Such a cool place and can't believe never checked it out when in the area. First off, this place is located in Old Town where are the shops and mini museums are. What sold us was the sign that said buy one, get one free root beer float. Because of the sign, we decided to try it out. the guy who worked there could tell we were quite overwhelmed. You get to pick out which root beer you want. There are so many to choose from. Best bet is to ask because there are so many varieties and flavors to choose from. We knew we liked something with a vanilla touch so he recommended the Frosties Root Beer. It was so yummy. Aside from the root beer floats, the merch and candy they sell here are pretty cool. They also have a section for beef jerky but none really stood out to me (since I've spent years crafting my own jerky and making people I know be my guinea pigs until I've made the perfect batch). I had lunch in Old Town and came across Old Town Jerky and Root Beer.  I had to go inside as I love root beer.  Inside was a huge selection of root beer and other drinks in glass bottles.  Reminds me of when I was a kid and most drinks were in glass bottles and you could return them for a dime.  Most of the drinks were $4 each. Surf City Root Beer had a good amount of sweetness and carbonation.  I liked the vanilla and sassafras flavor.  There is a bite a little like Barq's.  Very good tasting root beer. River City Root Beer had lots of bubbles and sweet licorice flavor.  Very good. Oak Creek Blonde Barrel Aged Root Beer was the first root beer I've come across that looks like a cream soda.  Flavors include caramel, vanilla, cinnamon, and clove.  Love the combination of flavors.  This is my favorite root beer here. Boulder Birch Beer was sweet with a mix of vanilla and wintergreen flavor.  One of my favorite birch beers. Wow, this place definitely is a great place for any of your friends or family that are all about the meat. This shop is deceptively big inside. There is a huge selection of different kinds of jerky at several flavors of beef, jerky, bacon, pork, and that chicken in addition to these lovely pieces of dried meat. They have lots of old-fashioned, bottled beverages like root beer. One thing I definitely gotta go back for is there retro candy. I really like the fact that they had candy cigarettes. I'm not sure if they were bubblegum or they were the ones that look like chalk. I will have to go back for those and and be a bad grandma, and buy them for my granddaughter. Located right next to Fiesta de Reyes. And they happened to have a buy 1 get 1 root beer float. You have 2 choices for the root beer: a&w or virgil's. We chose virgil's. We also picked up 2 meat candies: street taco and spicy honey garlic. We enjoyed our root beer float right outside the shop, they provide a couple of chairs and tables. We tried our jerky later on and the street taco is salty and savory while the spicy honey garlic is exactly as expected, sweet, spicy and garlicky. We've never tried the avalon brand so it was kinda weird finding the pieces somewhat cut nicely into squares (mostly) instead of the irregular shaped jerky that we're used to. But it was good, and it was pretty tender. I would get the spicy honey garlic one again! read more

Walking through old town can definitely work up a sweat! With the humidity and the heat getting to me, I decided it was time to grab a ice cold beverage. Outside the shop, was a large chalkboard sign that said Buy one get one free! I thought, why not! Let's save some money and drink some carbonated sugar! She suggested going with Virgils because it had a nice spice to it, that was not too heavy. That it had some nutmeg undertones and vanilla flavors that would go very well with the float. They definitely try to upsell you, with the $7 special edition Virgils bottle over the $3 bottle they had in the fridge! Upon checkout our total ran up to $7 for one bottle of root beer and two cups filled with vanilla ice cream. The cashier informed us that if we had bought the special edition bottle it would have totaled $10. You can get root beer floats and jerkeys here too but I mainly come for the root beer. My top favorites are Abita and Hanks. But I like to try new ones here and there. I like to talk to the girls that work there they are always so knowledgeable and give nice tips on which to try. I always get the mix and match 6 bottles. Jerky - $40 bucks a pound. Now that I got that outta the way, there is a more here than just a high price. To put things into perspective, Costco sells premium jerky for about 9 bucks a pound. Costco Vs House of Jerky (HOJ) I was fortunate to have a bag of Premium Costco jerky at home. I sampled a piece from both bags. I compared texture, flavor, dehydration and marination. It was a clean sweep for HOJ. The marination of the HOJ was far superior to that of Costco. HOJ was also easier to chew and not overly dry. Costco was was tough to chew and tasted a bit fake ( though it was nice to see Pineapple juice as an ingredient). Price? Well you can't beat Costco.. For general use it's the better choice. For something special I believe the difference in taste justified the high price. House of Jerky Vs other Jerky sellers in Old Town (Alvarado Provisions). You'll see jerky being sold at other shops in Old Town. Beware, those are inferior. You may be tempted to purchase it because of the lower price ( 3 bucks for a piece, compared to 9 bucks a piece at Jerky House). The rub ( scam) is that the 3 dollar jerky is thin and light as a feather. By true weights (1oz for $3 compared to 4oz for $9 at HOJ) it's actually cheaper at HOJ...But the quality is terrible on the cheaper priced Jerky.. Imagine eating a fibrous Cow Skin. You really had to struggle to bite off a piece of that thin cheap jerky. HOJ was so moist and flavorful. House of Jerky offer samples of everything that's on the wall. You can judge if it's worth the price or not. I think it is, and will buy from them again. - They also sell exotic jerky like ( Buffalo, Venison, Ostrich) - They also have rootbeer from the rootbeer place that use to own this retail space. Rootbeer beer floats, buy one get one. - House of Jerky is a reseller of a premium brand of jerky. They don't make their own Jerky just so you know. read more

If you were to ask me what kind I would recommend I would say to just try out a couple yourself.
