The place is super cozy and rustic - all dark wood, fire places, etc. We had no expectations going in and we were very happy with the food and the service. The chef came by and even sat down with us for a bit to give us some dining recommendations while we were in Maine - he also happened to be from or once lived in NJ like us. We each had an order of the gumbo and shared a side of onion rings. The gumbo was tasty and the perfect portion. The onion rings were also really good with the dipping sauce. We decided to share a piece of blueberry cheesecake before we hit the road and had zero regrets. It was a really pleasant meal and I would recommend this restaurant if you are in Searsport.

I'll start with the food: I am a food snob. Not a foodie.. a SNOB. When I cook at home, I use the highest quality ingredients and flavor matters. You'll never see me rave about food that contains any pre-made or processed ingredients. Restaurants are a low-profit business and typically cut corners to watch profits. So, it's rare to find a restaurant that takes obvious pride in their food and DELIVERS on that pride. The Homeport Tavern is a gem! We ordered the French onion soup and calamari appetizers and the Tavern burgers. The calamari was hand breaded and fresh, not from frozen. So delicious. The soup was the best French onion soup we've ever had - did I taste a hint of Jamaican all-spice? This tavern isn't afraid to use expensive spices to achieve ultimate taste. The burgers were to die for - incredibly fresh tasting grass fed angus, cooked to a perfect medium rare (most places can't seem to cook a proper medium rare, but the Tavern nailed it). The crispy fried piece of pork belly atop the burger was amazing - cut thick and seared at a high heat for a delightful texture and flavor. The coleslaw, obviously fresh and homemade with a poppy seed in-house dressing, was a nice palette cleanser between divine burger bites. Topping this all off is the best selection of draft beers we've seen in a while! Our server was perfect in every way. She was attentive, knowledgeable, accommodating, friendly, and professional. Top notch. Now let's get to the atmosphere. The Tavern is an adorable old Maine mixed with rustic old Irish charm type of architecture. We could hear Gaelic pub music - think minstrel - before walking in. When we entered, we saw an Irish folk band of about 6 musicians playing gleefully, which, along with the old Irish pub atmosphere, truly made us feel as if we're were transported to a time and place in folklore. The entire experience made us fall in love with Homeport Tavern and we will definitely be back again and again.

The owners, Matt & George, could not have been more welcoming from the moment we walked in the front door. The property itself is oozing with rich history and the interiors have been brilliantly restored (well done, George!), making this stay feel like both a step into the past and luxury pampering. Matt is quite the chef, and the inn's evening menu sings with local comfort foods, each item delicious and unique (we tried most of the menu). Downeast Maine may have stolen my heart on this trip, but it's the Pentagoet that has been top of mind since we left. I can't wait to return!

Being there makes you feel so far away in the best way possible. But the shining star of the town has to be the Pentagoet run by the most wonderful innkeepers, Matt & George, and a truly lovely staff! Everyone we encountered on their team was kind, friendly and offered excellent service. It's easy to just park your car on main street or on the side of the inn and then from the minute you walk into the space, you are blown away at all of the decor and details that make it feel comfortable, classy and modern and at the same time so true to the inn's Victorian history. You can tell each corner of the inn has been decorated intentionally and with much care. Our room (#3) was comfortable, clean and had so many fantastic details like a signature smell, complimentary bath/shower items, and of course - the signature balcony (AMAZING!). The communal spaces are fantastic as well. The patio is gorgeous, the porch is so peaceful, and the pub is incredibly cozy and chic. Breakfast was delicious and they also offer coffee service upstairs outside of the rooms, which is such a great touch. The food and drinks at the pub are also outstanding!! For good reason, the restaurant books up fast so definitely always make a reservation whether you are staying or only coming for dinner but you certainly won't regret experiencing the cocktails (love the blueberry one..so Maine!) and the food. The menu is seasonal I believe but everything we tried was absolutely delicious. The ode to lobster on the menu was also quintessential Maine and so good.. my husband had lobster linguini. I had short rib sliders that were also amazing. If you get the chance to try the blueberry cobbler or chocolate tres leches, do it!! Those are two desserts my husband and I will never forget. Actually.. the whole place and experience is something we will never forget. It was a highlight of our Maine vacation and we will forever be grateful to Matt and George for the space they have created and remarkable levels of hospitality that feel truly special! Thank you Matt, George and the Pentagoet team!

