The course is beautiful, with a manageable front and long back 9 (6500 yrs) from the middle tees. The course is open and even high handicap golfers will not lose many balls; there are really only a few spots on the course that are truly out of bounds. The staff is typically very friendly, Jeremy who manages the bag room is particularly nice. The pros are all great too. The whole place is well maintained, as they do host PGA (junior/womens) events from time to time. The greens play very fast towards the end of summer, and some of them slope in ways that will really frustrate anyone. Price-wise, the place is on the upper end if you have no college affiliation (about 140 or so) but is exceptionally cheap for students (35 dollars) so definitely a place to visit if you are in the area and still in school. The course truly cannot be recommended enough, and it offers some exceptional views of both the Williams College campus and the surrounding areas.

Two holes later he came back and followed us for an entire hole, as anyone who is new to the sport knows when someone is tailing you it makes the experience horrible. Then he continues to come back after another hole and tells us to move faster!!Most people who play shoot over 100 so there is no need to be following and adding pressure to new golfers. You would think they would want more of the youth involved into golf to promote the course more but this country club does not care about the public or new golfers. There are also a lack of bathrooms on the course (porta-potty) that makes it very challenging for women golfers, I would expect one every three holes at the least. Other courses have been able to do this. Why would you advertise that the course if open to the public but when new golfers play there there is a tremendous amount of pressure being applied to make them speed up? This makes no sense to me. If you care so much about your members then make it a private course. I will be talking about this experience to many of my fellow golfers and make sure they do not have to deal with this type of environment while golfing. Obviously this country club lacks vision from their higher management, good luck being open in 10 years. This is the first and last time I will be playing at this course.

We bring together around two dozen guys from different generations and different parts of the country for three days of golf, laughs, stories, competition, and a much-needed escape from everyday life. Over the years, Thunderhart has become woven into the fabric of that experience. There is something incredibly special about arriving, parking your car, and realizing you genuinely have no reason to touch the keys again for three days. The golf course, lodging, pool, bar and lounge, meals, and everything you need are right there. You wake up steps from the course, eat breakfast, play golf, come back for lunch, head out again, and eventually settle in for dinner, drinks, swimming, and whatever the evening turns into. Then you wake up and do it all over again. That simplicity is a huge part of the magic. The course itself is consistently in great condition and clearly cared for by people who take pride in it. But what separates Thunderhart from other golf destinations is that the hospitality and attention don't stop when you walk off the 18th green. The Stay & Play experience is exactly that--an experience. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are taken care of, the lodging is comfortable and incredibly convenient, the pool is there when you want to cool off after a round, and the bar and lounge naturally become gathering places when the golf is finished. Everything is close enough that a group our size can spend the weekend together without constantly coordinating cars, reservations, transportation, or logistics. That matters more than you might think. When you have 20-plus people coming together from different places, age groups, careers, families, and walks of life, removing all of those little logistical headaches creates room for something better: time together. And that is ultimately what Thunderhart provides us. Gerri and the entire staff have always treated our group with genuine warmth and hospitality. After enough years, you stop feeling like a group of customers who booked a golf package and start feeling like you're returning to a place that knows and welcomes your tradition. There is obvious care behind the property, the course, the food, the accommodations, and--most importantly--the way people are treated. I've admittedly been reluctant to write this review because part of me wants to selfishly gatekeep this little slice of heaven tucked away in Freehold. Places that still feel this personal, peaceful, unpretentious, and complete are getting harder to find. But something this good deserves recognition. If you're looking for a polished resort where you spend half your trip traveling between hotels, restaurants, golf courses, and activities, there are plenty of those. Thunderhart offers something different. Park the car. Put the phone down. Play golf. Eat well. Have a drink. Jump in the pool. Tell stories. Laugh too loudly. Wake up and do it again. For three days every year, the outside world gets a little quieter and our group gets a little closer. That's why we keep coming back. We had a 1222 tee time today, and as we always do we got there early, checked in and putted around a little. We went over to the tee box after we saw the 12:10 tee off and I said we are Farina. 12:22. So the starter said looks like the other two are not coming....So we go up to get ready and tee off and right at 12:21 he goes. "There's your other two-some" I told him I am not waiting I scheduled for 12:22 and I was a half hour early because golf etiquette you don't run up to the tee box AT the time. Anyways. 12:22 comes and the 2 kids still are not coming out of the clubhouse. The starter said "they are just paying" i said well, We are teeing off. He said "no hold please". I said. "What time is our tee time?" He said "12:22" It was 12:23 at this time still no one around.... So finally i said "Mike hit away" and he got all mad and said "I tell you when you can go" And then he said "someone is on the shit list" For what being there early??? I wanted to beat the rain and had dinner plans. It's not my fault you guys want to squeeze every possible person out there.... Come to find out. The kids only had one bag. We will never return as much as I love the course. (Since I'm on the shit list) No one ever treats me like that or punishes me for being on time....

And I can continue to quote much chapter and verse of this posthumous writing as the writing is near and dear to my heart - the gallantry shown at Fort Christina and more, the true founders of New York and I wish the good Peter Styversant were here today to drop a heap of learning about America on you who don't understand not just NY history, but America! Love it or be gone. Arriving at 5:45, I hadn't inquired as to what time the first tee ball hits the air, turns out it's about 8:00am. So I practiced my sneaky bump and runs, flips and flops and Texas toe downs. And player worth his salt has to know a multitude of great escape shots. So I lead the field being put out as a single with twins and fours amassing behind me and being 2 years removed from the short grass (due to injuries) I was a bit nervy on the 1st tee, nobody knew who I was, everyone else knew each other. Fortunately I ripped a low 3 iron cut stinger and I was off, still walking and carrying my bag, adding layers and subtracting layers as it was nippy in the mountains. I love the classic shallow and square bunkering design originally popular with architecture from the 20's and 30's. The greens rolled true but I couldn't buy a putt, not much break out there and putting off the second collar is doable. The fairways were in the shape to be expected for early season golf, what I should have done was pay closer attention to the unseen creeks that protected some greens and ran out along the sides. But I was the first player and I needed to set a good pace out there. Overall, the course played extremely fair, I can't give the staff enough credit for such fine service for me, attentiveness and extremely friendly.

Rip Van Winkle holds a special place in my heart…read more Not only is it the closest golf course to my parents' home and as such the place where I've golfed the most in the past decade (not saying much), but it's also the first place my brother, my father and I played after my father went through some very serious medical issues. We weren't entirely sure if he would ever be able to play golf again, so it was an amazing feeling to get out and hit a few balls with him last year. My father is doing much better now (physically at least, not that much better at golf), and so we try and get out whenever possible. This adds up to a couple times a year here when I'm in town, and accordingly, I am very, very bad at golf. Please believe that no one is mistaking Rip Van Winkle for something that belongs on the PGA Tour. When Greene County hasn't gotten enough rain, you may see a few brown spots out there. It's only nine holes, and generally pretty flat. However, it's an accessible, family-run place that I feel lucky to be able to play. It's affordable (kids play free too), and has my kind of casual vibe. I love that if I forgot to pack a collared shirt, they don't hassle me. My dad says the owner John is a great guy, and I like that his teenage son is often riding around tidying up the course. It's a true family biz. They do a good job too; the greens are well-maintained, the mountain backdrop is gorgeous, and you can't be sad about any day you spend trying to knock a little white ball around a beautiful grassy area. I suppose I can be sad about how poorly I do it, but I'm pretty happy here overall.
