I moved to New York 5 years ago and found a barber shortly after who became my go-to guy, until he chose to retire in January. He moved to Long Island to set up a barbershop there and while I was happy to see him live out his dream of opening up his own shop, his decision to move had now left me without a barber. I spent the past month scouring through Yelp reviews to try and find a new barbershop until a friend of mine who recently moved to the East Village recommended On the Mark. I walked in on a Wednesday and immediately noticed that this was different than most other barbershops I'd been to in the past. The clean decor, chill vibe, and hip-hop music playing in the background - it was clear that the owner invested into making this a comfortable environment for both the customers and barbers alike. Upon entering I was asked if I had an appointment, I mentioned that I was a walk-in and was told to have a seat. After a minute or two, I got introduced to Izze and he asked me a little about myself. While conversing with Izze, he asked me what kind of haircut I was looking for, to which I responded with a 1-3 fade on the side and a little off the top - my standard haircut request. He seemed like a cool guy and while talking I noticed that he was always paying attention to where he was cutting, even while making conversation. The atmosphere in the barbershop was relaxed, with the barbers making quips at each other in between cuts. As customers were waiting towards the front, they were treated to a selection of alcoholic beverages with whiskey, vodka, and beers in the mix. The haircut itself was done in about 30 minutes with Izze checking in every few minutes to get my opinion on the length off the top, whether I wanted a beard trim, style in the back (natural/square/round), etc. At the end of everything he showed me how it looked from the back and sides to make sure I was happy with the cut. I gave an approving nod and paid up front at the register after withdrawing from the conveniently located ATM in the back. I went back home, took a shower, and my fiancé mentioned that this was one of the best haircuts I had gotten in the last few months. With that, I found my new go-to barber Izze. read more

First time here and overall had a very poor experience. Barber got angry at me multiple times for trying to communicate what I wanted. Don't come here if you value a barber willing to work with you, they definitely didn't do that with me. I came in with long hair, I don't get cuts often so I come prepared with precise photos of front and sides so that they know exactly what I want. They asked me to elaborate further in words, so I did my best though I assumed photos should communicate most of it. The barber wasn't satisfied with my verbal description, he actually got angry at me telling me I'm wasting his time because I don't know what an undercut is. Instead a good barber would take the opportunity to explain what it is while using the pictures to guide the cut. The resulting cut didn't look like the pictures. Next time I'll be going to a place that CALMY and ATTENTIVELY works with the customer to get their desired result. Instead of getting angry. This place seems to value getting customers in and out quickly over providing quality experience. If they tell you you're a waste of their time, they're a waste of your time and you shouldn't spend your money there. read more

I had to wait for my appointment despite it being early in the day because my barber was late, and someone else had to wait for his appointment because his barber was already behind schedule despite it being right after opening. Overall (4/5): A comfortable, open barber shop with attentive barbers who give a good, clean cut at ~$30. Ask for Mark or Roman. Service (4/5): initially I was skeptical because Roman kept on switching the TV channels and would walk off to talk with someone else in the middle of my cut, but he became much more attentive and focused as he got to the more important aspects of my hair. Quality (4/5): Gave pretty simple instructions of a 1-fade on sides and back and trim up top and was not disappointed. Very clean cut and not a strand of stray hair was missed. Not the most impressive haircut I've been given but certainly great quality. Atmosphere (5/5): Really great open space with comfortable chairs and clean. Unique Factor (3/5): They seem to really care about giving you a good haircut and experience, asking throughout the cut whether it is what you like and if it's the preferred length etc. Like some other places they provide a drink if you so choose. Value (4/5): At $26 for a regular cut plus tip this isn't a super cheap cut and I would have expected some better walk-in service for the price.
