I have shopped at Olson's for over 40 years. I bought my first hunt coat here when I was 11, and my first pair of custom boots. They carry fun things, and always have been friendly and helpful. Mike does a great job, and has an eye for what his customers want. That said, I haven't shopped there now in a few years, and probably won't. The direction the shop has gone is the same direction that much of the show circuit has gone. High end. Very, very high end. High end saddles. High end riding boots. High end fashion. I commend Olson's for making the business work in a tough, competitive market, and giving their customers what they want. But often, since I don't show much anymore, I don't necessarily want high end. For example, I just need a pair of good riding gloves. Solid gloves that will hold up to multiple rides - not the latest in expensive show gloves that rip out in a month or two. Or a pair of paddock boots that aren't Ariats (they don't fit me). I've always gotten my custom boots, chaps, etc., at Olson's, and they do a terrific job. But I don't show anymore. And I want good equipment and clothes, quality that will hold up, and be serviceable. It doesn't need to be the latest and greatest, but solid and affordable. But it seems to be harder to find the workmanlike riding apparel, boots, gloves, etc.at the store these days. Or tack that is solid, mid range - not fancy show tack. And because of that, I have a hard time sending beginning and intermediate riders here because of that. And I find that very sad. read more
