Just airy goodness and perfectly sweetened. The chocolate glaze which on the richer side and the crunchy sprinkles were a great touch. They have coffee available for a dollar or so with cream and sugar available which was a nice surprise. They also have bags of dinner rolls available, alongside loafs of bread. Small shop so only a few people can stand inside and order. We paid $9.25 cash for our 1/2 dozen and was pleasantly surprised they have a cash discount, or should say they include fees on the card reader if you use card/tap to pay. Olsens bake shop is better than any other donut shop in Omaha, they have all the awards to prove it! Donuts are $1.50 each and they also have turnovers, rolls, and breads you can get too! The women running the shop are quick, they want you satisfied and out the door because the shop is TINY! They are only open from 7:30-12 Tuesday-Saturday so plan accordingly! The raised ring with chocolate frosting is my favorite, it's fluffy and sweet, nothing bad about it. We stopped by on the way out of town for a quick breakfast. I'm so glad we did! First thing, full stop. Their version of a sour cream old fashioned was the best I've ever had. It was so soft and had great flavor. I wish i had gotten more than one. We also got a plain donut that was good. I think im used to them being more spiced so it was an adjustment at first. It would probably be fabulous as a dipping or dunking donut. I will say I wasnt a fan of the apple kolache(?). Not sure of the spelling. It was an enriched dough with an apple topping in the middle. The dough had a great texture but it ended up tasting like apple pie filling on a hamburger bun to me. Husband agreed. It wasn't badly made, it just wasn't what we prefer in a pastry. I had read about Olsen Bake Shop while researching where to eat in Omaha and I'm really glad I took the time to stop in. It was a bit out of the way of my hotel, but it's on a main strip and I had a pleasant time walking over. It isn't open too late so you need to get there early. When I arrived, I was the only patron in there and there were three people eager to help me. I ended up ordering a couple of donuts and a kolache (I love kolaches but they're hard to find near me in DC so I was delighted to find them here). The donuts were melt in your mouth fresh and I savored every bite. The kolache itself was great, but the raspberry filling tasted very artificial, which was a letdown. On my perpetual doughnut quest, I rank Olsen's as one of the best in the classics category. This no frills bake shop puts out great tried and true classic glazed doughnuts, crullers, iced cake, glazed croissants, etc. The cake doughnut had a great golden color but the cake recipe itself was a little bland. I like a little spice or oomph in my cake doughnuts so these just tasted a bit mild. Quite sweet icing but it wasn't too thick. They're also a bargain at just $1 per doughnut! Some places are selling crazy toppings these days but Olsens sticks to the classics and does them well. During COVID they are limiting capacity to 3 customers at once (it's quite a small shop). So there will likely be a bit of a wait--I think I waited 12 minutes around 10 AM on a Saturday. It's a cute little shop, it's been there quite some time by the looks of it. read more

OMG, I love this bakery. I went here for the first time with my daughter a couple weeks ago and the donuts were amazing. You walk in and stand in line for a couple minutes since this place isn't a secret any more. I ordered a few glazed/frosted donuts and an apple fritter. They just took the fritter out of the oven and holy geez, it was the best apple fritter I've ever had. The prices are very reasonable as well. $1 -$1.50 or so per donut. The freshest donuts in Omaha!! We have lived in the "Little Bohemia" part of Omaha for 20+ years and this is a landmark family business. I had not visited Olsen's in a couple of years, dealing with various Covid policies over most of the time, but today is the first day of our family vacation and I had a lot of packing to do for the road trip and I suggested going to buy a few donuts for breakfast. I knew they had re-opened but hadn't seen if their business was back. When I arrived, I had to drive around to get a parking space. I realized, the street was full because of the line for Olsen's. People waited outside for the chance to enter the lobby and place their orders. A donut is $1.25 ($15/dozen) and the owner will give you a smile to start your day. When I got home and ate the glazed donut and the chocolate frosted long john with coconut it was obvious that they were prepared this morning, so minutes old instead of hours or more from the grocery store.
