Biscuits n Gravy (Best in Class)
    Shawn V.

We had breakfast here two mornings and their breakfast dishes are SPECIAL! We had amazing service both days and they were sure to take great care of us. The place is small inside though is the only issue for larger parties. The eggs and sausage were good the first day and a co-worker got their sourdough french toast and the slices were cut so thick!! He said that it was some of the best he has EVER had. The second day, I got their Biscuits and Gravy and OMG, this is a dish that you have got to get at least once!!! The biscuits are killer, then they add sausage patties, then sausage gravy (so good) and then the topper that blew me away, poached eggs! The poached eggs were cooked to perfection and added so much flavor. Top notch place!!!

We love this place, it's in hotel Fort DSM and the atmosphere is nice and beautiful to take pictures. The food are delicious especially the pork belly Burnts end. And the affair are amazing and friendly. Highly recommend

I recently dinned at Proudfoot & Birds with my wife and some friends for my birthday. We started with a bottle of Caymus (pricey up-charge) and the Farmer's Cheese appetizer both of which were excellent. The wife and I split the split the Chicken & Biscuits. There is a 10 dollar split plate fee. I thought the chicken and gravy were good. The biscuit was a little hard, but that may have been on purpose. The restaurant provided a free dessert. Overall, the restaurant was some upscale dining and I would return.

Proudfoot & Bird in Des Moines is a classy fine dining experience with a historical ambiance of marble staircases and elaborate gold ceiling inlays restored by painters lying on their backs (sound familiar? It's giving Sistine Chapel). The restaurant is named after the esteemed architectural firm Proudfoot & Bird. Upon entering, the huge circular bar greets you with their twist on a classic...A Vanilla Old Fashioned. The menu at Proudfoot & Bird threw me. It has several international influences I wasn't expecting. Our meal began with the farmer's cheese, accompanied by marinated local tomatoes and basil. The Kung Pao Octopus was a standout dish, creatively blending Asian flavors. The octopus was tender and perfectly cooked, paired with coconut sticky rice. The perfect spice. If you want a great meal and elegant dinner in Des Moines, I found this for you.

This place is fantastic! A great spot to add to the food scene in Des Moines! We've been here twice now- once while staying at the hotel and another to celebrate our anniversary! Both for breakfast and dinner! Can't say enough great things about this restaurant! Definitely an upscale dining experience! The service is excellent and the atmosphere is like being transported back into a 1920s movie. The decor is top notch.

I was staying at the hotel (Fort Des Moines- Hilton Curio Collection), in a great part of downtown Des Moines. I typically try to go to places not at the hotel I'm staying in but this one came highly recommended by a colleague. It was a slow night when I went, so the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was there was no hostess or greeting for 10-15 minutes & no one from the bar which is right in the middle of the entrance greeted or acknowledged me either. Eventually a blonde female server did greet me & she acted super annoyed that I wanted a table because I was traveling by myself. When she did seat me in a room of of open tables 10 feet from the door, she probably should have waited more than taking three steps away before saying to the other servers behind me, "I don't want it, do one of you want it?" Needless to say after that part of the night & I luckily did get a different server (Brad), the service and food were exquisite. Brad was the perfect ratio of attentive but also gave me space. (Which as a former server I know can be hard on slower nights.) The menu was pretty straight forward with a smaller selection of options but seemed to still offer something that was appealing to most. The first pleasant surprise of the night after I ordered was a single delightful cheese stuffed meatball with a vodka sauce on it. I ordered the Steak Bavette for my entree & it was perfectly cooked to the medium rare temp and had classic seasoning. The potatoes were also cooked well and served on a verde sauce that gave them a little extra flavor. I had ordered a side of asparagus in an attempt to have some veggies balance out the meal. All the food was perfect! The portions were larger than anticipated & I could have definitely split this with one or two more people. After I had to box most of my meal up to take with me the 2nd surprise of the night came at the end. I had ordered a second glass of wine to take back to my room with me and Brad presents this rich ping pong sized chocolate truffle on a little dish. It paired amazingly with the wine. It was a great way to end the night before heading to my room. All in all it was worth the upfront poor welcoming to get the experience I had with Brad, who did a fantastic job,

This is the bar/restaurant at my hotel across from work. My boss & coworker met me here for breakfast one morning. They don't have a large breakfast menu, but we each found what we wanted. We had a booth and lovely server. They chose scrambled eggs & toast. I had the oatmeal with fruit. I asked for blueberries and they provided them. It was filling and delicious.

Staying at Hotel Fort Des Moines for the evening and this in-house restaurant looked like the perfect place to celebrate my MA with my mother. Proudfoot & Bird was beautiful and elegant with lovely jazz music playing in the background. Cara took great care of us and was warm, friendly, and went above and beyond to give us some little extra treats to celebrate! All of the food and drinks were amazing! I loved everything here. This restaurant is truly a gem of the historical landmark. Thank you so much to everyone for your kind hospitality! I will be back again! :)

The place was elegant and the service was second to none. The food was just ok, No great shakes. We split an appetizer and an entree. It is a bougie place so not sire it is high on my list to repeat.

Updating my review because of the simply amazing steak I had here last night. It was the rib eye with mushroom ragout and blue cheese crumbles. For me, this is the best steak among all the establishments in Des Moines. Now you have to like a steak with sauce and obviously mushrooms but for me....this is hands down the best steak I've had in maybe my ENTIRE life! It was cooked perfectly medium, and covered in mushrooms and shallots, blanketed in a demi glace sauce and sprinkled with blue cheese crumbles. The platonic ideal of steak for me. I didn't need a side or anything else, the sauce made the steak more flavorful and the mushrooms added umami. My amazing waiter made me some horseradish cream (off menu item) that helped to cut the richness. Seriously nothing better, better than Flemings, Ruth's Chris, 801, blah blah, blah they are all distant memories when compared to this steak. It's such a good steak it deserves a proper name....and I shall name her "Lucy". Lucy you are amazing and changed how I will look at steaks forever.

