More than I was expecting. I've been here a few times now, and I like this place. The service is great. It's just a order at the counter deli, but the food is surprisingly tasty. I've ordered the special the last few times. The special rotates each day. They post the upcoming two weeks' specials on a board. Typically these are sandwiches, but I also saw a burger as a special. It is air conditioned, there is a parking lot, and there are tables inside and outside. The dining area is just ok, but the service and food make this a great lunch place. I'll be back. read more

Don't use their online ordering system, it will ask you what time you would like to pick up which was noon after I placed order at 11am, when I went to pick up my order they had several people in line so I excused myself to ask if my online order was ready, the girl at the cash register said "You'll have to wait in line" the only reason I placed the order online was to quickly pick it up and go unfortunately as slow as they take orders I estimate I would have been on line for 15-20 minutes. First time here and this place was amazing. We just moved in to an office space down the way and had heard about it from several people so we decided to try it out. The vibe from right when you walk in is welcoming. You can tell it's a total family-owned environment and we were greeted with a few friendly hello's when we came through the door. Everyone working seemed like they were just having a great day. I ordered the club and my boyfriend ordered the special of the day: a hot ham sandwich. They were both amazing. Everything here is so simple, and that's why we love it. By the time you pick out a soda and a bag of chips, they are bringing you your order. The ingredients were fresh and tasted delicious. Great sandwhich place with fast service. I like that they have a website that they update daily with the daily special. This always includes a drink and chips and full sandwhich for under 7 dollars. Usually call in your order 30 minutes before lunch and it will be ready. Ingrediants are fresh and food taste good. Never had a complaint with the food from this place. A nice little deli that is conveniently located right by our office! Sandwiches are pretty good for the most part (my favorites are the californian, veggie, and chicken salad on squaw bread). I find that I mostly come here for breakfast--only $2.50 for a fresh breakfast sandwich! I like the english muffin, cheddar cheese, and bacon. One of the best parts about this deli is that they have a website where you can check out their daily specials, order online, and set a time to pick it up. Soo convenient! I place my breakfast order, then by the time I get there, it's all ready and takes no time at all. Hands down the best sandwich spot in Carlsbad. I have a hard time going anywhere else. I have a couple usuals that I stick to but you can't really go wrong with anything off their menu. One of those great "industrial area" deli's. They of course cater to the local businesses which is why they close at like 3pm. This is my only complaint. There have been several evenings when I had a jones for one of their sandwiches, but was left wanting. I would say that ON a Roll is a notch better than most every other little deli I have tried. The food is always fresh and plentiful and doesn't taste like something I could pull out of my own fridge at home. Be aware that around lunch (11:30-1pm) this place gets packed, but somehow always manages to get me out fast. What a great spot hidden in a office park. I happened upon On a Roll one day and stopped to buy my workers lunch. The Hawaiian spoke to me and I ordered up for everyone. They raved about it! Just because I'm thin doesn't mean I don't get hungry! Tried On a Roll for the second time today, not going back for a third. I didn't find the staff to be as friendly as everyone says and the sandwiches are nothing special. I ordered a club sandwich and the woman who took my order said that a half club is actually a whole sandwich and asked me if would I like that instead. She actually down-sold me on a smaller sandwich - thats a first! I said okay, not knowing I would get a regular old ham and turkey sandwich with just one slice of turkey on it. I immediately regretted not getting the whole after paying and asked if I could do the 1/2 sandwich, soup combo and she said I couldn't because the 1/2 club is the same as a whole sandwich. Really lady? Because you might lose .50 cents on a cup of soup you prevented a customer of trying your "soup du jour", quite possibly the only reason for that customer to ever return. My go to for years was the Earl's Combo w/ extra Italian dressing... the combo of the mayo and Italian make it a creamy ish dressing with salami, ham and provolone. The specials are often inspired and they throw new specials in with all of the specials the regulars love... I.e... The Rockwell, The Cuban and the sandwich I just had was tasty too... it was a pastrami and swiss on a pretzel roll with purple onion, dill pickle and honey mustard... I took some of the onion off but it was delicious! Just moved to Carlsbad from the Midwest and was looking for a good Deli (McCallister's like) and came across this place. Small diner feel but the soups are AMAZING! I had the Baja enchilada soup and tried the Mushroom Brie Bisque and both were delicious. What prompted me to write this review (besides the great food) was the customer service. When I tried to tip the cashier (because she let me sample the soups) she promptly gave the tip back and said "We are just grateful for your business". Its different every day, with a board indicating the special every day for a two week period. My buddy orders it almost every day. The specials are very infrequently recycled, so it really feels like they never repeat. - Daily trivia question - new question every day. You almost never know the answer, but worth a try. The prize is a free cookie. - Friendly staff! I live in Chicago and only go once, maybe twice on a really good week and they still know my name. Carlsbad club was very good. Almost had that "good ol how momma used to make it" taste about it. I came here expecting a generic sandwich and was impressed. I do recommend you ask for light mayo. The ingredients were fresh, the bread was just the right amount of soft - although cut a bit thick for my liking - and the bacon was crispy and flavorful, adding great texture to the sandwich. The portion size was generous, and there was plenty of turkey. If you don't find a sandwich that you like from their extensive menu, you can always make your own.
