We do a LOT of escape rooms. Like a lot. So on this road trip we decided to do as many locally themed rooms as possible. So after a day of seeing his grave and at the museum of the American Revolution we did this Ben Franklin themed room. And it was AWESOME. To be fair, I like a room that lets you wander around instead of forcing you down a path...and I like a room you get rewarded for looking at random things instead of having everything spelled out for you. I also like a room that has a lot of spaces that don't do anything. And this room had all of that. We ended up not needing any clues but got REALLY close to being stuck a few times. It just felt like a really good payoff for the puzzles in this room and a very cool story. read more

Team building activity! Good thing we escaped with about 5 minutes remaining, because I declared in the beginning that I would resign if we didn't make it out. Not that my boss would hold me to it, but I should refrain from my dramatic declarations. The Olde City Escape Games is located in an office building, but there was a sign that pointed us to the correct building. Once inside, look for them in the name of the tenants and ring it like a doorbell. That felt like step 1 of the test. Once inside we were all in their lobby and encouraged to use the restroom before we get started. Our game master was awesome. I blame the Sangria. I wish I remembered his name! He was super fun and engaging throughout the experience. This is an escape room so I don't want to give anything away so I'll try to stay high level. Since we were in Philadelphia we decided to do something historic themed. We did their "A Quest for Freedom" escape room where you explore Benjamin Franklin's study and operate his print shop on a mission to help the American Revolution. Each clue or item is used only once, so be sure to track what you have used or what you have not used, cause it would mean you still need to use it. My team and I had a blast and I definitely feel closer to them after successfully escaping together. We might have been sharper and solved the clue faster if we came here before dinner and drinks... Well done 2084 escape room. I plan to do the Midnighters with friends later on. Would've done more than one, but the others weren't ready to try that many. I'm terrible at these, but I love them. I was able to help a lot more than usual, and most of the people were able to help in some way. Everyone had fun and that is what really mattered. A lot of hands-on contraptions and good flow. I have probably done 13 escape rooms by now not including this one today. Escape the 80s, an online one based in Washington state, 4 in KOP, 2 at Franklin Institute, 3 at least in Media, one in far NE Philly, 1 in CC - the Office I think it was, one in/near Frederick, MD. I have also done a mini-escape room through working a convention and another free escape room scene that was included as part of a corn maze entry. read more

My husband and I are escape room enthusiasts. Having done approximately 65 escape rooms throughout the US (and one in Canada) - we've seen it all -- the good, the bad, the "what-in-the-world-was-that!" Old Time Escape Room was top 3 on our list!!! What gets an escape room location to the top of our list -- set design, puzzle alignment and logistics, and theme! The set design was great quality and unique! Each piece of the design matched the theme of the room (2084 for us) and was creatively well-done! It's common to see the same types of puzzles everywhere but Old Time Escape Room sets their standard much higher! Unique puzzles but puzzles that matched the theme!! (You'd be surprised how many escape rooms will throw in puzzles just for the sake of throwing in for "one more lock to unlock." Not here! The theme was spot on (not the same themes you see everywhere) and it's the puzzles and set design that pull the theme together! Old Time Escape Room is a #1 spot to visit for a fun time in Philly! Before starting I have to tell you this is the first escape room I've done. We just did it on a whim after we were finished with the Franklin Institute. I absolutely loved it. Super fun and the theme of the "Midnighters" was really cool. It's an old boxing gym. We showed up as a group of 4. We met Glenn who showed up as a group of 1. He said he's been to 50 escape rooms! He loved it too. I'd trust his opinion over mine. I don't think we could've done it without him. I don't want to ruin the room for anyone so all I can say is the clues are very interesting. We made it out with 20 minutes to spare. I will be back. If you haven't done an escape room I implore you to do so. I think Old City would be a great place to start. read more

We have tried a couple of rooms at Gotham and Escape the room Philly. This is so far the worst experience we had in Philly. The room and story are nicely designed. The reviews are so good. So we were very excited to try it, but ended up very disappointed. We had a party of only 2 ppl. We were late for 10 mins, so that we only had 50 mins which was totally fine. Due to the limited time and ppl, we were trying our best to experience as much as we can. So we asked for quite a few clues when getting stucked. However, the clues were so inflexible and didn't depend on what we were stucked on. When one clue didn't work, the gm repeated it multiple times instead of giving new information. For a couple of times when we didn't see a handle or something, it tooks 3-4 hints on what we already knew before getting an useful one. We thus wasted a lot of time on suspecting our understanding of the puzzles. When we told the gm what we feel could be improved on the way for giving hints. Gm just replied: the hints are pre written. It did look like the gm doesn't care about what we are working on, and just read notes. Never had such a struggle that the hints cause even more trouble than the questions. The gm was not enthusiastic from beginning to the end. She didn't noticed us that there were lockers to store our stuff, nor offered to tell players about the unfinished parts, which gms from other two stores always do. read more

Old City Escape Room is great! I took my family (who had never done an escape room before) and they all loved it. We did "The Midnighters" room, which can was layed out really well and the clues were some of the most fun I've ever had to figure out. You pretty much use the entire room and the props super cool. The staff was great! We came with two kids 9 and 11 and even my parents who are both 60 and all of us had an amazing time. I'd definitely recommend it for family or even for a date night (there was a couple that had just did the room before we went in). Next time in Philly, I'll definitely be going back to try their other room and the staff told me that they have a third room that they plan on adding soon. read more