Like probably most Americans, I haven't tried a lot of South American cuisine so I didn't know what to expect. I guess I was expecting something like Mexican food. Well, it's definitely a lot different than Mexican food. Peruvian food isn't very spicy and the seasonings are different, yet still tasty. There a big Chinese influence on Peruvian food, too. I got the Lomo Saltado, a popular Peruvian dish with stir-fried beef, onions and tomatoes served with rice and French fries. My husband got the Chaufa al Wok, an oriental Peruvian fried rice with chicken. The fries kind of threw me at first. I wasn't expecting that. The dish was very good and had a nice flavor. My husband loved his dish and thought it was delicious. With both of our dishes it was interesting to see how much of a Chinese influence there is. What my husband absolutely loved the most is their homemade horchata. It tasted different than Mexican horchata so he asked what was in it. Our server said it was made was cacao beans instead of just rice and cinnamon. It had a pale brown color to it, too. I also liked the seasoned corn nuts that came with two different sauces--a sweet one and savory one. We both thought the prices were a little high but not so much that we wouldn't come back. The service was very good. Our server was friendly and helped us decide what to order. She was very knowledgeable about the menu items. At the end of our meal both she and the owner (I think) asked us how we liked everything and if there was anything they could have done to make things more enjoyable. I mentioned that my food came out much earlier than my husband's so I was almost done by the time his came out. The owner apologized for the wait and we really appreciated that. They also serve empanadas, pupusas and tamales. We're going to try these the next time we come back. Someone at the table next to us ordered the pupusas and they looked yummy. We were pleasantly pleased with how tasty the food was despite being a lot different than what we were expecting.

Being in a transitional phase his kitchen is useless so if we want to eat it's got to be in a restaurant. We've been everywhere so no clue how this gem snuck past us. I would put them next to any of the high end places downtown without a second thought. The ambiance is clean, casual and cozy - think Colorado log cabin. It's not a big place so I imagine you'll find long waits on weekends. If so, wait. Trust me. It wasn't crowded because we typically don't venture out until late but 3/4 of the tables were occupied and several people were at the bar. Even so, it was easy to carry on a conversation without needing to raise our voices. It's difficult to choose what to order because everything sounds great. We ordered chicken fried oyster mushrooms for an app and they set the tone for everything else. Perfectly breaded and seasoned with actual flavor being the stale oil taste of a lot of fried apps. I had the Lobster Mac and it was absolutely decadent. There was a generous amount of lobster and the pieces themselves were substantial. The blend of cheeses was perfect. For the side (which wasn't even necessary because the size of the Mac was more than big enough) I got the Boursin Mushroom Au Gratin. I can't think of a word that describes how delicious it was. Perfect creaminess, rich with a slight tang...it could have stood on its own. My fiancé ordered the Iowa Chop and we were both shocked at the size of it. Again (yawn) cooked just right, not even a hint of the dryness you see a lot with chops. The Creamed Brussels Sprouts were great but I had eaten myself sick at this point so I had to admit defeat. Portions were big enough that I had plenty in the take home container for a whole meal the next day. I wanted to try the amazing looking pie but needed to be able to fit through the door to go home. Next time for sure. Service was really good. The server was laid back and quick with recommendations that she could back up instead of the standard "I like it" you get. I was shocked at the reasonable prices. These days $20 for a mediocre burger is standard so I couldn't believe the quality of food for the price. Our running joke is that once a restaurant starts laminating their menus, the quality is about to tank so I'm keeping my fingers crossed theirs steer clear. It's independently owned by the same people that own Barntown Brewing a few doors down. We will definitely try that out based on our experience here. My only critique is that they serve Pepsi instead of Coke. Seems like DSM leans that way which breaks my heart. My southern roots and common sense keep me loyal to Coca Cola. Where I grew up when you order a Coke the server asks what kind of Coke because it's just what you call every soft drink. Go. Go tonight. You won't regret it.

Tonight, my wife opted for the Sweet Potato Gnocchi with grilled shrimp (see picture) - at our server Chelsea's suggestion (Chelsea was great). While I usually prefer trying different dishes vs. ordering what I've had before, it was Wednesday and I'm a sucker for specials...so again opted for Walleye Wednesday (see picture). I'd missed my connection and got bumped by a last minute female runner even though I was first on the standby list. I stepped off the hotel shuttle, checked into my room, dropped off my baggage and walked here for dinner. Needless to say, I walked in the door quite hungry. I sat at the bar for the quickest service. I ordered a local lager, Des Moines Exile's Maria lager ($6.75/5% ABV). To eat, I seldom go wrong with fried catfish. This time I got the fried catfish strips, with tartar sauce, 2 large hush puppies, and a bunch of fries ($16.99). The smooth lager hit the spot and the fried dinner really filled me up. Catfish average, hush puppies had great texture and taste, and fries were hot. The bartender/waitress really wasn't too attentive. Spent most of the time talking to other customers and staff. I ordered another lager from Exile. This one was an award winning Ruthie Gold lager ($7/4.9% ABV). I preferred this lager to the first one. It had a more rounded taste and mouthfeel. The huge meal didn't wow me, but it did feel me up. Thumbs up to the two local lagers I tried. They were good. Come here if you need a large meal and mediocre service.
