And they are both very pleasant people. Dinner can be eaten on the patio overlooking the water. Felipe's Grouper Omah(his mother's recipe) is delicious, as are the coconut shrimp (huge, best on the island) and various other things on the menu. Margarete's chocolate cake is divine. Good wines. The Sunset Grill is absolutely worth a visit! While sunset views from the patio are somewhat limited, there's a lovely pier you can stroll down for stunning views. I believe they offer seating right on the sand during the busy season--I'd recommend reaching out to the restaurant to confirm. That said, they were happy to rearrange a couple of tables for us to give us a better view, which was so thoughtful! Felipe and Margarita were incredibly warm and welcoming, and the fact that they speak English was a huge plus for me since my Spanish is limited. The Spanish Sangria was refreshing and a delightful change from what I'm used to--highly recommend it! We started with the Mixed Ceviche (Fish & Shrimp), which featured fresh pear slices--a pleasant surprise that took it to the next level. I almost didn't want to share it! The guys had the Beef Tenderloin, served with a to-die-for mushroom gravy and cooked to perfection. The Brisket was a surprising standout--possibly the best I've ever had! Both dishes came with fresh veggies and mashed potatoes, all expertly prepared. We ended the evening with their homemade Banana Cake and an Ice Cream Boat--the perfect sweet finish to a fantastic meal. Reasonably priced and such a wonderful experience. We arrived here by accident, and it turned out to be our good fortune. Sunset Grill, like so many restaurants on the island, sits within feet of the clear blue water. In fact, this place has seating on the sand, if you choose, and a pier for those Kodak moments. We chose to sit at a table inside, just beyond the white sand. Though the skies had already darkened, the landscaping and lighting here still made me feel like I was on the set of 'Fantasy Island,' a cheesy (but oh so cool) drama that ran between the late 70s and mid-80s. Though there were no white-suit-sporting 'Mr. Roarke' or 'Tattoo,' our service was spot on. (She was either the owner or manager.) We were pretty much left to enjoy each other's company and the view until just the time we wanted something. Nice. The food here is not your typical island fare. Sure, they use local seafood in the most creative of ways, but not all of it is 'Mexican' in the true sense. It's eclectic and fun. Adventurous. Delicious. Everything seemed to have been prepared precisely and with loving hands. And the presentation was obviously well-rehearsed. (See my photos.) Sunset Grill is not an every-night joint while you're here, because sometimes you just need to eat greasy tacos at an alley dive. But the food here is delicious. The service impeccable. Ok first I would like to start by saying that we at here a few days before our our 10th anniversary and it was our second time eating here. Once last year and then a few days before the anniversary. Last year the dinner was one of the best dinners we had during that vacation. The fish oma is incredible. We liked it so much that we went back to try again. It was just as remembered. Quite clean friendly and GREAT FOOD!!! This time we had the Mexican style prawns. There were perfect. The shrimp was fresh and the sauce was amazing. We enjoyed it so much this time that we booked a sunset cruise with the owner and a nice romantic dinner afterwards. He was very attentive to what I was looking for and even offered a saxophonist to come play for us. It was a great night. Dinner that night was fish oma again and lobster thermador. Sunset Grill was one of our best dinners that we had in Isla Mujeres. Upon arriving we were greeted and sat at a table with a great view of the water and the sunset. Sunset that night was so beautiful! For dinner we had the Blackened Fish Filet with mashed potatoes and a small salad and the Isla Paella loaded with fresh seafood over saffron rice. Excellent all the way. We also had a few margaritas here that were some of the best on the island. Service was great too. Our server was the one that greeted us upon entering and took care of us until it was time for us to leave. read more

Unfortunately, we felt inclined to cancel our Sunset Dinner Cruise for 2. We were quoted a price when we reserved and 3 days before the cruise, the owner checked in with me to finalize details. I asked him to give me a rundown of what's included and the price. He asked where I was staying. Not sure why that matters, but to my surprise, the price was raised after I gave him my answer. I then showed him a screenshot from his social media page that I've been following and only 2 days earlier the price was what we were quoted in July. An honest and respectable business owner would not try to scam me for more money, knowing that my trip was booked in advance and well before any "price changes" that happened 2 days earlier. I then go back to look at the page again and all the posts with the original price were updated to reflect the new price. I also noticed that he quotes based on people's budgets. If you tell him your budget, he will charge you close to the max for the same service that everyone else gets. This is the kind of stuff that tourists are warned about. read more

