Our daughters had a fantastic time swinging, exploring the playground (though it's for toddlers up to age five), and letting their imaginations run wild as they played pretend kitchen with natural elements. They enjoyed feeding the chickens and petting the goats. The holiday open farm day was a delightful experience, featuring delicious hot cocoa, soothing live music with singing and guitar, and a creative ornament-making station stocked with paint, stickers, tape, and bells. We wrapped up our day with a $10 basket brimming with freshly picked vegetables--eggplant, vibrant carrots, fragrant cilantro, fresh basil, and a variety of kale. Finally had the opportunity to visit this great little spot. It is very easy to find and parking is plentiful. Cute little check in stand as soon as you drive up on the right hand side. They have porta potties that they decorated with wood panels to cover up the ugly blue which I thought was such a good idea. They are very clean! There is also a cute little sink outside with running water and soap. Nice open area with benches and shade. We brought food and snacks and had a little picnic on the benches. Lots of sinks everywhere to keep your hands clean. They also have a water dispenser to fill up water bottles. My kids loved the slides and walking around the farm checking out the produce. We didn't buy any but might next time. It was $4 for 1 very small papaya. They also liked holding the chickens. You can do a you pick basket based on size. Depending on what is available you can pick and wash your own produce. I did not partake in this because the fruit was not included. Admission is pricey at $10-$12 a person. It was $48 for myself and 3 kids. Not something we can afford on the regular. I don't understand why adults have to pay. For the price of admission I feel like we should at least be able to get a small basket of produce for $48. It is pretty well maintained but I did notice exposed nails on the wooden gate for the goats. This could cut someone very soon. I wouldn't say that the staff is the friendliest. I would say that maybe they were annoyed that people were there. There should be a little more directions posted or more volunteers in the front. A few people ahead of us needed a little more help and you could tell she was irritated. The young worker in the chicken coop was so very nice. She was friendly and kind to all the kids. ***you must buy your tickets in advance online. There is also a processing fee as well. They do not allow walk ups. I over heard the lady at check in say if you come 5 times you get a basket of produce for free. She did not tell me this or offer me a stamp card of my own. Not sure why she didn't tell me or the people in front of me but choose to tell other people. It is a fun little day time excursion to do with kids under age 5. We will be back again one day. The natural themed outdoor play space has a fun climbing apparatus, a slide, a cool wooden ship, and mud kitchens for imaginary and sensory play. My son and my best friend's son has such a great time here. They loved the trucks in the dirt and played in there for over half an hour. The animals are very docile and are accustomed to people. Before my first trip there I was wondering if I can bring a stroller. And the answer is yes! There is a paved road separating the garden and the play area so you can walk up that to get to where you need to. The activities are right off of it so you won't need to use it far either. I can't remember where I first heard about Keiki & Plow, but my sister visited with her kids a few months ago and came back with the most beautiful pack of eggs. It was one of the most fun things they did on vacation. I was excited about getting to go, myself, and now that my daughter is old enough to not put sand in her mouth, it was worth a shot. I went with a small group of other moms with toddlers. Before I went, I checked the website. It's very informative, with accurate times (Tuesday & Friday 9-11am) and cost ($5 per family). I can't wait to go back. My daughter spent the full two hours having a great time at the play area. They have it set up in stations - - goat pen, chicken pen, sand pit, water play, slide, etc. It's a small area, but there's so much to do in each station, that some kids could probably spend the entire morning at just one or two. On the Tuesday that we went, there were dozens of other kids, but it didn't feel crowded. My wife brings our child here regularly and I recently had the opportunity to join them for a morning at this wonderful local farm and play area. The first thing I noticed was the sense of calm that came over me. The layout, the shaded play area, chickens, goats, and the happiness of the staff creates a free and welcoming environment for children to play and learn at their own pace and interest. Kids have free run of the place with very few, if any, formal rules. It gives children the opportunity to run free for a bit of time in an outdoor environment that feels like you're integrated with the outdoors. What I mean is, many parks are just an industrial structure in the middle of a flat piece of land with little cover. It isn't until you see how expertly planned and executed Keiki and Plow is that you see what a play area can and should be. As an added bonus, the farm gains a bit of elevation over Hawaii Kai offering pretty great views of the area from the play area. Of course, there are two features of Keiki and Plow, the play areas, and the pick-your-own farm. We've picked up some