Olsen Bake Shop is a small place south of downtown Omaha. It has no seating. The area around the shop isn't the greatest. The shop itself is bare bones. It's staffed by a few older ladies that will curtly take your order and fill it promptly. No fuss. Minimal chat. Older reviews said they don't take credit card. Wrong. They do, but there's an extra 50¢ charge to all purchases. Let's be real: any review that says "these are the BEST DONUTS EVAR" is hyperbolic. Donuts are donuts, and very little separates those that are good from one another. These donuts are generally good. The plain glazed was soft, not overly sweet, and melted in my mouth. The glazed croissant was surprising good and similar to the glazed donut. I'd rate both of these in the top echelon of donuts from the myriad of donut places at which I've eaten. The chocolate glazed longjohn with white filling was "meh." The cheese danish was dry. These two rated on par with grocery store donuts. Wouldn't buy them again. Finally: price. $1+ per donut. Some reviews say those are good prices. Not sure where they live, but in all my travels in the Midwest, that puts them squarely on the pricey side. Overall: good, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go there again. read more

A good friend was visiting from North Dakota, and for a Saturday morning time to catch up there was no other choice than Olsen's. Everything they make is fresh and fabulous. I had a cheese danish and a fluff-filled long john, and he had a plain cake donut, because Olsen's is the only place that makes a plain cake donut worthy of having, in his opinion. Be aware there's no seating inside. It's strictly carry out, which I think has to do with taxes. Also, on a Saturday, be prepared to wait a few minutes. We pulled up at 8:30, and there was a pretty steady line of five people or so, both when we got there and as we left. Great donuts, pastries, and cookies, made and served fresh by great people. I went here for the first time this morning (6/29/24) because the positive reviews were so good. I was not disappointed. My wife and I loved everything we got (kolaches, cookies, apple turnovers, glazed croissants, white cream filled chocolate covered long johns, and more). Hands down the best bakery in Omaha. It was well worth the 20 minute drive from Bellevue. Get there early. I arrived 35 minutes before they opened, and there were already 6 people in line ahead of me. Yum yum yum. I don't often indulge in donuts, but when I do, it better be worth it. And obviously I don't mean financially because donuts are generally damn cheap. When I indulge in a few extra hundred calories purely from sugar, I want it to taste amazing. I want it to melt on my tongue, with sweet sucrose satisfaction and no guilty feelings afterwards because it tasted so good it was totally WORTH IT. And this was exactly the kind of good times feeling I had after pounding down 2 donuts (chocolate devils food glazed and white frosted cake, respectively) this morning in the meeting in which I was the bringer of morning cakes and supplier of sweets. First off they DO take credit cards; it goes through an Ipad app and they charge you 50¢ to do it. I didn't use this option but it's right when you walk in the door. I haven't had a doughnut in probably 10 years... yeah seriously, and for some reason I decided I NEEDED a doughnut before I moved away from Omaha. With so many choices that look delicious I picked Olsen Bake Shop since it had the best reviews. Lemme tell ya, I'm not disappointed! The place is a little unassuming shop I've driven by a handful of times. Besides the slow flashing sign you might wonder if they've closed, but they haven't. You walk in and the smell hits you and the doughnut angel sing. Even though it was a Monday "morning" around 10AM there was still a line. The lady who runs the front is as sweet as can be. We got a good laugh out of my having not eaten a doughnut in so long. I settled on a pecan roll and a filled long john. My total after tax was $1.70, you know in a lot of places you'd pay that just for one doughnut. I drove home tormented by the smells of doughnuts in my car. Getting home I brewed a strong cup of coffee and sat down to enjoy. The chocolate covered one is what I'd call your standard good ole American doughnut (although I'm sure it's more on the French side, but let's not argue right now). Sweet, soft, and not too greasy. Sadly the older man in front of me took the last peanut one otherwise I would have gotten that one. The pecan roll though... now I haven't had one of those in 14 years since I lived with my Great Grandma (rip). She was VERY picky and would have a bake shop make her a batch once a week because they were the only ones who made them correctly... well I think she'd approve of this one. Not too sweet, not too soggy, just enough pecans. Goes great with a coffee. What I'm trying to say is, you're missing out if you don't drive down to Olsen Bake shop and get a doughnut for breakfast. This really is one of my top 3 favorite bakery spots of all time. -Ca$h only! No large bills. -no dine-in area. -I always get at least one or two of their coconut-chocolate cake donuts. They're divine. This is the only place I get them from. The donut itself is perfectly crispy outside and so soft inside! -I'm not typically a danish type of gal, but theirs are pretty darn good! The cream cheese one is a little thin (filling feels more pudding texture than anything) but still a great flavor! -always always get a sour cream donut! This is my favorite donut shop in Omaha and has become part of my Friday morning routine. I credit Olsen's with my new love for cake donuts ... their cake donuts are slightly crunchy on the outside, but warm and soft and dough-like in the inside. They are sooo delicious. On Friday and Saturday mornings only, they sell these croissants that have been first lightly fried, then glazed. Like... my mouth is watering thinking about them. They are so worth the trip. They sell out though quickly, so make sure to grab them early! Finally, they also sell cookies which are always so soft and gooey. My favorite is the toffee ones. Try them! Each donut is like $.75, so deal. They prefer cash, but accept credit cards and charge you an extra $.50. read more

I've been here twice now and see no reason to visit another bakery ever again. Both times the ladies behind the counter have been kind and welcoming and the donuts fresh and delicious. The variety that they have is almost crazy and I can't pick a favorite. Lemon, raspberry, cherry, chocolate cherry (only on Saturday I discovered last Sunday), glazed croissants, fritters... The maple glazed creme filled doughnut was my personal favorite among the claimed most popular classic glazed and apple fritter. The fritter was lacking a bit of complexity in regards to taste. This bake shop is definitely tied for first place as my favorite old school bakery in Omaha. This shop brings back the child memories of visiting a great bake shop where you are excited to see what kind of cookies they made today, and their cookies here are unbeatable. One of the things I love best about this shop is the holidays. Halloween cookies, homemade Fruit Cake during Christmas, the sweet little Lamb shaped cakes they make for Easter. You can grab yourself a chocolate milk out of their freezer, a bag of cookies and you are on your way. The price is awesome. You will not go broke at this bakery. It's worth every bite! A donut shop that is ALL five star reviews? Come on, that can't be. Oh yeah it can, especially when the donuts are this good. As of about four days ago, I had no idea Olsen's bake shop existed. Thankfully, the Omaha World Herald had a feature on local donuts and I learned about it. So, I had to give it a shot. I stopped in on Monday morning and got three different donuts: a glazed, a cake, and a cinnamon roll. All three were great, fresh and delicious. The cake donut was just as Katelyn E. described it, slightly crunchy on the outside but oh so tasty. Man, it was crowded when I came back here around 10AM after calling in to make sure they were open. It's a small place, and there were at least 6 other people in line. I had come in earlier, but they had opened 30 minutes later than what their hours said. Everything is so cheap, and although they're not the prettiest donuts, they make up for it in how soft and delicious they are! I wasn't even entirely sure what the donuts I got were cause they weren't labeled and I didn't want to ask about each one since there was a line, but you can't go wrong with anything here. A lot of reviews said the cake donuts here were the best, but I don't think I grabbed any this time around (there's always next time). The ladies behind the counter were warm and helpful. The prices were awesome; we got a combination of 6 pastries including a regular glazed doughnut, bear claw, and apple turnover for about $6. The pastries themselves, delicious! My personal favorite was a glazed croissant. It was soft on the inside, with a flaky, iced outside. It was flavored well, but there was a balance to the flavors. That was really tasty. The other pastries were just as good (and they were fresh), but that was the most memorable.