We found this hidden gem on Yelp our last night in Isla and I wish we would've found it earlier. This is a must visit restaurant every time we come to the island. Make sure to go just as the sun is setting and take pictures out on the deck, it is magical! The service and quality of food was impeccable. The owners were lovely people and answered our every question. You must try both the lobster and the shrimp quesadilla, it is MELT in your mouth goodness!! Everyone's dish at the table was fantastic. The hubs got the OMA fish with a dill sauce that was slow clap worthy. My tenderloin was cooked to perfection and the mashed taters that accompanied it were spot on. There is such a thing as over attentive service. We came on a Saturday night based on the high reviews and left with literally a bad taste in our mouths. Let's start with the food... Warm bread was a wonderful touch. As soon as we touched the bread however, our entrees landed on the table. Huh? It takes 5mins to make paella? I found out the reason it was so fast- the food tasted like it was hastily thrown together, pre-prepared, and warmed up in the oven. This was most apparent in my bf's dish. His fish was SO DRY he could barely get it down his throat. I even finished his last bite because I felt so bad for him. The service...hmmm how would I describe it? Weird and creepy. Considering we were the ONLY customers at this restaurant, everyone working at the restaurant came around several times to check on us. It got annoying in fact as we couldn't really have a conversation without someone interrupting us. Our convo ended up being about the weirdness of this restaurant and how bad the food tasted. The waiter seemed desperate for us to stay and continue ordering more food. After we both turned down dessert twice (we just wanted to leave), he chided, "let me just show you the menu!" Weird. Location...it was so far and isolated the owner had to call a cab for us. You literally could not hail a cab on the street it was so deserted. It cost about 50 pesos each way to and from our hotel. Unfortunate evening but oh well, sometimes it's hit or miss with Yelp when you travel outside big foodie cities like SF or NYC. read more

This kills my soul. We went to this restaurant several years ago and had an amazing meal. This time not so much. The Greek salad was only ok. I thought it was bland and heavy on the cukes but hubby loved it. The lobster bisque was good not great. Too little lobster meat. My hubby had the hog snapper a fish he loves. It was weird. They insisted on frying it. We asked for grilled or pan seared but got the odd answer that the fish was to small for that. So he ended up with a largely inedible fish was was cold and bone dry. And very hard. It was as if the fish had been fried yesterday and then refried. It was awful. The key lime pie was some frozen wretchedness that I found inedible. Add a bottle of house wine and one drink and it was $115US. The worst meal we had in Isla. And pricey! read more

DINNER REVIEW 4 for the appetizers, 2 for the entrees, averages out to a 3 We came to Sunset grill for the night of Christmas as we wanted something more upscale. It's a little bit of a hike from where we were staying but it's on the water which is always nice. It's clearly family-run as the husband and wife are there taking your order and asking if you need anything. The appetizers were delicious...I had the lobster quesadilla which came with a delicious chipotle sauce. I would definitely order that again. For our entree, my sister and I shared the grilled flank steak special and the seafood parade. Unfortunately, the steak was over cooked and dry, the beans that came with it were dry, and the guacamole was nothing special. They garnished the plate with paprika to try and make it look fancy but it really didn't serve a purpose which I didn't appreciate. The seafood parade was good but not great. Not the kind of seafood to write home about. For an upscale restaurant like this, I was hoping for more precision in how things were cooked. I don't think I'll be coming back but I wish them good luck! read more

