Sweet and salty is arguably one of the best flavor combinations on the planet, so it's no surprise that a jerky and root beer store would exist. While I was meandering through Old Town San Diego, I stumbled across this little gem and left with a couple bottles of root beer to try. It's a small space, but the shelves are fully stocked counter to ceiling with more options than you could realistically try in a reasonable amount of time. Service was friendly and the prices were ok. There are specials going on regularly, so watch for a deal if that's of interest to you.

Such a cool place and can't believe never checked it out when in the area. First off, this place is located in Old Town where are the shops and mini museums are. What sold us was the sign that said buy one, get one free root beer float. Because of the sign, we decided to try it out. the guy who worked there could tell we were quite overwhelmed. You get to pick out which root beer you want. There are so many to choose from. Best bet is to ask because there are so many varieties and flavors to choose from. We knew we liked something with a vanilla touch so he recommended the Frosties Root Beer. It was so yummy. Aside from the root beer floats, the merch and candy they sell here are pretty cool. I was taken back a decade to some all time fave candy I liked when I was a kid. Overall, next time you are in Old Town, I dare ya to stop here. Don't pass it up, actually take your time and walk in to quench your thirst and to buy some good candy or jerky. You will thank me later.

COOL STORE (5 stars) All these years of coming to Old Town, I never thought to explore the small shops until I saw the words posted "jerky" and "root beer". I love jerky and I love root beer, it was a must to walk inside. WHOA. Walls full of root beer bottles from around the way. So many selections it was bonkers. They also have a section for beef jerky but none really stood out to me (since I've spent years crafting my own jerky and making people I know be my guinea pigs until I've made the perfect batch). My main visit was for root beer! I went to the back where there are some sold cold and went for one of those. I am going to appoint myself to select a new rootbeer everytime I'm the area.

    My favorite root beer here.

I had lunch in Old Town and came across Old Town Jerky and Root Beer.  I had to go inside as I love root beer.  Inside was a huge selection of root beer and other drinks in glass bottles.  Reminds me of when I was a kid and most drinks were in glass bottles and you could return them for a dime.  Most of the drinks were $4 each. Surf City Root Beer had a good amount of sweetness and carbonation.  I liked the vanilla and sassafras flavor.  There is a bite a little like Barq's.  Very good tasting root beer. River City Root Beer had lots of bubbles and sweet licorice flavor.  Very good. Oak Creek Blonde Barrel Aged Root Beer was the first root beer I've come across that looks like a cream soda.  Flavors include caramel, vanilla, cinnamon, and clove.  Love the combination of flavors.  This is my favorite root beer here. Boulder Birch Beer was sweet with a mix of vanilla and wintergreen flavor.  One of my favorite birch beers. If you are a soda lover and prefer your drink in a glass bottle Old Town Jerky and Root Beer is an awesome place to get a drink.

The store space is deceptively big inside!

Wow, this place definitely is a great place for any of your friends or family that are all about the meat. This shop is deceptively big inside. There is a huge selection of different kinds of jerky at several flavors of beef, jerky, bacon, pork, and that chicken in addition to these lovely pieces of dried meat. They have lots of old-fashioned, bottled beverages like root beer. One thing I definitely gotta go back for is there retro candy. I really like the fact that they had candy cigarettes. I'm not sure if they were bubblegum or they were the ones that look like chalk. I will have to go back for those and and be a bad grandma, and buy them for my granddaughter. The lady that seemed to own the store was super knowledgeable about all the products in the store. I didn't catch her name, but she was so nice & made you feel welcome.

Located right next to Fiesta de Reyes. And they happened to have a buy 1 get 1 root beer float. You have 2 choices for the root beer: a&w or virgil's. We chose virgil's. We also picked up 2 meat candies: street taco and spicy honey garlic. We enjoyed our root beer float right outside the shop, they provide a couple of chairs and tables. We tried our jerky later on and the street taco is salty and savory while the spicy honey garlic is exactly as expected, sweet, spicy and garlicky. We've never tried the avalon brand so it was kinda weird finding the pieces somewhat cut nicely into squares (mostly) instead of the irregular shaped jerky that we're used to. But it was good, and it was pretty tender. I would get the spicy honey garlic one again!

This place was so cool. Stop by here and grab a couple of root beer and snacks while you walk around old town san diego. Brought a root beer connoisseur with me and he said it passed the test! They also have seating outside which I thought was cool. I wonder if they hold events out there

I love how it is buy one get one, the sign really grabbed our attention especially on a hot day. We enjoyed the outdoor seating. My husband asked to go again the next day and well we did.

Jack Black's Dead Red Root Beer!
    Highly C.

Love the Old Town setup for the shop. The RB's were excellently displayed out on shelves, which allowed you to slowly walk through the options for your handcrafted root beer float or your take home four pack! Yum! The shops hostess, Alana recommended Jack Black's "Dead Red Root Beer" and I am so glad they did! Not sure what Brazilian Guarana is but I'm sure it's responsible for the slight spice noted and enjoyed. OTJ & RB gets 5 stars for the Ambiance and Service (Alana was amazing) Food: RB's are Classic Americana that's an auto 5, am I right?? Disagree let me know! Highly Critical Duo!

Buy one get one free! I tried Old Mountain Root Beer. Prob could have got a better one but with the ice cream it was so so good!

This place has a large surplus of many different brands of beef jerky. I happened to try the Astro brand. It's clearly trying to be a competitor to you know what if you're in the jerky community . I like it though! Fresh, good chew, nice flavor. Plus this location is in old town, so fun to walk around!!

My sister ordered the same drink iced, it also tasted good and a bit more spicy. My brother got a hot chai latte and liked it. Mom ordered a matcha latte with coconut milk. Overall, drinks are prepared well. Their chocolate drinks are worth it, especially if you like your hot chocolate a bit strong and more bitter than traditional American hot chocolate. All drinks come with oat milk (oatly barista) btw! You can sub for coconut milk, almond, or soy. I didn't buy any chocolate truffles, but noticed they're all vegan. They had some conchas and pastries too, all gluten-free. Didn't try them but they look promising! Apparently they offer free chocolate tasting, but the barista/cashier was busy making our drinks and had a couple of customers waiting so we didn't bother. They offer a variety of truffles and chocolate boxes.

My mom found Tahona while we were scouting locations, so my fiancé and I booked a reservation for date night to check it out. Zach greeted us at the door, walked us to our table, thanked us for coming, and sent over free tastings of a few of their drinks. That, plus how quickly he responded to every email, made the decision easy. For the shower itself, he opened the restaurant early, brought his staff in ahead of schedule, and gave us great pricing. As guests arrived, he personally asked each one what they'd like to drink. The margaritas were outstanding, including a subtly delicious banana version. Our buffet station had tacos made to order in front of us, croquetas, empanadas, and more, all excellent. I have never experienced hospitality like this from a restaurant. Zach and the entire Tahona team made the day genuinely special, and I can't wait to come back for the food again soon.
