I am a loyal shopper of Olson's Tack Shop for a number of reasons. The customer service has always been great. I've never once experienced an unprofessional or negative encounter with them. My mom and I visit this store many times a month, especially when both of us were searching for a saddle. We actually never ended up purchasing a saddle from Olson's because we couldn't find the right fit, but we sure did try out a lot of them. The staff was super helpful when we had questions, and it was very easy to check out the saddles, ride in them, and return them the next day. From what we've seen, the owner is great to the employees. For example, Olson's is closing the store for a day to take all of the employees foxhunting! That's pretty cool to see. We've purchased our boots, helmets, gloves, jodhpurs, and many other horsey things from here. My mom and I are on their mailing list and follow them on Facebook and go to all of their sales and special events too, which happen pretty often. Great store, great people! read more

Made an appt to get fitted for a helmet, and staff was great at getting me and my friend fit. They were very understanding about my desired price range and needs. Did not try to over or undersell me. After a 15 year break from riding, it was time to get back into the saddle! I decided to visit Olson's to stock up on the essentials. It was a great decision - they have the nicest staff here! One of the gals walked me through the whole store and helped me shop item by item, making it a painless, fast and easy experience. Always our go-to place for tack in the Seattle area. They carry top brands, a good selection of clothing, and plenty of essentials we always need around the barn. They also handle all our custom orders for the barn, like trunk covers and show sheets. The prices are a bit high, but so are the prices for everything related to our sport!! A friend of mine purchased a saddle on 9/7/15 and sadly was killed in a tragic auto accident on 9/8/15. My friend's husband is still at Harbor View in ICU, a month later. The owner of the stable where my friend boarded her horse tried to return the saddle as she was directed by an employee of Olson's Tack. They had the receipt. This was only a few days after the saddle was purchased. Mike, the owner refused the return but was willing to take it on consignment at 25%! Really, the owner is going to profit from the person who died twice? First from the purchase the day before she died and then a 25 percent consignment a few days later?? This is so wrong and such poor customer service especially under such horrific circumstances. Another shop, a Gift Horse, has taken the saddle on consignment for free due to circumstances and their kindness will be repaid with loyalty. Mike, the owner, could learn a lot from Gift Horse. I would never refer anyone to Olson's Tack ever. *NOTE: I've asked Mike (owner) for his side of the story. To date I've not gotten an answer on his story. The fact is that the saddle was purchased the day before my friend died and was brought back in Olson's Tack Shop only a few days after purchase WITH a receipt. What poor business. I've lived in the Puget Sound area and have been in the horse industry for going on 18 years and have shopped at Olson's for many of those years. I've bought boots, tack and other items here and have brought other horse friends to the shop as well. However, after my latest experience there, I don't think I will be doing that any longer. My roommate and I, both seasoned horse people, went in to buy some supplies for her horse and as I usually do I was perusing their saddles. I have been looking for a nice all-purpose saddle and as I was going through them saw one on the bottom rack that I thought would work. It had been piled under another so I pulled it out and set it on the free standing rack so I could look at it. I was immediately set upon by an employee who nearly bit my head off for "handling" the saddle. Apparently as I am not an employee I am not allowed to handle the saddle at all. She directed me to go to their website to look at how to fit saddles to make my saddle shopping experience with them "quicker". I don't need to go to their website to make it quicker. She did that all on her own as I will not be back to shop with them. Now if I had been flinging the saddle around, or bending the leather I would have understood her overreaction, but as the saddle was stacked beneath other saddles and I had only pulled it out to get a better look at it I felt belittled by her reprimand and I don't need to feel that for looking at something that I could potentially spend several hundred to thousands of dollars on. I know how to carefully handle tack, I've been doing so for over a decade, and if I don't handle it I don't know if I'll want to buy it so I don't know how they expect me to make a purchase with them. Sadly for Olson's this happened in front of my roommate who was also put off by this employee and said she would also no longer be shopping with them. read more

