We are in from out of town and were looking forward to a nightcap at old Tavern. Yelp indicated that it was open until 2 AM on Friday. The people working there were friendly, my drinks were top notch, and the place had a relaxed feel where you could sit and relax a bit. I was born and raised in Jackson and moved to Byram when I was almost 30. Today is the first time I've ever been to Old Tavern and I'm disappointed in myself that it's my first visit. Rustic little spot near the corner of West and George St. I always thought it was strictly a bar, which probably accounts for me never eating here before. Only one guy worked the dining room but he did a good job for the most part. I ordered the Old Tavern Burger with the house cut fries. I asked if they really were house cut and he told me they cut them when ordered. My food didn't take long to come out and everything was piping hot. When I saw the shine on that bun and felt how soft it was, I knew I was in for a treat. This was one of the best burgers I've tasted. The patty was fresh and well seasoned and not dry at all. The fries made me super happy, as they were not only fresh cut but seasoned as well. While I was eating, two guys from the kitchen came out to check on everyone to ensure everyone was enjoying their food. My first visit won't be my last! read more

Order a local IPA from the bartender and get a blonde ale because she doesn't know about the local beers but she will charge you $10 for a warm can of it. Took my wife out to dinner for our anniversary here and we had a really nice time. The place its self is nicely decorated, clean, and there's a nice dim vibe to the place (we went around 8pm). The service was good, we even had small conversation with our server who was really friendly and inviting. Now the food, it was delicious! Every single thing we had was freshly made. For appetizers we had the fritter which I highly recommend. My wife had the blackened catfish and I had the king George burger. The wait was a bit longer but the attention to the food is not something you find anywhere. They also gifted us a piece of dessert for our anniversary which was very sweet and appreciated. The tavern has a rustic feel. The lady who took my order was very kind. I ordered the fried catfish special. The fish was fried well, and the side salad was good and fresh. With the okra, hush puppies, and fries, it seemed as if they had been fried in old grease. The hush puppies were soaked in dark grease, making them inedible, similarly with the okra. The fries were okay, but the dark grease was on those as well. read more

