I have been coming to Tuft for several months now. Tucked away on a quiet stretch of Stanton, off of Bowery in the LES, sits this relaxed, low frills barber shop. They have an easy to use online booking and payment system. I like to set a haircut appointment so I don't have to sit and wait in a long queue on a Saturday afternoon. The staff is friendly and you can sip a Presidente beer while you get a haircut (they do beards, too). Pasting this review (with some edits) from my review for Freeman's Barber. Most of the barbers from there are currently at this popup. There are two type of people; the first like to get their haircuts without anyone talking to them and are in and out of the chair relatively quickly. The second kind of people are those that want their barbershop to feel more home-y and don't mind conversing with their barber and the other barbers in the shop. This place is most definitely for the latter. If you don't want to talk, your barber will respect that but the overall experience would be enhanced if you participated in the banter. Now on a more personalized level, I gotta give a shoutout to Josh. Don't get me wrong, the other cats cut hair amazingly well. Everyone here is very talented. But, most of them are good with straight hair. I have hair that closer to the curly end of the curly-wavy spectrum. I've had a hard time finding someone who can properly cut my hair and style it. Josh is absolutely amazing. I've never left the chair with any complaints. He's even a dope dude, to boot. I prefer to do my shaves myself because I'm very particular about my beard, through no fault of anyone here. Alright, first of all, this is a $55 haircut (for guys). Let's just get that out of the way, because I don't think any of the other reviews mentioned that. There are no prices anywhere in the room and one time I went there and the guy didn't even give me a receipt or anything to sign so I had no idea how much I'd paid until I got home. Secondly, this place is very much the white hipster equivalent of a black barbershop, where there's sports or the radio on and the barbers are always shooting the shit about something that's happening. Service is a little slow. Having said that, what does $55 get you? Well, you sit down and the barber will ask you how you want your haircut- and if you don't know, they'll figure it out with you. They'll make suggestions that they think work best for you. Basically, at every point they'll ask you to specify something - and if it seems like you're not totally sure, they'll gently guide you towards what you think is best. They'll explain your options and discuss how to style your hair and what will be easiest to take care of. They'll give you the headrub and the straight razor shave on your nape and all the other little trimmings. I came here with a general idea of what I wanted (short, pulled back and to the left) and left with a different fade on the sides and a different shape to my hair that I love. So should you get a $55 haircut? It's probably not worth it if you know exactly what you want and you just need a technician to get it there. But if you're even slightly uncertain about what to do with your hair and want someone to walk you through it (or you just want to feel like you've stepped into some Mad Men set piece and be treated like it) you could do much worse than Tuft. read more

Mr. Natty creates a sleek look for women. I went in for a trim and touch up color and he gave me an awesome medium length cut and did color magic that made me look 10 years younger. Bret's been my barber since 2010, ever since I popped in to FSC on Horatio after a harrowing experience with another longtime barber elsewhere. Bret fixed my haircut, and I've been loyal since then, following him around to Freeman/Rivington, to the Tuft pop-up, and now this location. Finding someone to cut anyone's hair is full of anxiety, but I always get a little extra given my super straight and thick Asian hair that makes me look like a Chia Pet without product. Bret's fades are the best I've ever had. And the cuts grow out well until I'm due for another (~3 weeks). He's super communicative and is a consummate professional with exacting standards. I never walk away feeling like something more could be done or something shouldn't have been done. As for other barbers, I can't speak directly to them. All I can say is everyone looks really good and super content on their way out. This brand new location is the best shop I've experienced. I think most people appreciate comfort details geared towards the clients, which this place has: comfortable chairs, room to place your belongings, beverages, hot towels, friendly staff, music. But I appreciate even more the level of attention the owner paid to building the stations, lighting, and overall design that makes it an ideal work environment for the barbers and their skill. Having somewhat thick and course hair, it has always been a challenge to find a barber that understood how to cut and style my hair type. After leaving many barbershops throughout Manhattan unsatisfied, I did some research and decided to book with Mr. Natty at the former Freemans Barbershop. Mr. Natty listened to the frustrations I had with my previous haircuts and spent the time cutting and styling my hair to how I had always wanted. I never felt like I was getting a 'one size fits all' kind of cut or being rushed for the next appointment (he usually is fully booked for a given day, so book ahead online/over the phone). Fast forward two and a half years and many haircuts later, Mr. Natty is still the only barber I even consider. After a recent change in ownership/management at Freemans Barbershop, all of the former barbers moved to the new, just around the corner, Tuft Barbershop. And when you find a barber who knows exactly how to cut your hair without you even having to say a thing, you follow them wherever they go. Formerly known as Freeman's barber, this is the same motley crew of total clowns. I went to them for ~1 year as they were the closest place. They do a fine job of cutting hair, but it isn't worth putting up with them. The regular guys cutting hair are perfectly nice, but the "partners" are generally obnoxious. The biggest issue is that they were late for every single appointment I had for a year. Always at least 15 minutes, but often more. The straw that finally broke the camels back was after they moved to their new location on Bowery. I checked in and sat down. 50 minutes later my barber is done with his prior client's hair. They call me over to the host stand and they asked "did you check in?" I obviously had and they had seen me sitting there for 50 minutes. The guy cutting my hair tried to blame it on the host and then said "damn man I was just back there shooting the shit." I immediately walked out and started going to fellow barber read more

Okay, I just had a haircut with Mr. Natty and I have to say he ruined my day. First off he had a client right before me and clients hair was all over the floor and some on a chair and he told me to sit on it. I said, don't you want to clean up first and he said yeah I can blow some hair off. Which he did with a blow drier, but left all the hair on the floor. Then I showed him my picture of my previous haircut and said that this is what I want. After he finished, he didn't ask me whether I like it or not and ripped off the apron, I put my glasses on to see what I have got and I wasn't happy with the length of my hair on the sides, so I asked him to make it shorter, His reply was that that wasn't what was on the picture and that my picture is a shitty picture... literally what he said (great customer service). I said that picture was a general idea of what I want and I if I want sides shorter I want them shorter, also he should have asked me if I am happy before taking the apron off. Instead of admitting his mistake he just kept pushing back, just making it worse. Eventually we got there with the haircut but mood was ruined and I have very bitter after taste after this visit. I am sure I am not the first and not the last person he treats like that, but I view it unacceptable and I am definitely not going back. I had three haircuts from this guy, all of them were good, but this visit just showed how unprofessional this person is and he has a lot to learn how to do a good customer service instead of just being brut. read more