A new update on Olson's. I figured this review was long over-due for an edit. I left it starting out as it originally was, but have added quite a bit. Originally written almost 18 months ago. __________________________________ I don't understand how a store can double in size and offer LESS variety. I grew up riding English on the east coast. I grew up shopping in the Gladstone, NJ Beval store (this is a big deal, Beval is one of the top of the line shops). Beval is to NJ what Olson's is to Seattle--or at least, what Olson's should be. It still falls short in a few areas, despite major improvements over the past year. When I visit home I bring an extra suitcase because many things are just not carried here. They have expanded their supply of Tailored Sportsman items since my last review, carrying a few things they did not carry before. There is more space than ever before dedicated to the more premium brands, and they now carry more than two colors of TS breeches (Oak Manor in Aiken carries all of the colors, but I digress). This is improvement they should be praised for. I still think dedicating a rack to having all the colors--Gallops Saddelry Style--would be the ideal to strive for. When looking through their catalog it was not actually updated for the 2014 TS breech colors. I have ordered a pair from the east coast and wore them in one day. It surprised them to know it was an actual, real color. Perhaps their lack of variety is not their fault if the catalog is out of date. They also expanded their helmet and boot line, carrying a wider variety in that department. I am fully supportive of this decision. On top of that, I've been mulling around the idea of buying a new helmet for awhile now. It's not that I don't intend to get one, it's that I end up unsure and chicken out. Then I come back and try the same ones on to compare again. I'm a very, very annoying customer. They spend time trying to help me find the perfect one every single time, trying on the same helmets every single time, with more patience than most stores I know of. It's been very helpful, and I feel guilty because I know I must be annoying. But having a store that doesn't (outwardly) judge me for being so flaky is a godsend. They carry a variety of helmets to satisfy anyone's needs. Customer service extends to the boots. No matter how big of a flake I am, they always help me out. I've never once heard "but you've tried these on several times now, how do you still not know?" and I'm grateful for that. These big purchases mean something to me and when the moment is right, my helmet will definitely come from Olson's. I still wish they carried brands along the lines of Der Dau, Parlanti or Sergio Grasso for boots. Their sock selection is in desperate need of expansion, as is their blanket selection. Where is Baker? Their saddle pad collection also could use some freshening up. Seeing Ogilvy would be nice. Normally, I would be lenient with a store for not carrying everything possible. Some brands can have hard negotiation practices (Tailored Sportsman for example is infamous for demanding tack shops also order their shirts and less popular items along with breeches). But Olson's is supposed to be a high end show shop. They act like one. They talk like one. They have the price tags of one. But when it comes to what they actually have in stock, with the exception of a few fine items like the custom boots, helmets, TS or pikeurs, they aren't a high end store. They don't carry all the brands I'd expect to find in one, forcing me to order online, return things that don't fit and rinse and repeat. That is my irritation with it. Edit: After the past year of some serious inventory re-organizing, I'm bumping it back up to four stars. I'm still leaving my criticisms in because I believe the store can do better--they're the only "high end" tack shop in the area. I'd like for them to carry a better variety so I could give them more of my money instead of having to order what I want online. I will also continue shopping here. read more