In town for my son's freshman orientation. Stopped here for dinner, although a bit late, 9ish. This was a Thursday night. When we first walked in there were local musicians playing Irish jigs and it was a really cool atmosphere that matched the bars decore and vibe. Unfortunate one person tending bar and helping tables. Which was fine understanding the current climate. She did not know what beers they had besides standards like Budweiser. So we went up to the bar and picked out some which turned out to be delicious. But then the food. Ordered the green tomatoes napoleon, pimento cheese blt, and onion rings. BLT was good as well as onion rings. Fried green tomatoes came out without the crab meat and sauce. We were told the "chef" didn't know how to make it. And we're were only given $4 off of an $18 plate missing half of the ingredients. Then at about 9:45 the vibe changed. The Irish band left and the hip hop music began. It was so loud it rattled our table and the bar atmosphere and vibe did a complete 180 in 5 minutes. Then there was an upcharge for using credit. Went there for lunch while in town for a conference. They were short-staffed, but the food was excellent and the service was friendly and prompt, especially under the circumstances. The owner took time to tell us some stories about the place, with a bit of local history. I love the atmosphere...historic pub, exposed brick, etc. Try the pimento cheese BLT. Delish! I think every lightbulb in the joint was out too. Just the way I like it. Legit, that's how I like it. This place is, as the kids would text, "average af." 80% of the menu is burgers or sandwiches, if you want something else, go somewhere else. The staff, while likely in-tune with the needs and wants of locals and regulars, treats outsiders as a burden. If you want something y'all have to ask for it. Following the ask, you'll get a side eye, or a stink eye, and likely an exhale maybe even a mini horse whinny. After that, the server will acquiesce to you request. I ordered a burger, The Old Tavern Burger, medium. It came out well done. The bun was stale, and crumbly. The mushrooms, red peppers and pesto mayo were very good though. I chose sweet potato fries as my side: pretty, pretty, pretty good. The mustard that came w/ my order was also very good, in small doses. Went and saw my girl Brittany today for a delicious Philly cheese steak sandwich on Gambino's french bread! It was awesome!! Fries were great as always. Put it alongside some sweet potato fries, and its a winner. The specials are good, especialy when they offer the crab melt, and the onion rings are excellent! For dessert, try the fudge brownie and you won't be disappointed. Lastly, the service is always friendly. Negatives would be that the place somehow smells of smoke, so I don't often sit in there. There's also no wi-fi. Also, if you go at noon, be prepared for service that isn't as fast as you'd like. If your break is only an hour, go at 11:30, or later at 1. We had a mini lunch outing today, and it was a great time as always. We had a coworker of Britney's join us, but I'm terrible with names, so please tag her Britney Marshall. Shana Alexandra Nelson joined us as well but it wouldn't let me add her as a tag. ‍ Vickie Craft Hood ordered pimento and cheese fritters for appetizer. So after we all sampled this most delicious treat, there was two more orders headed to our table. I'm picky about my pimento and cheese and this was a home run! Even picky Brit was impressed. I was struggling to make an entree selection because the choices are so difficult to make for someone starving and indecisive. I'm spoiled by Jefferson's Grill Restaurant & Catering philly steak and cheese to the point I'm hesitant to order it anywhere else because my expectations are set high. But, reluctantly, I went with it anyway. Oh man oh man, this was the PERFECT philly. Gambino bread, lots of cheese, lots of meat, red bell pepper, onions, and mushrooms. The meat was juicy, that bread was perfect for soaking up the juices. You get a choice of home fries or seasoned fries. I selected the seasoned fries. They are thin, crispy, and fried to perfection. I could tell they were fried in brand new grease, as the fries didn't have any off flavors that usually are accompanied with oil that has had many things fried in it. This is a classic pub and restaurant, steps from the Capitol. I have been here many times, mainly for lunch but also for happy hour, and I have always left satisfied. The service is very good, and the food is large portioned comfort food that hits home! My group often likes to eat the chicken salad, the french dip, the burgers, and the plate of the day (an ever changing blue plate special). My personal favorite is the Pimento Cheese BLT...wow, it is an experience. Real homemade pimento cheese on a BLT? Yum! When they have gumbo or something special that they have created for that day, just try it! They know how to make good food, with large portions! They have some interesting beers on tap and a full bar, so you can count on some great mictrobrews in a frosty glass for happy hour! You can eat at the bar (full menu), and at night, they have dancing and music upstairs. Lunch can fill up quickly, and this is a bit of a smaller restaurant, so if you try to get a table later than noon you might have to wait! Parking can also fill up, as this is right next to all the State buildings. Check out some of their historical pictures...they have some interesting, historical items in this restaurant. Probably was my favorite place to hang out in Jackson. Close to Hotels downtown - I would go here for Karaoke night and Ladies night - both a BLAST! Ladies night is quite a deal for the ladies they drink nearly free! Karaoke was so much fun - a lot of talent and some not so much but was always a great time. However, I was not impressed with their food - There was nothing wrong with it but nothing exciting about it either - basic bar food. This is the place where local 50 year olds go to smoke stale cigarettes. The bartender was very nice, but she had an unusual technique for tapping a Guinness. Normally you just dump it in and let the foam rise "proud of the rim," but she let it settle, then topped it off. The kitchen closes early, but she gave us a recommendation for another bar nearby that serves food all night. The beer selection was pretty weak. No craft IPAs here. We arrived from our hotel via Uber--good decision. We then decided to walk to the next bar--bad decision. This bar is in a rough location. Think of Hill Valley in "Back to the Future Part II." Don't walk unless you're carrying. On the way back from the next bar (Uber this time, thank God), we passed a large crowd in the street by the train station around what we later learned was a double shooting. While I've been to Ole Tavern several times before, today was one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had in my life. At it's best, Ole Tavern is mediocre. Today was horrible. We asked for sweet tea twice and got unsweet. Then asked for a Dr. Pepper and it was flat. It took 30 minutes to get a House Salad and a bowl of gumbo. They brought the wrong salad dressing and the gumbo was cold. Then it took another 15 minutes to get the check. All N of this in a place that was half full. I was in Jackson one night for a wedding. After the reception winded down, everyone headed out to Ole Tavern for some late night drinks. The atmosphere was really fun. They had good beers on draft, a live band and people were dancing. I had a great time. However, what sets this place apart are the employees there and the Manager. I (stupidly) left my credit card and wallet in the bar that night. Not realizing until Sunday morning, (when the bar was closed) I was forced to leave Jackson without it and drive back to Texas. On Monday, I get a call from one of the employees who found the wallet on the ground. Over the next week I talked to several people who worked there over the phone, and eventually the wallet made its way to the manager. She was incredibly kind and mailed my wallet back to me. (This was over Christmas mind you). I even offered for her to take some of the cash as a reward/to pay for the shipping cost. She refused. This is probably the kindest act I've ever received from a stranger. As a bar, I would say this place is really good. But if you plan of leaving something valuable 2 states over, this is the place. read more

The name of this business is "Ole Tavern on George Street". In it's many incarnations over the years this has always been a very warm inviting pub style vibe. It's a great venue to see bands & have respectable bar food. The King George burger (may not be on the current menu, but ask if you don't see it) is an impressive 1/2 pound burger with bacon, 3 cheeses, a fried egg & Jalapenos on a sweet Jalapeno Bun. It's a very tasty burger, easily in the metro areas top 15 burgers. It's fried rather than flame grilled but tasty. The shoestring seasoned french fries are are abundant & awesome. The bartender I have had here now for three visits is one of the few in the Jackson metro that seems to be able to properly pour a pint of Guinness. Huge 2 floored bar with a patio that I could see being busy during the summer. Upstairs had a stage for bands and a set of stairs that is seriously scary after a few pints and in the dark trying to run to the ATM to get more cash. Had a shrimp po boy here and it was fine for pub food; nothing too memorable but nothing that made me regret eating it either. I vaguely remember about 8 taps last visit which includes Guinness and a couple of the Lazy Magnolia brews. Trivia on Mondays and Ladies Night is Thursday. Seems to be populated by a good mix of business, locals, college students, and out of towners, now if only more showed up during the weeknights. Bonus: Ty, the aforementioned bartender, will leave Fox Soccer Channel on for the soccer fans. read more

So this place is just across the street from the capital and the Department of Medicaid so most lunch times it's fairly busy. The place is old and very dark with old wooden furniture placed very close together. Can't tell if it's clean or dirty because it's so dark. As soon as you walk-in to the place you are greeted by the waitresses and offered a seat. The menu is typical Tavern food and they have daily specials. I have tried almost everything on the menu and pretty much everything is really delicious. One of my favorite specials is the seafood gumbo. My favorite go to lunch is tomato soup and grilled cheese. Overall this place is a pretty good place to meet coworkers and friends for a quick tasty lunch! read more
