I'm so proud to have this in our city. Welcome back, glad you can call this location your new home. It's definitely an upgrade from the former area on 6th ave. With a deli seating, huge assortment of beverages and skincare, and lots of parking. However, I do miss the old thrift store here and I thought it was supposed to locate to hilltop so that the community there would have access to more fresh veggies and fruits?! (Right?) Anyways, I'm glad they opened and members can now be happy. I'm happy that they have a burrito station. $7.99 for a huge happy baby burrito with fillings galore. And I love the beautiful plants/planters that are for sale, available outside!

Fresh carrot, beet, and ginger juice!

I shop at the co-op pretty regularly, since I live nearby, but this review is for the juice bar. I have been planning on getting a juice here since the co-op opened. I don't know what took me so long. You really can't beat the price. For $5 or the equivalent to a latte, you can get fresh squeezed juice and/or vegetables. I opted for carrot, beet, and ginger. It was delicious and healthy and I felt good afterward. A+. I will be back very soon for juice!

The grand opening of Central Co-op has been a long time coming and I can say with certainty it's a huge asset to the North End as part of the recent growth explosion which is making Tacoma increasingly a more desirable place to call home (shhh, yeah I know, let's keep that quiet).... back to review specificity.... I've been twice now and couldn't be more pleased with the offerings, layout, and space. A huge bulk section of what you expect: grains, flours, beans, dried fruits and granolas, grind your own nut butters, and vats of varied honeys and spices & herbs, seasonings and teas. The produce section is vast for a natural foods store, including both typical and the less common, such as the wonderful turmeric root I grabbed to cold-press with carrots and clementines. Another joy to discover are the raw, grass-fed artisan cheeses from local farms (and California) and the genuinely cage-free eggs from four sources. The hot bar hasn't let me down as everything has tasted fresh and delicious for two dinners, even when the warming lamp made the tops appear somewhat dry, all was very fresh tasting. They have a taqueria I've yet to try, but am excited as beans to try! I was happy to see that all containers and "silver"ware for eat-in /take-out can be composted. Yay! They have their liquor license, so beers and wine are an option as well. I haven't perused yet, but I'm sure they must have some organic and gluten-free options, which is exciting. I loved the bread section...all natural, quality yumminess. Compared to nearby Safeway and Metropolitan Market's (which I ADORE) I would say Central Co-op doesn't compete, but complements, with the vast array of items not being available at either of those places. Their competitor would be Marlene's Natural Foods Market on 38th in south Tacoma. Other than Marlene's salad bar, I won't miss heading in that direction for my natural products as Central seems to have them beat on a variety and better prices. I'm glad about proximity to Ruston Point shopping area, Ruston Way waterfront, Point Defiance Park and the ferry terminal. What an awesome place to grab picnic foods and drinks which are good for you. Their large eat-in area is a great place to sit down and quick eat indoors, with plenty of tables. Welcome to the neighborhood Central Co-op! Glad you're here!

Yay, they're finally open! I've been watching the development of this space with anticipation for the past two years or so. My child and I attended their Grand Opening today: what fun! They had a pygmy goat petting zoo set up in the parking lot, face painting, sample giveaways, and fresh grilled corn and sausages from Uli's Famous Sausages cooked up by Uli himself. It was hard to get a 'feel' for the shopping experience here inside the store since they were so crazy busy today, but the space is big, bright, and stocked with lots of fresh produce and other good stuff. We just picked up some fresh fruit on this trip, but I'm sure we'll be back soon (like, maybe later today even). So glad to welcome this business to the neighborhood!

Outstandingly friendly and warm staff. Clean and bright. Terrific selection of natural and local foods . Excellent taqueria bar and juice bar. We will be back!

Everything here is way to expensive. 10 dollars for a sandwich with just meat and cheese. No wonder the place is a ghost town

Do I have to be a member to shop?

Nope, we just walked right in, opened to the Public. Not sure what Co-op actually means but these stores always have good healthy stuff a lot of which may be considered high end, certainly high quality!

