We were so excited to pull up to this restaurant. The front of the building was decorated with the…read moreimages of the original owners which made it look so interesting. Stepping inside felt like a step back in time to about the "60's or 70's. So much of the original decor is included in the design of the restaurant including the old ice boxes and tin ceiling. The staff was very friendly, although our waiter seemed to have another task he was trying to finish so we didn't get much attention. We went for breakfast and ordered nothing special- straight off the menu. It took almost 45 minutes to get our food and the restaurant was not busy at all. That is what made the experience frustrating. Fortunately the food was really good. The sausage is homemade and delicious. The hash browns and eggs were cooked perfectly. They only take cash or checks so be prepared.

We came early on a Saturday morning for breakfast. Interesting facts: If you order eggs, bacon,…read moretoast, hash browns they all may arrive in a 5-minute window on separate plates. Between all the plates and saucers for coffee cups and creamer there was barely any room left on our table. Another tidbit: If you're under 50, you may very well be the youngest customer in the place. Great for those wanting to feel young again. The whole BUILDING was old and extremely dated, but appeared to be clean. Food was fine, nothing notable in my opinion but it did the job. The sausage appeared to be homemade, which is unusual. Pancakes were mediocre. Hash browns crispy on the outside. The servers seemed to enjoy sitting at the dining counter socializing, looking at their phones while not working- but they were friendly and I didn't think service was slow like others have written.

Last Friday was a date night for me and Gayle, as we opted to try for kick ass meal out here at the Hi-Lo Club just outside Lakefield. The restaurant and bar was about a 30 minute drive from the family cabin on the East Shore of Spirit Lake (Orleans) and with a lot less traffic that any fine dining choice almost as far on West Lake Okoboji. Our only regret was that we opted not to go downstairs to the Speakeasy after dinner, where live music was in full swing. The only irritation (if that) was a fairly loud bride and friends dinner a couple tables over. But I quibble as Gayle and I thoroughly enjoyed our romantic evening together within our cozy booth. Here's what we ordered: - Bombay Sapphire Martini (Up/Olives) and then a Malbec (Gayle). - Mocktail (Cranberry Pom Spritz) and then a Sauvignon Blanc (Eric) - Filet Beef Tenderloin with Asparagus and Caesar Salad (Gayle) - Canadian Walleye with Caesar Salad and Wild Rice Pilaf. - Coffee (Eric) and a shared piece of Champagne Cake (See Picture). Our Caesar Salads and Gayle's steak were outstanding. My Walley was excellent, but I wanted more of what Gayle was enjoying. The cake was of course icing on our evening. Total tab? About $160 with tax and tip. Special kudos to our great (and very busy) waitress and the Prohibition-era atmosphere. We only visit the Iowa Great Lakes once in the Summer, so look for us to be back here next year.

The host originally seated us in a space that did not fit our party. Then he moved us to a center spot in a long, family-style table with people on either side of us. We had a five year old with us who was overly tired and very spunky and we had to try to keep her focused on us and not our neighboring patrons. Was really not the most appropriate seating for children but we didn't want to ask for yet another table. Soon after we sat down, we discovered that the parties on both sides of us were upset and looking for any employee so they could express their frustration. Seeing as we were all so close, we could hear them complain to others in their parties about the service. We learned shortly that we should have written up our losses early and moved on. We didn't. We ordered our beverages and immediately got water. The rest (2 soft drinks, an iced tea, and a milk) slowly trickled out one by one. The waiter apologized every single time he came to the table about how slow everything was from us being seated to getting our drinks to him coming to take our order. Once the food came out, he was apologizing again for how long that took. He wasn't wrong. As for the food, it was fine. Portions were average to smallish for the price. It wasn't as special as we had hoped it would be based on the descriptions. We each got something different and all said that we wouldn't order that item again. Not that it was bad. It just wasn't good. The best thing we had was the pretzel stick appetizer. That was pretty good but for the price, we wouldn't order it again. Nothing was super memorable except the decor which was super fun to look at. Oh and the very apologetic waiter. Our food came out hot. Turns out that was not true for the table to our left. The table to our right got the wrong food so half their group was done while the others were just starting. Apparently one of the cooks had called in. So, over all, I gave them an optimistic 3 stars. It was like a participation award with the assumption that if they were firing on all cylinders, it could have been much better. Personally, i wouldn't try them again but as the only Irish pub in the area, it could be a neat happy hour hang out. It just was not a family lunch spot.
