Despite it being a weekday the bill was $343.35 as the tourist season had started. We had a rented a vehicle and the Bar Harbor Hampton was priced even higher than this one. We choose Hamptons because of the Hilton ownership oversight, although individually they are privately managed so quality will vary. We came from Minnesota an had just spent three nights at the Portland Downtown-Waterfront Hampton and were in Bar Harbor for a cruise and to check out Arcadia National Park. As it turns out we should have spent the three nights here and just one at the sketchy Portland Hampton. My girlfriend's daughter insists on separate beds for all of us. One great thing about Hamptons is that a rollaway bed added to a double queen room is not an issue, although the quality of the bed itself varies greatly by location. Here our requested rollaway was waiting for us with linens and pillows, and it was a decent one unlike the broken one we got in Portland that also didn't have a pillow or top sheet. My girlfriend actually commented on how nice the room was, a rare nod of approval as we are both a bit cynical. The thermostat had its own remote, the Hilton app actually worked on the TV if I remember right, there was an ice bucket and even a couple mini recycling bins. The view was just the local shopping mall, but that's not what we got the room for. One slight disappointment was being refused the token Hilton Silver Level membership benefit of free bottles of water on arrival. Maybe this isn't a 'select' Hampton. The workout room here was large and modern, unlike many Hampton workout rooms. The pool was also well kept. The normally no frills Hampton breakfast was way above par at this property. There was an abundance of choices and healthy options in bakery, hot and cold items, fresh fruit, toppings, and beverages. This included dairy free and gluten free options like Silk almond milk and Udi's gluten free muffins. See the image postings. This was an especially welcome sight after the sparse Portland Hampton breakfast bar of the previous three days. A surprising discovery I got on checking out the lobby after unpacking was the 'Iced Coffee Bar'. The receptionist told us they were the only Hampton to have one. It had a nice sign, coffee container, a dozen Monin syrups, creamer, ice bucket, cups, stir sticks, and napkins. See the image posting. My girlfriend and daughter planned to try it before we left early the next morning as I had understood from the receptionist it was available 24 hours. Unfortunately, it was taken down during breakfast. I'm not sure the girls even saw it. Other then missing out on the Iced Coffee Bar and not getting the token Hampton Silver Membership bottled water perk, this may have been our best Hampton stay of the dozen or so different Hampton properties we have tried. It should be the textbook model in management for other Hamptons to follow.

Our king room 301 was clean and spacious. Mera, Sarah, Sasha, Jay, Stewart and Valerie welcomed us and made us feel at home. Excellent service and hospitality 5 stars. Les greeted us and took the time to show us to our room on the third floor telling us all about the history of the property on the way. Someone complained in another review that there are stairs up to the third floor. It is true. They are wooden, steep, and full of character. The floors are original and slope and creak as expected, but are beautifully painted and well kept. Our room was beautiful and the bathroom was perfect, looking like it was remodeled yesterday. Since we realized there was not going to be a lot of dining choices, we stopped at a grocery on our way in for a light picnic dinner of cheese, crackers, fruit and a bottle of wine to enjoy by the water. It was a perfect evening to watch the sunset on one of the two waterfront areas on the property. It was only my husband and me. We could see another couple sitting on the rocks, but it still felt so private and it truly felt like something out of a romantic movie. The next morning we enjoyed the best blueberry muffins provided by the host and coffee on the front porch of the inn. As we sat looking down toward the water both a deer and a red fox came through the yard as a humming flew around the beautiful flowers. Every staff member we encountered was friendly and went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. I almost want to keep this gem a secret!

The Inn itself is quaint and historic and the perfect location for an event or a group getaway. It is right next to the water and just beautiful. There are canoes to use as well as games and books inside. They are also just great restaurant and bar as well, with amazing specialty drinks and an eclectic collection of local beer and IPAs on tap. I highly recommend this place for your summer or fall getaway. I know we'll be back.

Daniel (the other person at the front desk) was nice and much more pleasant to deal with. We do not recommend this hotel as we find the attitude in general being too rude (it is not only the north east attitude, we lived in the northeast for decades. This was way worse). Again though, thanks Daniel for being nice and helping us with our refund. For Jeremy: learn a thing or two about customer relations.

They have brought a remarkable vision to an otherwise pretty ordinary dining experience at this historic 1793 inn in charming Deer Isle (we know bc we dined here last year, too). For this their first year their executive chef Courtney Burns has done something really innovative: she's brought in a summer of guest chefs, each who serves for a month or so, during which they prepare a menu reflecting their unique vision, drawing from the bounty of local and regional Maine small batch artisanal ingredients. This is brilliant: a rotation of innovative chefs each with their own vision. So long as the quality remains high, then one can return to dine at the same place but with a different menu several times over any given season. We were lucky to have meals designed by chef Andre Garza, from Houston. I had the short ribs. They were delicious, cooked for 72 hours, very tender, served on a bed of slightly sweet carrot puree, and then topped with spray of arugula and a swirl of some very delicately infused oil, infused with just the faintest scent of a smoky pepper - not sure if it was chipotle or exactly what. I was a little concerned that the pepper influence might overwhelm the short ribs, but I was impressed with what was delivered. It was perfect. Whatever the specific pepper and technique he used was, he used it delicately and in such a way as to marry the umami experience of the short ribs against the sweet carrot puree and the slightly bitter arugula. It was actually very, very, VERY good and a lesser chef might have turned it into some tex mex experience, which I was not interested in on this occasion. The kitchen hit a home run with this. Others in the party had the baked halibut, served atop creamy grits, with a smoked fish sauce; and another had the the lobster toast and scallops in some citrus broth (two appetizers, as an entree). Everyone was very happy with their meals. Remarkable. I'd put this meal up against any great contemporary restaurant here or anywhere. We shared 2 desserts: a blueberry "crumble", more like a blueberry applesauce consistency, with thyme flower crumble on it (nice touch); and a very soft cheese with a dollop of dolce de leche next to it.. Both were really great, and together they were sublime. We're thrilled that the new team has taken the reins and will look forward for trying out the other guest chefs' creations over the course of the summer.

Otherwise, beautiful place with a lovely room. The room was clean, spacious, well appointed and was well lit with a nice window out front. Check-in was easy and the people who work there are very nice. The gentleman cleaning my room was outside when I was putting my duffel bag back up in the cargo carrier on top of my car and came right over to help me. Like I said, 10 out of 10!
