    Ham & Cheese omelette
    Brian K.

Long wait for food but that's the only complaint. Coffee refills on time during the wait. American fries really done right. Ham & cheese omelette was filled with ham. The ham & egg sandwich was also done perfectly with good portions of all ingredients. Waitress was apologetic about the wait & recognized we had been seated before another table got their breakfast. It's located in an old fast food building, standard diner of today.

Yep, so good I cleaned my plate! We order breakfast at work on Sundays and the folks at Old Town really take care of us. Deliver right to our plant gate. Always arrives hot. Sweet lady always puts a smiley on my order! Next time I will try to get a picture before I dig in! Thanks Old Town!

The famous chicken strips, with mashed potatoes and gravy and a buttermilk biscuit.

So many good ratings - I hate to be the one to spoil it. This place is the American Idol contestant of restaurants. Somebody has convinced them that their food is good, and nobody who they would actually listen to has the guts to tell them that their food is actually really bad. So they keep serving it, but in reality they shouldn't be in the restaurant business. I decided to stop in for dinner during a short business trip to Clinton, thanks to the four star rating on Yelp and its proximity to my hotel. I was seated immediately, since there were only three other customers in the place. Perhaps that should've been a warning to me. My waitress recommended the house chicken (chicken strips) that they "sell a ton of". For sides I asked if they had any vegetables and was told "corn". I asked if it was canned or fresh. It's canned. (Gross. No self-respecting restaurant should ever serve canned corn. And here in the heart of Iowa farm country?! That should be illegal.) So I got a buttermilk biscuit and mashed potatoes and gravy for sides with a cup of chicken noodle soup. You can't go wrong with those, right? Service was fast and friendly. Food was delivered five minutes after ordering. Waitress came every two minutes to check on how I liked the chicken. The environment feels like a clean 1980's diner, but there was a faint smell of cigarette smoke despite nobody actively smoking. As for the food: Chicken noodle soup - Probably from a can. Noodles were totally mushy, but the broth had a nice peppery flavor...after I put more pepper in it. Buttermilk biscuit - really really soft. Any softer, and it would be soggy. Is it supposed to flop over when you lift it? Mine did. The flavor is like Pillsbury biscuits, except not fresh out of the oven but rather reheated in the microwave. Just avoid these. Mashed potatoes and gravy - the uniform consistency of the potatoes (and the flavor) were a dead giveaway that these were boxed potato flakes, reconstituted with water. The turkey gravy was also definitely from the can. I had to load it up with salt and pepper to make it edible. Chicken - finally something that was actually homemade. The chicken strips were moderately tender, but nobody should be bragging about the batter they were coated with for frying. Like the rest of the meal it was bland with a weird texture for fried chicken. The strips were served piping hot. I'm pretty sure they came right out of the fryer to my table, because I burned the roof of my mouth when I bit into the first one. Dipping sauces - all sauces were pre-packaged in plastic sauce cups with lids and came from the refrigerator which made them too thick to use effectively as a dipping sauce. Jan sauce is supposed to be sweet and tangy but this one was just sweet and bland. The BBQ sauce was a 100% exact match for the flavor of Famous Dave's BBQ sauce from the grocery store. I hate to drop a one-star rating here, because my waitress was so nice and so earnest in hoping I would like the food. They really were all nice, but the food was so bad I could never ever recommend that you visit this place.

Nice breakfast place. RIght next to smelly factory but you will not smell it inside. Really inexpensive but great food!

Burned bad smelling burger. Half boiled half burned hash browns.

Walked in and clearly this is a local hotspot for regulars. We were there on a Sunday(around 10:30am). Gentleman in front of us had the paper and was acknowledged by one of the waitresses to sit at the 2nd blue booth and she would be right with him. Gotta hometown feel. We were seated by an older gentleman (didn't realized he worked there. Looked like a customer). He mumbled "follow me". No "hi" "good morning" Strange but ok. Waiter was also not very talkative. Some might dislike this service or not. I don't really mind. I'm there for food, not chit chat. Coffee, diet pepsi and water. Coffee was real good. International Delight creamer cups already on the table for convenience. Water more than likely was filtered and not straight city water(at least it tasted good to me). I got biscuits and gravy with 2 eggs (over easy). Impressive serving. 2 biscuits cut in half, smothered in sausage peppered gravy. Biscuits we good. Nothing fancy to say about those. Gravy was creamy and plenty of sausage throughout. Perhaps too peppery for my liking but I was able to finish the plate. (Did I mention we were hangry?). Eggs were ok(we are use to farm fresh). Over easy like I ordered. Boyfriend requested House Skillet with choice of toast for side. Imagine a garden, then toss some hash browns in, meats and slap on 2 eggs! All the things in this skillet. Mushrooms, peppers, onions, tomatoes, ham, bacon, sausage, hash browns, cheese-all topped with 2 over easy eggs! Hefty portion! He was happy with it. Not "bangin" but great taste. For the quick decision of stopping here, we were happy. Service was speedy. Just not service with a smile. Perhaps Sundays are their busiest days. Oh forgot to mention! Cheap! Large portions- ain't leavin hungry for a penny pincher!

Smaller salads which is fine, but the honey mustard dressing was skimpy and not best. No bread served with the salad or even salad crackers. My wife had a hamburger and I had a patty melt. Both appeared to be preformed hamburger patties. You can pretty much tell, same shape, not much taste or flavor. My wife said hers was dried out. We go for the diners that use fresh ground beef, hand made. We ate maybe half of each. The fries and onion rings were good, but difficult to justify at +$30 for both meals. Doubtful that we would try much else here for lunch but the breakfast is very good.

In other words, it may not be a great place for a date. If you are looking for a good meal though, don't let it's appearance turn you off. I had the Cuatlatl skillet. The sausage was decently spicy. The rest of the dish was not spicy. The result of that mix was that the spiciness accented the other flavors of the dish without overpowering them. It was a solid breakfast skillet. My wife had a an omelette (I don't remember if it was the Greek or Garden). She liked it and made the specific comment that the spinach seemed like it was cooked inside the omelette rather than just being laid on top of it. She liked this about it. My kid had plain pancakes. There was nothing special about these, but they were done well. Prices were decent. Our waitress was good. The restaurant was busy, but she stayed on top of things. Overall, this is a hidden gem. The food is pretty good, even if the place doesn't look the part. I would eat here again.

Certainly not for the food. First thing we found quite different was no dinner rolls or even wafer crackers to eat with your salads. I don't ever remember a diner over all the years that didn't serve one or the other....or both. Nope, you just get a salad and dressing, that's it. No shredded cheese for the top of your salad nor was it offered. My wife had the Chicken Parmesan. To her it tasted like store bought tomato sauce from a can. No taste to the rest of it at all. For bread, two pieces of toast. She ate not quite half of the meal. It wasn't as good to her as from other diners over the years, not at all. I had the Broiled Steak Sirloin with cooked onions. No flavor, no taste, I couldn't taste any seasoning. I was quite disappointed. Normally these are made with a good quality fresh hamburger or even mixed with some ground sirloin and with some seasoning. I would say this wasn't made from fresh, not in my opinion. I only ate about half because I was hungry. Sorry to say but the food was sub-par compared to many other diners we've eaten at over the years yet they charge right up there with the prices for it today. We haven't been to a diner in years where if we have half of it left, it goes home for diner the next day. Not this time, we left it all behind. We'll give them one more try and that will be for breakfast. We won't be trying it for again for lunch. Sorry, but this all really missed the mark for us.