We had an absolute blast at this escape room! We tried their brand new room 2048 and it was terrific. The staff members were so kind and helpful and the room was just super cool! It was the perfect difficulty to make you feel like you were working for it but it wasn't so hard that it wasn't fun. We were a team of 2 that were able to get out with 9 minutes left. I would recommend this place to anyone, especially the 2048 room! I really loved the concept. I can't wait to get back to try the other rooms. ESCAPETHEROOMers went to Olde City Escape Games in Feb 2019. Olde City Escape Games is a really cool establishment. It gives off that 80's "Stranger Things/ Black Mirror" vibe. They currently have two rooms available to choose from with a third on the way. The one that we are trying today is "The Midnighters". Parking the area could be a little hard to find due to the fact that the location is surrounded by museums, restaurants, bars and the Liberty Bell within walking distance. We were fortunate enough to meet with the owners - Brooks & Vi to learn more about the company. Both Brooks & Vi come from an artistic background and their concepts and designs clearly show in their work. In regards to "The Midnighters", the room design was quite impressive and had us fully immersed. From the storyline to the puzzle challenges, along with the music playing in the background, everything was constructed very well as it set the tone for our experience. There was a good mixture of old school and modern day tech. Without giving away too much, there was one puzzle that we found challenging mainly due to the fact that it required "a lot..." in order to continue on. Maybe that could be adjusted or kept in the game. Either way it was doable after a few attempts. A group of four of us just completed both rooms that Olde City Escapes has to offer currently - The Midnighters and A Quest for Freedom. Between the four of us, we have done dozens of escape rooms and are really looking for something to wow us. Olde City definitely did that! We actually had only booked one room (Quest), but had so much fun that we immediately turned around and booked the other. They easily jumped to the top of the list of all the rooms we have ever done. Here's what sets them apart: The staff was absolutely delightful. Shannon gave us an amazing orientation and was rooting for us the whole time. When we elected to do the other room, she even chased down a game master who very kindly stayed on so we could do the Midnighters right then and there. The production quality. Shannon shared with us that the owners are artists and it absolutely shows. The rooms are created with the utmost care and attention to detail. It felt immersive and very much on theme the entire time, which is not something most rooms achieve. The variety of puzzles. There was truly something for every type of puzzle solver and kept us fully engaged and thinking the entire time we were in the room. Tons of surprising and delightful moments. We won't say anything else for fear of giving it away for others! If we had one suggestion for improvement, it would be a minor one. There were a few too many similar types of locks (partially to keep with theme), and some of the keys were a bit sticky and had us questioning if we had it in the right lock. By far and away, Olde City completely knocked out socks off in terms of the love and care that they put into the entire experience. This place is awesome. The owners are super cool- they helped me plan a surprise for my husband's 40th here. They allowed our friends to arrive early and wait in the room to surprise him (& he was very surprised!!!)!! They were super accommodating and great to work with- thank you again Vi and Brooks for helping make our event special!! We all had a great time. We did the Quest for Freedom. The attention to detail in these rooms is amazing. Nothing was overlooked by them. They also have very cool tricks and hidden clues- but I don't want to give anything away!! The music, decor and difficulty level was all perfect. You felt like you stepped back in time. The lobby/waiting area is beautiful too- very chic and comfortable. The owners have heavy experience in design and styling, so it will probably be one of the nicest escape rooms you go to! We went to the historical room that deals with Ben Franklin. It was fairly difficult, but we made it with a few moments to spare. The various props around the room are also impressive as many of them are salvage from decades ago. The two rooms satisfied both couples that night because my boyfriend and I wanted to play a room that had a theme we've never seen before and our friends wanted to play a room that was historical since we were in Philadelphia. The Midnighters - The theme was fun and the room made you feel like you were in a gym. The puzzles were fun and interesting and in theme. I had so much fun in that room and there were definitely puzzles in that room that were done in a fun and unique way. A Quest for Freedom - This was a fun historical escape room with a little bit of a twist. I liked that there were many things for each of us to do and the puzzles were thought out and were also in theme. I enjoyed the story and all the things we had to do to complete our escape. These are the best quality escape rooms I've been to in Philly! I've been to 100+ escape rooms (mostly in the Los Angeles area in California where the production values of escape rooms rival movie sets), and before I tried this company, I had been so disappointed that there seemed to be no escape rooms in Philly that had those levels of production value and intriguing and creative puzzles. I'm so happy there are finally rooms of this quality! We booked both the Revolution room and the Midnighters. The puzzles were so creative and of just the right difficulty! The production values were awesome, and I loved that both rooms had multiple areas to them. The props and decor made it very immersive, and went well with the themes. The owners / workers were really friendly and nice - super accommodating and gave great clues when we needed it! I'm excited to hear they're making a third new room. It's an expertly designed room and had an incredible variety of puzzle types, some of which were totally outside of what I've seen before in other rooms. Styling and props could not have been better, making the experience feel really immersive. My family and I have done many escape rooms in many cities and these are by far some of the greatest! The set design is amazingly immersive, the puzzles are thematically perfect and the game masters keep it fun. Also, if you're a team who wants to really work thru the room and feel accomplished, they will leave you be, only giving hints if you ask (unlike some rooms that hand hold you thru the experience).