Olson's is the GOLD standard for the best Equestrian goods around. They are known as one of the top saddle shops in the country. The service is the best barred none! If you just like the polo, dressage or jumping look and don't ride, go in anyway, you may love the fashions and home furnishings. Who doesn't like the look of nice boots and great riding pants and a dashing coat or jacket! Dog gifts too. They have a huge knowledge base so take advantage and ask questions, they are all horse owners and serious riders. Mike and his staff at Olson's represent the best in small business. I've been a customer for years, and the service, staff, and selection just keeps getting better and better. I recently stopped by their booth at the Classic, and Lorraine walked me through the new Bute saddles with great detail, gave me inside scoop on fit, and no pressure to buy. Although I enjoyed contemplating that exquisite of a saddle, I also stopped into the shop and Courtney helped me look at gently used consignment saddles. Within minutes of listening to my description of riding, she selected three saddles for me to try, one being perfect for both me and my horses. I took the saddle on trial, and purchased it a few days later, with all the fixins (leathers, stirrups, breast collar, etc.) What I love about Olson's is that it didn't matter to them if I bought the top of the line brand new saddle, or an excellent quality consignment saddle - they just came alongside me and helped me find the *right saddle for me.* The store is pure gold: the inventory is always fresh, the appreciation of customers is evident throughout the store, the staff is always genuinely interested but not overbearing, and I can shop with personal help or alone in peace. They are active in the community, they all ride themselves, and donate to various charities. There's a reason people drive hours to come to Olson's. It's a gem. While visiting the Seattle area, I stopped in to see what a Pacific NW tack store had to offer. Being from horse-central Virginia and having evented/foxhunted/shown/PonyClubbed etc for over 25years, I've been to tack stores all over the country and I thought Olson's was great! I was really surprised at the variety of items they carry. From breeches and other clothing to grooming equipment, tack and hanging bags, boots (tall and paddock), danskos, children's clothing, gloves, helmets and even consignment saddles, everything was top quality. They carry excellent brands too- Pikeur, Nunn Finer, Grand Prix, Ariat for example. I didn't see some of my go-to's or fav brands like Tredstep half-chaps, Tailored Sportsman crochet- back gloves, Dubarry or Barbour. I do totally recognize that these brands might have more of an East Coast following though. The staff I spoke with very super nice and knowledgeable and gave me info about the local horse scene. I grew up in Bridal Trails/Pikes Peak/Cherry Crest area. Growing up I have seen a horse friendly community slowly disintegrate. Less and less people are interested in owning them around here. Olson's has survived, and with good reason. They are a true english shop. I use to love to come here and check out all the new equipment when they were located right off 405 in a hidden nook. I like that they carry the higher end brands in boots, saddles, grooming supplies- everything. And if you're like myself and only ride English for shows, you still will find what you need. I mainly showed in the APHA and AQHA which didn't take English as serious as other associations (I rode all around) but could still find items I needed. read more

Olson's is super awesome. The staff is incredibly helpful, there are a lot of them so you don't have to wait, and they are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. They have the nice, expensive brands, Ariat, Grand Prix etc. and they also have the non-expensive but still good brands, Dublin, Ovation etc. Their prices are definitely comparable, and the same as the other tack shops in the area. No matter what you're looking for from a tack shop, Olson's has it, the expensive and non-expensive, and also the best staff! read more

I have been shopping at Olsons Tack since I was a young girl learning to ride (1988.) I still remember going for my first tall boot fitting at the old store by 405. The smell, so much riding equipment to gaze upon - truly an intoxicating experience for a young, horse crazy girl. While the "new" store is both beautiful and much bigger, it still feels like Olsons because the owners continue to carry their business ideals forward. Being a pro for more than ten years now and a small business owner myself, who I refer to is a very personal matter for me. I am proud to say that I refer my students to Olsons with confidence. Especially my new riders. They always return to the barn with the appropriate gear that fits. (More than I can say for my experience with most any other stores in the area.) Olson's is a great tack shop. It has everything you might need- about a hundred different varieties of breeches, show coats, shirts, boots, saddles and more. It's kind of in the middle of nowhere and honestly doesn't look that nice when you see it from the outside, but once you actually step foot into the store you'll realize what a nice place it is. The one thing I had to worry about when I was shopping there was that things can get very pricey very fast. At the same time, it's really easy to get great gear. I ended up getting a great deal on a pair of $900 Konig pull on field boots that ended up only being $148, which was a steal! But then the sales lady ended up also roping me into getting leather gloves and nice ariat show pants too. Another thing was, even though the ladies working there were fairly friendly, they seemed like they were judging me. I could definitely see how someone could feel intimidated going in here. Altogether, though, it's a great place to go if you have money to spend and are getting ready for a show! read more

If you want to experience the Pretty Woman scene where Julia goes shopping on Rodeo Drive and is snubbed then this is the place to go. I have never been treated with dignity or respect of any kind here (and I have given them multiple chances to prove me wrong). That is why I refuse to go back. Also, I have found the other tack shops in the area to have a better selection and people that are actually friendly and helpful! In fact, after my last trip to Olson's I went directly to the Gift Horse and purchased a pair of Fits followed by some Dubarry boots online... purchases I could actually feel good about. Don't waste your time at Olson's unless you want to get treated like you are a piece of garbage. read more

