Service was good and I'd definitely come back here again! read more

Returned to Old Town Bar for the first time in maybe a decade unknowingly on wing night, so this place was packed out. We headed to the back of the bar to grab some drinks, and got lucky that there were two folks about to get up who were willing to give up their bar stools. The bartenders here are animals, crazy to see how many drinks they're making in any given moment with the entire place packed out. My Titos and soda was strong, my friend enjoyed her wine even though this didn't seem like the kind of place you'd order a wine at. Ambiance wise it's a very cool historic spot - you can watch the food get pulleyed up from the kitchen to the bar. The booths all seem to be original. If it wasn't so packed I would've asked more about the history but I figured I'd let the bartenders do there thing. Cool spot to take someone visiting NYC. read more

I've always liked this place so it's a shame that so many things have changed and gone downhill so fast. After much discussion and indecision a group of us decided to come here for brunch/lunch on Saturday. There were 3 of us in the party and our third person was still walking over. We asked for a table and they seated us in the first booth near the door. We decided to order drinks while we waited. Which I guess there was some confusion if we were allowed to just order up from the bar because it's right next to the table but we still ordered from the waitress. We got our drinks and were discussing what to order and what not. It was about only 5 minutes of us sitting there and for some reason our waitress changes to another one and she seems very irritated with us. She loudly exclaims that if our friend isn't here in another minute that we would have to LEAVE. Completely caught off guard by how rude she was we decided that we would leave even though our friend was now across the street because I've honestly never been treated so rudely at a restaurant or bar in my life. We went up to pay the bartender because honestly I didn't want her to get a single dollar of tip. If she needed the table immediately (there was no one waiting for a table) she should have said 'we have nowhere for you to sit and eat and enjoy your time here so get the fuck out'. That would have been at least more honest. Went down the block to Pete's Tavern where they were absolutely lovely with us. *Beers on tap btw have gone up to $10 now in case anyone is wondering. And a tuna sandwich is the same price as a cheeseburger. Make it make sense. read more

After having lunch and walking back to Subway station, I came upon a cool looking neon sign that caught my eye down the street. Don't let the dark windows and the blue taped signage on the front doors and windows to deter entering - they are open. For me, I was just there for a taste before heading back on the subway. The bartender - kind of like a Seth Rogen doppelganger - was very friendly and welcomed me. After having a nip - which was PACKED with energy, I also ordered a dessert - a key lime pie - which was good. Would like to try their food at some point. read more

I've been passing this place now for years, finally stopped in for a late lunch. We, my son and I decided on this because it had Pierogies, Hotdogs and Liverwurst sandwich on the menu. Walked in and WOW what a throwback to 1892 - 12 foot high tin cielings, wood panelling, looks like original light fixtures with original one inch of dust. There were few people sitting at the massive bar. We seated ourselves in one of the booths. The place felt very comfortable. In few minutes our waitress arrived with the menus. I ordered the Liverwurst sandwich and he ordered the Pierogies. In a minute or two waitress came back - no Pierogies (: he orders Mac & cheese balls - out of those also (: (: He finally settled on BLT. Both sandwiches came with either potato salad, coleslaw, FF, or onion rings (up charge). Its exactly what the name is. You got iiiite food, with straight up service, cheap liquor, and you gtfo. I thought it was pleasant. Not a lot of people when we went in. The bartender chick was cool. The menu has historical notes on there including glorifying that it has the oldest urinals in use to this day in the state and possibly country. I thought it was hella funny that they had a picture of the urinal ON THE MENU HAHAHAH - that deserves one star alone. Which is why I rated it 4 and not 3. The upstairs is a very nice space for a small event. We had around 70 colleagues there for a happy hour and it was definitely crowded and VERY loud, but it was fun. There was food on the standing tables and the main serving table: Guac and chips, pretzels, and later they brought out buffalo wings. Everything was pretty good bar food! They had great seasonal decor with a fall theme, which was a nice touch. Highly commend the service that night because despite the heavy crowds, the servers were all sooo friendly. There was no open bar for upstairs; rather the servers come to you one by one and if you don't have a drink (or are nearly done), they ask if you want to order something else. read more

Pretty straightforward old school-ish bar with a 2nd floor that I didn't even realize existed until Yelp told me. I came for a couple quick drinks in the afternoon. Options were pretty standard from what I saw. The bar area is somewhat long, but there's not a ton of width between the booths and barstools, so I figure it gets packed during actual Happy Hour. Prices are somewhat standard too. I think each of my beers were $10 each, but that's because I didn't really arrive before Happy Hour. Being right around the corner from Union Square is pretty nice too. Not the greatest bar, not the cleanest bar, and not the most aesthetically pleasing bar. Finally made it to this iconic bar. We stopped by for lunch. It was quiet. The space is like something out of a movie. It's so dark that you can't see the menu without a flashlight. I had been in the mood for a Guinness and was finally able to score one here. My brother indulged his Ballantine beer fetish. We have been looking for a solid place to eat chicken wings. The tables require three people to be seated. After we sat down, one member of our party had an unexpected emergency and needed to step outside briefly. During that time, the hostess repeatedly stopped by our table every few minutes to ask when the third person would return. The interactions felt rude and pushy, and there was an implication that we were being dishonest, despite the fact that we ordered food and drinks for the third person, who was just outside. The Guinness pour was disappointing. It was served in a 16 oz glass instead of a 20 oz pint, and the head was under-poured. The food itself was solid, but it did not make up for the uncomfortable atmosphere created by the hostess. Black & White tile floors, well worn bar and stools, straight back green velvet booth bench seating, ornate stamped tin ceilings, original gas lamps converted to electric and, a fun variety of clientele and regulars. Truly the best grilled cheese, tomato and bacon sandwich, with fries ever experienced. Simple pleasurable tavern food. Beverages kept standard and made to order. Guys, if you need a potty please take note of the huge one of a kind urinals. On my visit, ice cubes appeared to be standard to assist with the fragile water supply. Shall I return? This is the quintessential NYC style pub bar and a nod to the past. They even have a manual cash register. You can pick up a pub style lunch whether it be a cheeseburger or a corned beef sandwich. Then there are the old style drinks - maybe on the rocks or maybe neat. The atmosphere is fun and the decor likely has not changed much since the 1930s and the patrons appreciate this. read more

Came in after a concert on a Thursday night searching for food late and this spot was it. Literally thank god it existed where it did because it was functional for my friend and I to get home from there and they still served food til 1130. Staff were nice and quick! Friend got a happy waitress and I got a chicken club. We could have probably eaten anywhere and been fine but we lucked out and had yummy diner/pub style food and a drink. They ain't lyin about their potato salad, it slaps. Will def keep this in mind when I need a quick casual spot for food again. I was born and raised in Manhattan and The Old Town Bar just made it to the top of my list of old school NYC bars. High tin ceilings, long wooden bar, friendly staff that has worked there for over 30 years, and locals that know how valuable tradition is. I had the Reuben sandwich for lunch and it was THE BEST I EVER HAD! The corned beef was incredibly tender and fresh. I almost ordered their legendary cheeseburger and will need to come back to check that out. Even the men's room has sturdy vintage urinals ( like McSorleys for those who know). In a city that is constantly under construction, its great to experience a real NYC bar. No posers here. read more

This is an amazing place that has stood the test of time. It is a tradition to visit Old Town during the holidays. Nothing fancy just great drinks and food. Low noise so you can have heartfelt conversations with folks. "The only big shots in this place are in the drinks".