Our Airbnb host recommended this restaurant and we are so glad we dined here. We had the Oma Fish, which my boyfriend loves. The sauce served on top of the fish and potatoes was creamy and delicious. I had the lobster, which was very meaty and a great size for me. My meal was served with a salad that was very simple but had a great taste. The owners are very sweet and answered all our questions about the island, their restaurant, and recipes. She showed us around the restaurant and told us about their wedding packages and boat rides. Our absolute favorite place to eat on the island!! My wife and I eat here numerous times every time we visit the island! We've tried most of what is on their menu, and everything has been fabulous. We always recommend it to other travelers, and they always thank us and rave about how good it is. Felipe and Margarita are 2 of our favorite people on the island. They always make us feel right at home. We always go sailing with Felipe as well, and it is very enjoyable. We 100% recommend the food, drinks, and the sunset cruise on the yacht. One of our 2 favorite restaurants on Isla. We were last there Oct 2016 and everything was awesome. In fact, it was so great, we went back two more times during our trip and loved everything we tried. The owners were very nice and we really enjoyed chatting with them. We didn't realize that they actually had rooms for rent above the restaurant. The owner told us about them, and after dinner let us go up and look at them. So, my wife and I are headed back to Isla in July, and we booked our room at the Sunset. No doubt we'll be eating there several times anyway, and their rooms are very nice. We are really looking forward to it. I noticed someone posted about the attentive service and thought it was "weird"???? What an odd thing to say. Yes, they are attentive. I like that. I also like that the owners come over and greet and talk with you. They make you feel welcome and I think that is a nice touch. I'll take overly attentive any day versus non-existent service. But I enjoy socializing while on vacation. All in all, the food was great, the service was great, the owners were great, and the mixed drinks were great. I don't have a single bad thing to say about this place. I noticed someone also complained that it was slow getting their orders. I'll admit that the serve time isn't blazingly fast, but that's not what this restaurant is supposed to be. If you want quick drive-through type food, go somewhere else. This restaurant is about sitting down, relaxing, enjoying the atmosphere, sipping on a well made drink, and having a great meal. That's what we expected from it, and that's exactly what we got. Overall, we were there about an hour to an hour and a half, and we enjoyed every minute (hence the reason we went back 2 more times). Can't wait to go again!!!!! read more

This was a random spot that we found while on vacation. Was the cleanest looking as well! When we went in we were seated and given menus the waitress and the owners wife were very nice! The food was delicious and the drinks were great! Cute little back area by the water with a dock as well. The owner came out to ensure we enjoyed our meal and everyone was very grateful for our business. The Sunset Grill is an excellent restaurant that focuses on quality over quantity. We decided to try dinner at the Sunset Grill because of the elegant and inviting setting of the building as we drove by. We were not disappointed by the gourmet offerings and friendly owners who have an eye for detail. Their fish selections were all delicious and they had a child's size pasta dish for our three-year-old. During dinner we learned that the owner Phillipe operates a sunset cruise on his sailboat. Do yourself a favor and pop for this offering, the cost was about $400 US but includes a 2 1/2 hour sail for four people and our little boy. They served prawns, chicken skewers, guacamole,ceviche, and two bottles of wine as well as bottled water and soda. We had a great time and will definitely visit on our return trips to Isla mujures! read more

The owners also work with the Red Cross and have taken over as director turning a almost non existent budget into a organization that's able to do something for people here on the island. But the place is inviting, has a nice setting and offers something different than what you get everyday here. They/he surprised me with a table on the beach with flowers & a saxophone serenade. What a sweetheart to say the least! The meal was delicious; the service was perfect; the staff was very accommodating; the weather, of course was amazing, the sun set was literally divine - it was truly one of the best dinner experiences I've ever had in my life! Honestly, I would have loved to dine there every night we stayed in Isla but we had already made plans for other venues. I definitely want to go back to Sunset Grill. Had a really lovely dinner at Sunset Grill. We went in time for sunset and sat up at the edge of the patio closest to the water. The service was gracious and welcoming. The menu was lovely. We had ceviche that was fresh and light, awards portion,served with tortilla chips, and the grilled Greek island fish which was snapper today. It was served with a wild and white rice, and salad with a good homemade dressing. The sauce on the fish was a gentle garlic sauce accompanied by fried capers. The drinks were good, well-made, came quickly. They have a lovely Weimers with a variety of varietals by the glass. The reason I'm only giving it four stars is because we were attacked by mosquitoes at dusk. The restaurant was prepared for it; and came around and sprayed our ankles under the table with repellant, and then wheeled in a mechanical mosquito fogger. But all the smells really made it hard to enjoy the food and drink. Despite the accommodations for the mosquitoes, my legs and arms were quite bitten . To avoid this, one could be seated closer inside the restaurant directly under a ceiling fan. read more
