An 11 and 8 year old review warrants an updated one. Old West is a staple in this area that is always mentioned when people are looking for Mexican food. The parking lot is often to the brim and there's a reason for that. We came on a Sunday, after church, for lunch. The parking lot had plenty of spaces available and plenty of open tables. We were greeted and promptly seated. They have your standard Mexican fare of tacos, enchiladas, burritos, quesadillas, etc. We appreciate the well-priced kids meals and the options they have for the kids. Our daughter loves their kids quesadilla and adds shrimp to it. It's one of her favorite things and she begs to eat here. Our son is hit or miss on Mexican food so he'll often get a more "American" food item. My husband appreciates the amount of food they serve and never goes hungry, even at lunch. I've always enjoyed the food I have received and usually have enough to take home for another meal. Between good service and good food, this is a great choice for Mexican food.

This is my second time in Des Moine. My first experience I had take out fajitas. They were absolutely delicious!! My second time I fined in and had a chicken quesadilla. It was shreddedchivjen not my fav but I ate it. ! Get the guac!

    #8, but not quite?

Waiter is efficient and smiled. Clientele is family, nice happy sounds. Noise absorption is not a priority. Chips (made here) and salsa needed hot sauce to spice it up some. (I do like it hotter). Ordered the #8. Two tacos ( pick your favorite), and an enchilada. Wanted rice and beans, ordered separately. Waiting on Mexicano Guacamole. Order came not as expected, but it all tasted just

When we entered, the cashier girl did not greet us, just asked how many people. We got seated to a booth, they did not offer us a high chair for baby. The place was not even busy yet, and we had to wait about 5 minutes until we got our waters and chips and salsa. The shrimp i had ordered was cooked too long, looked like pieces of chicken. We also had ordered a taco salad and the beef was bland. The meat was stuck together like it was just thrown in the bowl. The steak meat was not flavorful. The servers did not come back to ask if everything was okay, and if we needed water refills. I am certainly not trying this restaurant again.

First time at Old West. The interior was clean and reminded me of an old time western movie. We were seated promptly and drink orders were taken. Having this be our first visit, we needed more time to look over the large food menu. We ordered a pitcher of margaritas for $16.99. They bring you chips and salsa. The chips are definitely not homemade, but the salsa had good flavor. I ordered the taquitos Mexicanos and my boyfriend ordered the beef chimicganga. The food was ready within 15 minutes and I must say, for the price was actually pretty good. It's no hands down best Mexican food I've ever had, but for the price, it's what you pay for. Food had good flavor and variety. The cheese dip is a must have. Has a nice jalapeno flavor to it but not too spicy. The margaritas I could tell were just the stock house from a jug, but they added extra tequila and after my 2nd glass my cheeks were warm. For two meals, cheese dip and a pitcher of margaritas we got out of there for less than $45. Absolutely worth a try and we will be back!

Enchiladas are properly seasoned as one would find in Mexico. No big chunks of onion or peppers.

I suggested here instead, mainly because none of us had been here before. I'm glad I did. We went on a Friday night. There was snow on the ground and several parking spaces available. We walked in from the lot behind the building and immediately realized how cozy this restaurant actually is. There had to be fewer than 20 tables, and a few spaces at the bar. We were told there would be a 20 minute wait. One of the bartenders struck up a conversation with us while we were waiting for our table. We could tell there were a lot of regulars here because the bartenders greeted most of the folks by name. And most of the folks were also greeting other guests by name. When we weren't talking to the bartender we were watching him pour the drinks. They were clearly not stingy with the alcohol here. In fact, all 3 of us decided to order drinks with our food That's something we don't normally do. For our meals, I ordered the 16-oz New York strip and my wife and stepson both ordered ribeyes. We each got a dinner salad and baked potato to go with the steaks. The salads were a classic, minimal dinner salad with lettuce, cheese, croutons, and a small cup of dressing. The thing is, the dressing was more than adequate to cover my salad. While we waited for our steaks we were mesmerized by how efficiently the wait staff worked the room. Tables are fairly close here, and the waitresses were constantly moving back and forth. The service was great. The atmosphere was great. And we kept noticing all the people coming in were greeted by name by the staff and other guests. Soon after finishing our salads, the steaks arrived. They were cooked perfectly. There was even a sprig of parsley on each plate. I haven't seen garnish on a plate like that in decades. I managed to get a photo of my New York strip, but not either of the ribeyes. We all dug in quickly. My wife soon commented on how good the baked potato was. I wondered how good it could be. There were packages of butter on the table and the potatoes came with sour cream. There had been no mandatory list of questions about add-ons to the potatoes. After eating half my steak I decided it was time to find out. This was one of the best baked potatoes I can remember eating. It wasn't over-done or under-done. It was cooked perfectly. Even after 15 or so minutes of sitting on my pate while I ate steak it was still hot. Everything was cooked perfectly. The drinks were good. You could tell all the guests were enjoying themselves. In the end, I was the only one at my table who didn't take home leftovers. Our waitress promptly arrived with to-go boxes. I'm pretty sure all 3 of us are looking forward to going back. And it's a good thing I didn't drive. I was feeling my one little drink on the way home.

This restaurant has a history that 's over 60 years old with a rich history (think traditional…read more"supper club" style which provides fond memories for many). Yet, it has new owners as of this year but I'll bet nothing much has changed since "the good ol' days". As you can see from my outdoor pics, and my pic of the chairs (red vinyl), it's a throwback to yesteryear. Not to say this is bad, just to get an understanding of what you're walking into. At lunchtime on this week day, there was plenty of parking in the rear (and the restaurant was almost full). The tables were a bit close and it was a bit noisy, but everyone was polite and in good spirits. As you can see from my pic, we started lunch with Onion Rings. These are relatively thinly sliced and breaded with batter that ends up being quite crunchy. There was plenty, and then some. We shared a Garbage Salad (see my pic). This truly has a bit of everything in it. It starts off Greek style with deli meats, artichoke hearts, olives and ends with shrimp: all topped on a bed of lettuce and veggies. It's served with Italian dressing, which had usual, traditional flavors. We finished with Jess's Slow Cooked Ribs (see my pic): this is a staple of theirs highlighting their signature BBQ sauce. There was plenty of meat on the ribs, which fell off the bone with the slightest of tugs. The BBQ smoke was earthy and paired well with the sauce. Their sauce was quite sweet, ample and tasted like it was applied after the ribs were cooked

I had the Crescent City Chicken, and it was enough food for two. The kitchen was clearly putting in the effort. But the standout was our server, Allianna. I'd missed my connection and got bumped by a last minute female runner even though I was first on the standby list. I stepped off the hotel shuttle, checked into my room, dropped off my baggage and walked here for dinner. Needless to say, I walked in the door quite hungry. I sat at the bar for the quickest service. I ordered a local lager, Des Moines Exile's Maria lager ($6.75/5% ABV). To eat, I seldom go wrong with fried catfish. This time I got the fried catfish strips, with tartar sauce, 2 large hush puppies, and a bunch of fries ($16.99). The smooth lager hit the spot and the fried dinner really filled me up. Catfish average, hush puppies had great texture and taste, and fries were hot. The bartender/waitress really wasn't too attentive. Spent most of the time talking to other customers and staff. I ordered another lager from Exile. This one was an award winning Ruthie Gold lager ($7/4.9% ABV). I preferred this lager to the first one. It had a more rounded taste and mouthfeel. The huge meal didn't wow me, but it did feel me up. Thumbs up to the two local lagers I tried. They were good. Come here if you need a large meal and mediocre service.
