The service was terrible - some of the worst service I've ever experienced dining out. Our waiter was beyond short with us to the point where you would've thought we personally offended him. When asked for recommendations he quickly rattled off 5 or 6 items while walking away from us. Later, when asked for the dessert menu he once again rattled off the options while walking away so quickly you could hardly comprehend what he said. It was all a very bizarre encounter and gave you the sense that he couldn't be bothered. Frankly it made my party feel uncomfortable - hence the two star rating. Everything about this place was refreshing. After three days of eating chips and guacamole (exciting/delicious at first) and mediocre tacos, my husband and I were desperate for something different and memorable for our last night on the island. We happened across Olivia and couldn't have been happier! The ambience was romantic and more upscale than the places we had been stopping off for dinner in town. The backyard was beautiful! The service was attentive and delightful. We ordered hummus and pita to start, and we knew we were in for a treat when that came. The hummus was delicious and the pita warm and appeared homemade. I had the moussaka, which was heavenly. My husband got the chicken shawarma (huge portion) and it was fresh and tasty, complete with homemade hot sauce on the side. Terrible customer service!!! The food was good but the service was WORST!!! They wanted you to hurry up and order, once you ordered they wanted you to order more (an entree or special) or leave. They kept pushing their "special" 4 lamb chops but you order them you only get two. When you complain, you are an idiot, and THEY don't want you to come back. I've never been so insulted at a restaurant. They actually don't care if you come back because they know you are tourist. I am warning all tourists to stop going there now. Make a reservation now, I had the best meal of my entire life here. Atmosphere wise, I couldn't have asked for more. We sat in the garden which made it even more desirable. Candle lit tables and a cozy feeling made this dinner a great last night dining experience for our trip. The staff was EXTREMELY willing to help. I have severe food allergies and they made sure the cook knew and told me what dishes I should shy away from and which ones were able to be modified for my needs. All the servers asked us at least once if we were doing okay and the owner is such a lovely human being. He emailed me after I made my online reservation to confirm with me and if I emailed him back with any questions he was quick and thorough with his response. Food wise, I would dine here every day if I could. Started off with the parmesan bread and I wanted 40 more. So delicious and I'm sure it was baked to order. The main courses were to die for and I ate until I was uncomfortable because I felt bad leaving any behind. I could also sit here all night and drink their phenomenal mojitos. Pita is fresh, ingredients are high quality, and its cooked with heart. If you don't visit here at least once.... You've made a mistake. read more

Olivia has two seatings 6:30 and 8:30. Reservations a must. They will take walk-ins at 6:45 or 8:45 for any no-show tables. Beautiful atmosphere. The outdoor garden is lovely and candlelit. I asked for a chicken skewer in my salad. One was not enough so be sure to ask for more than one. It was tasty but I wanted more. The moussaka was very good with bechamel sauce and seasoned meat. Beef kebabs and meat stuffed potato were both solid. The oddity of the night was inedible baklava. Flat and dense like a breakfast bar. It went untouched. The atmosphere while dining on the patio at Olivia is divine! The space is intimate- with small dining areas that make you feel like you are in separate rooms. The patio is lit by candles and outdoor rope lights. While mostly covered by fawna you can still catch glimpses of the stars through the branches. The food matched the ambiance in both style and taste. This is some of the best Mediterranean food I have had in my life. It was delicious! The made fresh pita and parmesan bread loaf were an extra special treat served with the appetizer platter. Since we were dining as a large group, we ordered the majority of the entrees on the menu, and I think we would recommend them all. The only downside to my personal experience (not sure that the rest of the group would feel the same), was the service. They were prompt and accurate, but casually condescending. Quickly rattling off the wine menu with little enthusiasm and lots of short hand references gave an air of it all not really being worth his time. Throughout the meal I felt more of the same. I felt like we had been sized up, and deemed to be worth a 60% effort. Had we experienced better service, I would give Olivia 5 stars hands down. Great food tonight. The smells, food, music and service was wonderful. Olivia's is open only at night and it was worth walking by. The smells lured us in. Wonderful place with great food. Our waitress was so friendly which made it a blast. Highly recommend the food. However before we left a blonde guy with a ponytail, an American, was making derogatory remarks about Texas who was obviously a redneck guy. That left a bad taste in our mouth. So we had quite the dilemma while in Isla Mujeres: too many restaurants, too little time. We decided to just come here for apps one night and head elsewhere for dinner but I wish we stayed for the whole meal. The backyard is adorable, albeit buggy, and we went right as it opened but it seemed to get filled quick. The waiter was from boston which was cool and the apps were great. What an incredible place. I had read about this place.... Isralei food in Mexico? I am so unbelievably glad we were able to try Oliva's. My husband and I walked by our first night(of only two) in Isla Mujeres. The place was packed and I was told there were no open reservations for the rest of the night. I asked to make reservations for the following night but they would be closed. I must have shown the disappointment on my face well because the owner (I believe) told me to wait outside and he would see what he could do. I anticipated even just a stool at the bar, which would have been so accommodating. But he came back and sat us at a table!! SO GRATEFUL. The food was unbelievable. Hubs had the Moussaka (seriously craving it right now) and I had the short ribs. One of the best meals I've ever had I would have to say. No question we will be back next time we're in Isla. I even contemplated having my 30th birthday dinner there with friends. Yes, it's that good. Make sure you make a reservation. read more

Very cute atmosphere, food was fresh, tasty and very authentic. We ordered the chicken kabob and a salad with cucumbers, feta, tomatoes and red onions. Hummus is a must as well as the tahini. We did not make a reservation and was lucky to get a table. I would suggest making a reservation if you want to sit in the back part. Lastly, mojito was very good--note they only have one red wine by the glass the rest are by the bottle. Will definitely return when I come back. read more

I went to Olivia with great expectations to leave disappointed about certain things. Got a Mojito that couldn't be worse, the mint was almost invisible with very bad rum quality . Salad was just fine. My main course was lamb chops with couscous. The meat was acceptable but the couscous inedible, cooked just with water with no flavor whatsoever when couscous is a type of grain that you can use a variety of spices, nuts and dried fruits to give it a kick . When my check came, they overcharged me 60MSN for the lamb that a friend paid 400 MSN 2 days before. To add insult to injury, 1 US = 18.92 that day but the restaurant has its own exchange of 1US = 14 MSN. What? I don't really know if it is legal or not but, I will find out. I don't mind paying whatever for an amazing meal but I hate to feel cheated moreover when the meal is nothing to rave about plus not even good drinks. Oh! The check comes with a lollipop, for Christ sake! What about a mini baklava? I don't really understand the parameters people use when they rate restaurants , it seems to me they have never been in a high end one where everything is perfect from beginning to end. I have not found one restaurant with good food yet. Everything is pretty mediocre up to now in Isla Mujeres. read more

Be sure you make a reservation, even in the off-season. And bring cash. We stop in at least once every time we're on the island. Portions are fairly small, but the ingredients are top notch and well prepared. We've never had a disappointing meal here. The Moussaka is a personal favorite. read more

One of the nicest places on the island. If you're in Mexico for Mexican food, you can skip this one, but you'll never know what you've missed. Great Mediterranean food, great service and friendly staff. Very reasonable prices, but on Isla there is hardly anything that seems expensive to most American tourists. Beautiful backyard dining area, very romantic, quiet, away from the street. Unlike most other places, reservations are recommended as they tend to be pretty busy.