lettuce, basil, and arugula here, and, man, I've never had anything like it. The basil was so fragrant and full of flavor it almost had a mint-like aroma to it. I brought it home and immediately made the best pesto I've ever had in my life. You've also not likely ever had arugula like theirs. Take the bitter, peppery flavors from store-bought arugula and multiply it by 10 more -- super intense! Such a cool opportunity to have the freshest greens possible. This is the perfect place for the 4 and under crowd. I used to bring my twins here all the time when they were preschool aged. They loved getting dirty and digging with all the tools. Yesterday A bunch of us preschool teachers had the pleasure to visit Keiki & Plow through the Michael Bennett Foundation through their program called Farm to ECE. Keiki and Plow is a Non Profit Organization that is fairly new. I never knew this farm was located right behind Kaiser High School! In fact there is a bunch of farms located behind the school. As you drive up to their property, there is a dirt/grassy area on the left hand side. There is also a porta potty located in that area (only bathroom on the premise i believe). Because we were there for a field trip, the owner took us on a tour that she would normally take preschoolers or older kids on. She had us all stand in a circle and sing songs to get us excited to learn about plants and bugs. Next we went on a tour, the herb garden is located right above the little parking area. They have a lot of herbs growing!!(cilantro, mint, basil, etc). She then took us to the sugar cane maze! How amazing is that?! The children are able to run through the sugar cane maze. She also gave us a little history on Koko head and diamond head. We then was able to see a machine that sucks the sugar cane juice out from the stick. How cool is that?! The juice sounds really yummy to drink. Next this we came to was a chicken coop.. lots of chickens in there, also had a goat and bunnies. In this little area on their property they have toys for children to play with. A little kitchen, swings, a boat and even a slide!! Yes a slide, and yes us big kids went down the slide! Come and visit Keiki & Plow, you will not be disappointed. Bring your children here to harvest fruits and vegetables that you are able to purchase and take home! Took my kids here today & LOVED it! My son played in the kid zone most of the time. I wish I would've taken him to pick veggies first! He didn't want to do anything else once he got to the sand box area with all the construction toys. There's a chicken pen where you can take the kids to see the chickens and look for eggs. Today I was lucky enough to come to Keiki and plow through my employer for free. Entry cost is $5.00 donation per family Hours of operation is Tuesday and Friday mornings 9am to 11am only. Keiki and plow is a non profit organization and fairly new. It's small farm with self pick veggies and eggs in Hawaii Kai with Koko Head in the background. We came on a beautiful hot sunny day! The sky was bright and no dark clouds in sight. You're able to self pick and the baskets cost by size $10/$20/$40 and eggs are $10/dozen egg They have lots of parking in front in a dirt/grassy area. When you walk in, you'll notice from self pick herbs and vegetables to your left. They also have other plants such as sugar cane with a small sugar cane mill on sight. For field trip with children they let the children taste fresh squeezed sugar cane! Sounds delicious. As you make your way to the back, they have a chicken cope as well as some goats and a bunny. Around that area you'll notice a few areas your child can play such as a pretend kitchen, boat, swing and slide! We got to slide down the slide and it was super fun! I enjoyed it. What a delightful morning playing on a farm tucked at the base of Koko Crater. I've been meaning to bring my little guy here for months, but couldn't make it work. Finally got out here yesterday and we will definitely be back. They're only open two mornings a week (at least for the public, they do school field trips, too). It's a great place for the keiki to play and experience agriculture, too. Since my 3yo is a little iffy on vegetables, I'm hoping that getting to pick his own might jumpstart his interest. We'll see! Anyhow, we arrived a little before 9am. Entrance to the farm and play area is $5 per family, which is a steal. We were directed up the hill to the play area where the chickens and bunnies live - most groups play first, then pick veggies. We had the option of purchasing fresh eggs at the entrance, or taking an empty carton and harvesting eggs as the chickens lay them. Um, yes please! We walked up the hill and my little guy went straight for the trucks and excavators - there's a big pit of sand/dirt with shovels, dinosaurs, trucks, magnifying glasses. There's a mud kitchen, a pirate boat, a swing, a net tent, a balance beam, and plenty of places for keiki to do unstructured outdoor play. They have a bunch of things that kids can just use their imaginations with - like a bunch of wood pieces to stack or build or whatever. There's a big (and steep!) slide that was a little fun for the grownups, too. Pallets for exploring and balancing. And then there's the farm! They have a bunch of chickens and they let the keiki feed them, along with the bunnies (who are a bit shy). The owners and staff were on hand to explain or answer questions. It was pretty cool when we got to see one chicken fluff up, ready to lay an egg, and then voila! She laid