The fish is awesome and the service is fast and friendly. Pay no attention to reviews that subtract stars simply because they ran out of tartar sauce. A food truck can only carry so much and they already state product does run out and to get there as soon as you can to make sure you get what you want. Still the best fish and chips on this side of the pond. Just remember that every business has a bad day. If you happen to be there on that day, please don't just jump into a review that might impact this business in a negative way without giving them a chance to change your mind. Also consider that some customers have more bad luck than others or shouldn't have tried On The Hook in the first place. This food truck serves up some of the absolute best, Fish & Chips. It comes about once a month to the same location in Glen Carbon. It sets up on the far edge of the parking lot for Lowe's, so it is easy to find. Their cod is line caught, not net, which means it is super fresh. Once it is on board the boat, it is cleaned and frozen. Processing it so quickly locks in the flavor. The fish is prepared to order and has a light crisp coating. The flakey cod is hot and steam rolls off of it as you break it with a fork, or bite into the big pieces. The fries are equally as crisp and fresh. I am not a tauter sauce man, but I do like theirs. The lines can be long depending on the time of day you go, but they move quickly and the staff inside the truck is friendly and professional. I like it so much, I go every time they are in town. This food truck rolls in frequently throughout the year. The cod is always fresh out of the fryer and enough for lunch. Grab their clam chowder or new cod cakes to fill up. The cod cakes are 5 mini fish fried fish balls. They would be a good kid (1-4 year old) lunch as they are similar to fish sticks. The fries are a go to and I could eat them alone just for a snack! The crew is always so friendly and love to tell you about their travels and which sauces to mix and try to enhance your meal experience. I love fish however we were none too impressed with the portions of the filets. A normal cod filet is between 6-8 ounces and the ones we got didn't come close to that. It almost appears that the filets were cut in half or smaller. The batter is good if it's not more than the actual fish. When we last visited the truck, we purchased 3 fish and chips meals and asked for malt vinegar for all 3. We received ONE packet for each meal of '3 filets'. The fries were good though. With the rise in cost and getting less portions, I doubt we'll be back any time soon unless they start making the meals appropriate for the charge. Oh well, it was good while it lasted. The fish at this truck has always been hot and fresh! It has good flavor and is truly one of my favorite places for fried fish. They do not have lemon that is my biggest complaint lol they can be a bit stingy with ketchup but that is when they are at their busiest so I always make sure to pack up what I like with fish and bring it along. We also usually stop at McDonald's and get a fountain drink as their drinks are not fountain drinks. The service is yes fast, but that is acceptable on their busiest of times because they don't precook your food, it is cooked when you order it so the food is always piping hot. If you want to eat here, find an alternate place to get your beverage. So now for the food. The fries are great, coated fries, crispy, and hot. Comes with malt vinegar and ketchup. There is also a sweet dipping sauce that I did not use. You get 3 large pieces of fish. Crispy coating but does not overpower the fish. White fish that is fresh and does not taste 'fishy'. An older gentleman asked a few questions about their sourcing and if this was actually Alaska cod--the employee laughed nervously and said, yes to everything. Not very convincing..lol. For the price point, I would expect a larger serving of fries and another piece of fish (=4). Competitors in area serve larger sections of cod for $5-7 less per meal. The batter starts to go more tempura style, which is fairly bland and lacks any punch of seasoned flavor. Fries: These are like a double fry exterior fry, that are some ok, even decent, pre-fab fry product (from Sysco or some other food supplier). Are they the likes of a great fresh-cut fry? Not at all. Cost: See the pic of (3) smaller fish fillets and fries. That is $15. Served out of a food truck in a styrofoam container. Conclusion: The food is marginally ok at best. It isn't anything worth seeking out as "Oh, this is really good". And you certainly won't think: "Oh, this is some special food fish". This was my first time at a food truck, so if there's something going on with them, I'm probably not the one to ask. We went to the food truck this week, got there at 10:57, three minutes before they were supposed to open. They were having some kind of trouble and didn't open the window until 11:14. We got three very modest size fish pieces that cost $14. I've paid that much for good cod before, so that didn't bother me any. It was good, but I've had just as good at Grand Slam in High Ridge, Missouri, and better at Schottie's on Lindbergh-- both were cheaper with much bigger portions. The french fries were delicious, but I would consider it a small order and they were an outrageous $7. The coleslaw, with an Asian dressing, was also delicious. The serving size was so embarrassingly small--four bites--that its $3 price tag was just short of highway robbery. We also got a bottled root beer, which I think cost around seven dollars. Our entire bill was just shy of $30. Again, my knowledge of food trucks is very limited, so maybe this is a normal experience price-wise at one. Fish and chips were not super greasy and were very hot hot hot right outta the fryer. all cooked beautifully and crisp not soggy. Appreciate they put everything in grease absorbing thick recycled cardboard containers and not styrofoam. this helps it not get soggy if you drive your food home. they sell Chowder as a special. (look on papers posted in windows for special items off menu!) and also sell drinks like bottled sodas. $15 for the fish and chips. option to buy just fish or chips or add more of either. tatar sauce, vinegar and ketchup provided in each meal. I wish I could give this place a better review but the truth is I am just not loving it. My in-laws in Dallas told me about this place, as On The Hook moves around and the Dallas metro are is one of their stops, so I decided to give it a try while they were in Springfield, MO. Unfortunately I found the fish to be much too overwhelming for me. It sort of reminded me of the Van de Kamps fish sticks I used to eat as a kid. Remember those? The fries were off the hook however, so that's the good news. I prefer a good catfish above all else, so maybe my tastes are just less refined than others. My wife loved it much like her parents. The main reason for the low rating was the slowness of the truck. We arrived at 6:15 expecting to leave by 7, but instead we got met with a 2 hour line/wait time for our food. When we got the food it was not only dry, but also unseasoned. It had no flavor, and was definitely not worth our time or money (we spent $25 each and tipped). If this was a review only about the fish, it would be a 5. The fish is incredibly good, but the wait times can be extremely long. Shortest wait I have had was 25 minutes. Longest was 45 minutes. In one case it was almost 20 minutes until I was able to order because the two workers can only do so much. Bottom line is that the customer experience would be miles better off if they had an app to order with and it showed your spot in the wait line.