Went here for small business Saturday after black Friday. I tried on a wide variety of breeches and half chaps. I felt the service was just right - the lady who helped me was genuinely interested in attaining the right fit. I didn't feel judged or neglected, as some reviewers have. I appreciated the selection of quality tack and riding apparel. We tend to order online and forget the fun of the in person buying experience! I thought I would honestly try some things on and buy it online (mostly to avoid the steep WA sales tax), but I enjoyed the experience and appreciated the 15% holiday discount, so I purchased what I needed in store. I will definitely return for things I need from now on and feel comfortable...this isn't just a sport for the independently wealthy, but for hard working horse enthusiasts as well. read more

This isn't the Olson's I remember from even a year or two ago. I think the staff must all be new, I didn't recognize anyone while in over the weekend. I understand that happens, and while I can't comment on the current staffs demeanor (no one helped us other than when I asked a question), I miss that warm welcome feeling I used to receive. I was shopping with my daughter and we were both in need of new breeches for the summer show season, both left empty handed. We were told the sizes/styles we needed were on their mobile unit which was out at a show all weekend. I would call ahead and check before making the trip down next time. This is a fun place to peruse clothing, but make sure you don't stop by while the mobile unit is at a show because selection is much slimmer. Also price and selection of grooming supplies and sprays/shampoos etc is much less at feed stores or online. read more

I am so offended by Olson's prices. They really need to check their price points before marking up their inventory unless they are just taking advantage of their location to charge people more. I just paid double the price for a horse product that every place on line and in other towns outside of Bellevue is literally half the price. If I would have known this I would have never made a purchase here. Unfortunately, my horse needed something immediately so I had no choice. I paid for convenience, I realize, but I think double is a bit too much, don't you? I checked online before stopping in and they did not have it listed on their website, otherwise I would have been forewarned. Instead, I called to check if they carried what I needed, not thinking they would be so overpriced, I neglected to ask how much. I will not make that mistake again. I don't think I have every seen a retailer of any kind so off base on pricing in our metropolitan area. I was shocked needless to say. Olson's has great service and all employees are knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. Mike, the owner, fit me for some great tall boots and has always been there for any issues, namely a problem with a First Lady GPA helmet. The first time a strap broke and the second time the top of the helmet was loose and rattling. Mike sent it back to GPA both times and it was replaced both times. As someone who purchased their first pair of boots at Olson's when it was still in Downtown Bellevue and seperate from the late Mills Tack Shop I have to say I'm sorely disappointed at what Olson's has become. Maybe I was naive, but I used to think the people there as friendly and helpful. Now I just think they're snobs. I used to think their prices were middle of the road. Now I think they're highway robbery. The only reason I gave them two stars instead of one is because they genuinely have nice things for sale, but even so, I can still find all those same things online for MUCH less. read more

I'm giving one star because at least the staff was helpful when I initially went in. Unfortunately, they failed in the follow through. I went in for gloves, they told me I had to order them but could have them delivered to my home. After waiting for them, I get a call saying they are in the store. I say "you were supposed to have them delivered to my home." The girl apologizes and says she will send them. Three days later I get another call "your gloves are in the store." Me again: You were supposed to have sent them to my house initially, and again three days ago. Three different sales people later I here "we can send them, but you need to pay for shipping." Ummmm, didn't I do that and that's how they got to your store? Long story short, after waiting way too long, I had to drive over and pick them up. Guess what?? Well that was a great experience. I had shopped at Olsons years ago and then moved to California. Having returned recently and in need of new riding clothes and equipment, my partner and I made a visit today. Although I was familiar with the store I have to say I was a little put off by the Yelp comments, so many of which seemed to be negative. I have to say we could not have had better service or help. Courtney was patient, helpful and an absolute delight to work with. We tried on helmets and breeches, lots of them, before making our decision. She could not have been nicer.