right in front of us. Once my little one started to look a bit tired, we decided to go pick some veggies and head home. They offer $5/$10/$15 baskets and you can pick anything you like that has a sign in front indicating it's ready. Yesterday, they had kale, chard, all kinds of herbs like basil, cilantro, thyme, oregano, and sage, a few cherry tomatoes that weren't quite ripe yet, eggplant, carrots, even papaya and banana. We spent $5 and came home with some herbs, an eggplant, two green bananas, and a couple carrots, and the fun of picking them ourselves. Staff were available for questions about the produce and picking but totally not overbearing. I think what I appreciated most is the aloha and laid-back attitude here. They give the keiki a lot of freedom to just come and enjoy. Within about 20 minutes of opening, it got pretty busy (I think schools are out now, though I mostly saw pre-K kiddos, there was a mix of early school-age, too) but didn't feel especially crowded because there were always open places to go. Some extra seating for the grown-ups would have been nice, but it was also fun to play and explore right along with the keiki. It's just behind Kaiser HS. Parking is available on-site for about 20 cars or so. No restrooms, so plan ahead! They do have a handwashing station. Bring your own snacks and water. read more

We went as a small group at 9am when they opened; get there right when they open before the parking fills up and it gets crowded. This place is a total gem! My sweet boy turned 2 and I was so excited to bring him here for the first time to let him explore. Keiki and Plow is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9am to 11am and is located directly behind Kaiser High School. There is a decent amount of parking on the property, but the main drawback is that if the lot runs out of parking you'll need to park a little ways away in the residential neighborhood. There's a little station at the front and there's a requested donation of $5 per family. That's also where you collect your baskets to pick produce at and pay if you pick certain items like eggs and papaya. One side of the property is a U-Pick area lined with produce they grow themselves, we saw butter lettuce, kale, tomatoes, herbs, spring mix, papaya, and a few other items. You purchase a basket according to size and fill 'er up! Up top is the children's play area and my little guy had such a blast! There's a terraced area that separates a lower seating, hang out area from the higher play area; the kids can use a little path to get up and use a giant slide to come down, super fun! Once there they have a large sand (honestly, dirt) box with little shovels, digging toys, and trucks to play in. There are goats in a pen that they allow the children in to pet and feed and a larger chicken coop with tons of chickens and a resident rabbit wandering around. In the coop there are spots for the chickens to rest and sleep in and it was explained to me that you can just reach under the chickens to check for eggs. I had one of the boys who worked there take me over to show me and it was so interesting, when I had walked away initially there were no eggs and when I returned about 20 minutes later there were a few. He explained that different chickens laid different colored eggs and could even point out which chicken laid what; the colors ranged from browns, to pinks to spotted even, a really cool activity for the kids (and me). In the parking area there is a sink to wash up at as well as a porta potty (the only bathroom option). This experience was so awesome for my son and I truly enjoyed myself as well, I believe we spent around an hour and a half on site. Found this place on yelp while trying to find things to inn the summertime other than the norm. Was a little skeptical at first because it only had great review. But the idea of picking your own veggies and eggs sounded awesome. We got there early we ere the first ones there. So early we ended up helping them out as they were still doing their final touches before opening. There was s good amount of veggies to chose from. They provide you with baskets $10/$20$40 dollars. You can purchase fresh eggs by the dozen at the check-in area for $10 or the your chances and see if the hens have laid eggs up in the chicken coop. Those are $1 each $5 for half doz or $10 for dozen. Picking eggs was probably the coolest experience. We got to pick them right from under the mama hens. They were warm .. My son that was super cool. Must have: water, insect repellent, snacks, sanitizing wipes, and a bag to bring your produce home in. They do have a porta potty in front by the parking area. Thankfully none of my children had to go. Who knows itcmight of been clean but regardless i don't like those and like to avoid them if possible. Heather was so kind to let me install the balloon garland 2 hrs prior. There's big cooler, outlets, grill , bluetooth speaker you can use. Heather educated my guests about the animals and the plants. However, I went recently and would have liked to have seen the changes they have made advertised here on their page. You now have to sign a waiver form, and the small basket is now $10, instead of $5. That's a 100% markup for the same small basket. I say, pay the $5 admission fee for the kids to play, but skip picking the basil and cilantro. You get more from a farmer's market w/ $10 than you would here. Also, give your kid more than an hour to play. Otherwise, driving out there and spending $5 won't be worth it. read more