After searching for dog friendly places in the New England area for a couple of hours we finally stumbled upon Pressey House in Oakland, ME on Airbnb. Neither of us had ever heard of the town but a quiet Bed & Breakfast on a lake sounded good to us. A few nights later we made the 3 hour drive to Oakland, ME where we checked into the Granite Suite. Originally we were a little dubious because the walls of the suite are described as being the original foundation of the home from 1850 so we were afraid that it might feel like we were in a dark, damp cave but when our Host, Nikki, showed us to where we were going to be staying nothing could have been further from the truth. Although all the of the walls were either granite or brick, the front of the suite was bright with natural light thanks to the window and door and the back of the suite with the comfy, King sized bed had a cozy feel to it. There are a couple of cool little brick arches in the suite that are a unique architectural feature. The bathroom was surprisingly roomy which you don't always find at a B&B and even though there is no bathtub the shower stall had excellent water pressure and didn't feel cramped . The suite also had a pretty good size kitchenette which was really handy to have the two nights we were there. My favorite feature though was the gas fireplace. Each night my fiancé and I spent hours in front of it playing cards and relaxing. It was especially welcome since it snowed while we were there, and nothing is better than coming in from the cold and warming up in front of the fire. There is WiFi available and our signal was strong enough that we experienced no internet issues on our phones and tablets. There is a main common area that was split into two sections: The front section which has a sitting area in front of a wood burning fireplace and the back section which overlooks the lake and functions as a dining space. The quintessential New England feel of the room is warm, inviting and really makes you think of the long history of the home. Although we were the only ones having breakfast each morning in the common area because everyone else was a long term rental, Nikki made sure that she still pulled out all the stops for us. One morning we had fruit salad, cinnamon rolls, homemade frittata, and sausage and then the next day we feasted on fruit salad, pancakes and homemade corned beef hash. The first night that we arrived Nikki had left homemade cookies in our room. The following day at breakfast she got some ideas of what kind of desserts we liked and we came back from a day exploring the area to some homemade strawberry thumbprint cookies in our room (which my fiancé LOVED). So, saying that Nikki is a good cook, who will feed you well feels like an understatement. Our most favorite part of the Pressey House though was Nikki, her husband Ron and their family (pups included). They were extremely friendly, professional, accommodating in every way and it's clear that they want every guest to have an amazing experience when you stay with them. From chatting with Nikki & Ron we learned that they have just recently purchased the inn and have some big plans for it. We can say with certainty that we will be going back for another visit and we look forward to seeing any improvements that they make since it will make an already fabulous B&B even better. We're also looking forward to getting to see the gorgeous lake that Pressey House sits on during the summertime.

We truly appreciated their hospitality and generosity. Waking up on that gorgeous lake in the warm summer, the kids running, jumping, kayaking, playing instead of being on their electronics was an incredible feeling. A dog-friendly, free shuttle will pick you up at the doorstep and take you around Schoodic Point (the prettiest part of Acadia National Park) and drop you back at the Inn after a hike. The backyard is fenced and has several outdoor seating areas where you can play fetch with Fido, sit by the fire, read a book in the hammock, or have a cookout (grill, wood, utensils, etc. provided) in a beautifully candle-lit setting. We also enjoyed playing board games with our 11 year old (they have hundreds!) one rainy night, how wonderful that our dogs could hang out in the room with us--Leisure Lee, especially, appreciated the dog bed provided. There's on site pet-sitting offered for an extra fee. But not with just anyone! Pam and Arnold are pet experts, breeders (pugs), groomers--they know animals inside/out and really spend time with them (long walks on the beach, playtime, feedings, etc.--they treat pets like people). We asked them to sit with our two puppies (bloodhound and boxer-mix--leather- chewing piranhas, really) from 6 am to 9 pm while we went into Bar Harbor for the day and when we returned Azy was in Pam's lap, and Leisure Lee was asleep, listening to music, by the fire--I don't know of any conventional hotel that offers pet-owners such peace of mind via this service. The breakfast--wow! Fresh fruit, yogurt, granola bars, organic oatmeal, bagels, cream cheese, wheat germ--you can eat healthy if you wish, but they also have pop tarts, kid-cereals, chocolate muffins, fancy creamers for coffee, all sorts of juices, unlimited pet treats and bottled waters. A family on a budget, we loved that we were able to place our own groceries, too, on the fridge shelf provided. That said, Three Sisters Café, down the road a ways, offered great deals on good food when we ate out, and the food stand in front of The Fisherman's Inn had inexpensive lobster rolls to die for. While there, we met an Italian couple, a family from Maine, and a retired librarian--all quiet, conscientious, interesting folks we loved meeting. But Pam and Arnold are the warm, whip-smart people (add to their pet-knowledge incomparable knowledge of fun things to do in the area) that really make the place into a one-of-a-kind, exceptional home away from home--they go way out of their way to make sure their guests are cared for, comfortable, and happy. We loved our trip here, and plan to go back, often.

We were "greeted" by Arnold, telling us that we had the best room in the house, and because the rest of the inn was booked, we were to stay in that room only. It had a tiny, up high window, was about 40 degrees for several hours until it heated up, there was no water, kettle, or SOAP! When we asked for soap and shampoo, we were told that they were not included. We also were told that there would be no breakfast or even coffee. We were there offseason, so nothing else was open, so we just stayed in that terrible, claustrophobic, freezing cold room with no water. It was the worst place that my husband and I remember ever staying.
