This was a first for us; the truck was located at Murdoch's Ranch and Hime Supply. There was a nice line, people waiting in the cold say's something about the food! Met a few people we had never known but struck up conversations with them from local to Pennsylvania. The food taken home was delicious and plentiful. The fish was superb and fries were just right. I have yet to find my holy grail for fish and chips here in KC, but I will continue to give places a try. I had heard some good things about On the Hook, a food truck that was near me on 119th and Nall, so I gave them a try. I got three pieces and fries with tartar sauce for $17 with tax and a $2 tip. I said fries, because these aren't English style chips, but regular cut fry that were coated in perhaps the batter. It was good and the coating puts it up and above a plain french fry, but at the end of the day, it is not authentic to an English chip I want and if you told me they came out of a McCain's frozen bag, I'd believe it. The letdown was the fish. Mad of cod, they are not cut in fillets but strips and that is their main problem. A strip of fish will dry out quickly, because the meat is cut thin and narrow here the fish had no juiciness and thus made it tasteless. A good sized fillet is preferred because it retains it's juiciness, even when deep fried. The batter was okay and the tartar sauce was on point, but overall, it was a below average food experience. With prices nowadays, you do get a decent value if your judging by the volume of food, but I'd rather pay a few bucks more and get a single fillet that had a great batter that was crisped to perfection. read more

When we picked it up they were out of coleslaws and thru in a clam chowder with bacon medium size(which did not equal the same price) and did not refund us the money. The soup had bacon in which we do not eat so I had to throw it away. Dear owners please be mindful for religious reasons, and dietary restrictions not everyone eats bacon. This was my go to every other Thurs in Longmont. It was fantastic 2-3 years ago. I have no pictures, suffice to say. We don't eat this much anymore. It might be the barely cooked fries or a dinner that you just toss because fish was overcooked and the fries were limp and fried in grease that wasn't hot enough. I've seen the truck around a few times, but was never able to stop. Finally caught them last night at Westlake Hardware in Lenexa. There were quite a few people waiting in line and a few more who had placed orders ahead online. I waited in line and even with the crowd and online orders, the order came up pretty quickly. I took it home and the food was still nice and hot by the time I got back. The fish was a good portion and breaded nicely. Personally I enjoy a more crispy coating, but it was still very good. The cod was fresh and tasted good on its own, but I also really enjoyed their tartar sauce. The chips/fries were also battered and really, really good. Perfectly crispy and had very good flavor. There was a line of about 8 people. We ordered the fish & chips & a side of coleslaw. They ran out of tarter sauce, but still had 2 other sauces which were good. I ordered a meal (3pc fish & fries) w/ extra pc of fish = $21 + "required" tip (see below) PRO: freshly made, consistent with English fish & chips CON: Only takes cards, which I thought was odd - until I paid. Cashier hands you a phone & you are required to tip to finish the transaction. I'm all for tipping...but don't like it as a requirement. Cashier said they use Square for card processing. Tips shouldn't be required. Not cool. I would have tipped more, in cash, if it wasn't on the card. Poor taste in my opinion. I literally received 6 fries in my container (see pic). For $21, I would have thought more. Came with too many sauces: tartar, sweet chili, ketchup & malt vinegar. Since I only used malt vin, I will be throwing away the rest. Stopped by and ordered a meal and a couple sides to share ($20 for a single plate). We requested Tartar Sauce & Malt Vinegar for our 2 sauces, and they cooked it while we waited. To start this review off I'd like to point out they do not have their prices listed. They do not accept cash also. One meal of three fish planks ( small at that ) and a handful of fries and coke slaw was $30 ! They added a 15 percent tip in the total without telling us also. The batter is delicious, the fries crispy & the cod was flaky & flavorful without any hint of a "fishy" taste. They give you lots of sauces, including siracha mayo, tater sauce, ketchup & malt vinegar. $14 for a good amount of food...although one take-out box had 3 large pieces of fish, while the other box's pieces were on the small side. If we had only ordered one box & received the one with the small pieces I think we would have felt that it was overall an overpriced dish. This food truck really lives up to all the hype. I only found out about it from a co-worker. Went out to the Northland Kansas City, MO location today and there was even a line before the truck opened. I would say this is the best fish and chips I ever had. The batter was thin and crispy that makes you feel like you are biting into a cloud. The fried batter has just the right amount of consistency to it, not too heavy or too greasy and not too light, it is just right. The fish tastes very fresh and makes you feel like you are at a remote sea-side fish shack in the Pacific Northwest. The portions are surprisingly huge for each fish piece, one order of 3-pieces will easily make most people feel full. The fries are just so-so, but the fish is where it is at. I looked into a lot of other reviews on Yelp and Google, and with some of the negative comments about the tipping and slow wait times are true to an extent. With the tipping, they do ask you politely to contribute after you pay, by providing a choice 15%/25% on the screen, but if you don't want to tip, you can easily click on Custom Tip and add 0, so there is a quick way out of it as well if you look closely to the options. With the long wait times, they cook everything at the time of the order, so only about 3-4 boxes can be fried up at a time. I was part of the first batch when they opened and it did take about 10-15 minutes. So if you come in later behind a line, expect to easily wait more than 30 minutes. They don't post a menu with prices on their website, but today's prices were: fish and chips $15, fish only $13, extra fish piece add-on $4. Overall, I would definitely return again, heck I even got a second order after I finished mine to eat later for dinner. Once we ordered the wait was said to be about 5 to 7 minutes and this was accurate. We all ordered the fish and chips dinner which comes with three pieces of freshly fried cod, french fries, a package of tartar sauce, and a package of sweet chili sauce. You can also ask for malt vinegar if you'd like to have that. Ketchup was included for the french fries. The food was very good and the fish and chips was freshly fried nice and crispy. The fish had a wonderful taste, was firm, flaky and succulent. The coating was crispy yet not as gnarly as I like to have on my fish and chips. The dinner cost $15. Also available at the food truck was soda and chowder. Both credit and debit cards were accepted. This truck comes to Parker on a regular basis, maybe couple of weeks. The food was good enough that will definitely consider returning in the future. After receiving our dinners, we took them to a nearby park to enjoy while it was still hot and fresh. Went to On the Hook Fish and Chips yesterday. I had high hopes but was very disappointed. The fish was okay at best, pieces were small and batter was chewy from being put in a cardboard box and the steam ruined the crispy crust. They should have been wrapped in paper, the classic way to serve them. Fries were great, but the cole slaw was a total rip off. Just shredded cabbage with a very small amount of odd, sweet, non-mayo dressing - terrible. I will never go back. If you want really good fish and chips like you get in the UK, go to the Captian's Corner in Paradise, MO, by Smithville Lake. All of their food is outstanding. read more
