Stopped in to Hungry Bear Deli for lunch for the first time today. It was busy but the staff was hustling. Ordered the Rachel and Ultimate Italian, added some chips, drinks and chocolate chip cookies. The person taking our order was super nice, asked all the important questions and got our orders in quickly. Our sandwiches came out fast and looked fantastic. Even better, they tasted perfect. They were piled high and the bread was soft. We were so stuffed we couldn't eat our cookies and took them to go. All in all, a great visit. My first visit today! I've had them on my list for awhile and I finally got the chance to see if the hype was legitimate. I ordered the Classic Philly to start my journey. TLDR: Easily the best sandwich shop in the San Diego area, hands down. Visited the Hungry Bear based on all the good Yelp reviews, and it didn't disappoint! Parking is a little tight - a limited size lot it shares with other high-traffic restaurants like Starbucks - but there's a moderate amount of indoor seating and 4-5 tables outdoors. Service is fast and friendly. I tried their Philly cheesesteak. OMG. Look at the picture below...just look! They do not skimp on the materials from the roll to the insides. It's a little different than a classic Philly but IMO it's even better - less drippy, especially with melted Provolone - lots of onion and peppers. Stop reading this and go grab one! I sat at a table to avoid the wind and ended up sitting in a metal chair, making it even colder for me. Came in Friday evening with my sister after one of those soul draining weeks, and somehow Hungry Bear Deli turned it completely around, John who took our order is the kind of person who reminds you what true hospitality feels like! Warm, genuine, and effortlessly kind, he made us feel like regulars within minutes. I work at Freddie's Place Animal Hospital & Urgent Care across the street, so spotting a painting of one of our patients (Mr. George, the most iconic little Frenchie ) instantly made my night.