After that I would only visit sparingly, looking for things that were either limited or out of stock at the closest Whole Foods. As of this year, I've made it a staple spot for my vegan and vegetarian options. I've been told that they have mostly organic and fresh produce, which I'm looking forward to checking out in the near future. On my most recent trip, I connected with their deli and hot bar, which is small but not lacking in options. The salad bar has a very well-seasoned balsamic tofu, which is my favorite. I've also purchased some of their Seitan options in the frozen food area that's decent. Overall, I truly love this place. It comes equipped with a decent-sized deli dining area / small shop complete with WiFi services in the back. There you can hang out, eat, or indulge in friendly conversations. The customers, deli, produce, and cashier clerks all come together to create a uniquely neighborhood, friendly atmosphere.

It's not exactly cheap but was SO satisfying with that FRESH egg. It hasn't looked right lately and I didn't get one. Finally I straight asked the clerk if they were using processed liquid eggs now and she said yes. You have got to be kidding me? The whole attraction was the REAL EGG. Tastes like ass when you use liquid commercially processed eggs. It is NOT the same. That's why McDs sells so many Egg McMuffins cuz it has a real eggs. Marlenes is really beginning to suck on a lot of fronts. I did get a grab-and-go of garlic salmon and beef meatloaf which were good. I come for the house made food. If I want crap in a can I can get it at Whole Foods and at least they still have real eggs.

This is going to be long…read more... I'm not quite sure what brought me to Sunshine Corners. I would almost call it serendipity, but I was certainly searching for something, I just didn't know exactly what. I had a day off and had spent the earlier part of it wandering, looking for any remaining independent produce stands, butcher shops, or just something that felt like it would nourish and heal me because I had been feeling....well? physically, emotionally, existentially, and psychologically, like absolute crap. Historically I've spent years independently studying nutrition and biochemistry, herbalism and traditional medicine, but over the years I'd strayed from those things and lost my way. All this to say I may have forgotten some things but I recognize when someone else knows their stuff. I wandered into Sunshine Corners, originally for a good sandwich and maybe some produce. What immediately struck me was how comforting this place was, and how much it felt like the old school apothecaries or coop's before they became adulterated by mainstream capitalist influences. Stay with me here. I overheard Tony talking to one of the people at the front desk and immediately realized "ok, that guy knows his stuff". Meekly, when he had a moment, I walked over to him and basically, in a sort of desperate manner, laid out my litany of aches and pains and mysterious ailments, expecting an abrupt hand waving answer. That is not what I got. Tony spent what might have been somewhere between 45 minutes and an hour with me, patiently asking me questions and pulling out reference literature. He recognized things in me that no one else had been able to see, and pointed me in a direction that has allowed me to focus on actually getting better rather than just collapsing in frustration. Tony, if you're reading this, the time you spent helping me meant so much to me. Your years of wisdom made a huge impact, but more importantly, your humanity.

I would love to give it 5 stars and expected to feel a 5 star visit. I have been told over an over by friends to talk to Tony, and so, this time, I did. I had needs, based on a protocol that I researched, and Tony offered alternatives, claiming them to be superior. When I pushed back sticking to items I was more sure about, he seemed put-off, stand-offish. The store was super busy, people asked him for advice, he handed them bottles, they paid and left. It was a little weird. I didn't mind at all that he went off to help others, but he avoided contact with me from there out. As I was leaving after spending nearly $200 cash, I shouted, "Thanks Tony," and his "bye" was somewhat of a good-riddance. a couple days later; the one alternative that I took his advice on, I reacted horribly to. When I called the store to find out if he had a specific brand I wanted, he shiftily attempted to sell the same one I reacted to already, so I explained that I bought that one on his suggestion and reacted horribly. He was quite aloof, saying [the brand I wanted was] "not right, now" [in stock]. It's not that I won't shop there anymore, but I don't feel welcome, and will consider other options moreso now, but for sure will not be engaging with Tony when I do. I go out of my support local businesses that don't have political pull. Don't get me wrong... I witnessed that Tony is super kind to those that take his advice. His customers are his fans. I just feel shafted. Maybe he can recommend a cream for that ;)
