A truly fun place just a short stroll from our hotel. We came off of our first day on the Rocky Mountaineer and made our way to this shop for a quick and light dinner. We were told that the food is consistently good and it come with a great restaurant vibe. We ate outside with lots of other people enjoying the many TV sets. Our very friendly server came over to the table to bring us menus and take a drink order. Our server was too kind and really help make it our visit there special. So full disclosure, the restaurant we walked to had closed earlier than advertised due to our Covid friend. I may have entered this establishment not in the finest frame of mind. Our server was prompt and friendly in her greeting as we sat down. Covid killer at the entry but no masks on the staff, which is the first time we have encountered that. We discovered upon heading back to our room that it's mandated for both staff and patrons next Monday the 28th. We ordered waters and martinis. Martini's came pretty quick, but water did not. Asked for water again and were kept topped up pretty much for the balance of our visit. The lovely K got her beef fix with a steak sandwich and salad, for me a halibut and chips with the fries. The place wasn't that busy nor everyone ordering food. K's steak sandwich was very good, and cooked to her preference. The salad was obviously out of a bag because there were a ton of stems in the mixed greens. The bread was tasty, but the topping was cold and obviously sitting. My fish was a little overcooked, and the portion seemed a little weak. What killed for me, was the salt on the fries, they were inedible. Even K who loves salt was "they are way too salty!". Our server did not check in after the runner dropped our food. I ate the fish while it was hot as well as the slaw, which appeared uninspired. The tartar sauce was equally pedestrian for the cost. When our server came to take the plate away with maybe five fries eaten she didn't ask if there was an issue. K spoke up and said by the way, the fries were inedible because of the ridiculous amount of salt. She didn't say much but did ask if I wanted more (we had already finished eating) but I don't want a side of fries after I've eaten my protein that's why we order a dish not an item. I get that this Covid thing is challenging for our food service industry, but this surprised me. When we got our bill we were given a 20% discount on my meal amounting to $3.20! Why bother. All in all, pretty disappointing, we won't be providing another chance. read more

Good atmosphere here. Service was a bit spotty due to staff shortages and the Rocky being in town. It took about 15 minutes to get menus. Other tables were getting them faster but once we caught the server's eye all was good. They weee out of fish. So no review on the fish and chips. The soup was supposed to be roasted red pepper. When it came, it was chock full of ground beef. The server took it away and it was replaced with a side salad. Excellent salad. Should have ordered that in the first palace. Pretty nice pub, friendly front end staff. Kind of picky and a clubhouse sandwich connoisseur. Their clubhouse sandwich is actually a turkey/ham sandwich as they only use 2 slices of bread.(like 90% of restaurants out there) :( . We were staying at the Wingate just down the road from Ontherocks. The hotel has a deal with the pub for a buy one get one 50% off. We went there 2 nights out of 3 the first experience was awesome we were able to get our pre arranged special no problem. The second time however there was an issue with the pub stating that the deal only applied to appetizers. We asked to see the manager and JACKIE showed up... my goodness the attitude she brought with her could of burned the pub down!! Our server, our food and our drinks for the evening were all great but JACKIE turned it all bad! This woman should not be leading anybody let alone have control of a business for that time. Just another generic pub. Usual collection of burgers, sandwiches, wraps, salads. Good variety of food but nothing exciting. The club sandwich was fine. As were the fries. Just - boring. The beer list was absolutely awful. No craft beer at all. Just macro Molson products. Blah. Lots of TVs if you want to be distracted and watch sports. First time visiting after they re-opened due to Covid closure. I had wings on wing night, Wed. They were big juicy and lukewarm. They tasted ok, the hot were not really hot, the lemon butter, not that lemony. Caesar salad was enjoyable. They attempt to do the social distancing and Covid preventative measures but I'd say not that great at practicing it. Menus I've noticed are not cleaned before a waitress picks them up and delivers to another table. They don't tell patrons to leave all they're dishes and beer glasses at the table for busboy to pick up, instead I see both patrons and serving staff touching other patrons dishes, so always contaminating. Went this pub as it was close to our hotel. Was fairly busy, and very noisy. Not a great selection of beers on tap if you, like me, prefer local craft beer. Ordered the steak sandwich, which was the special for the night. Took a little longer to arrive than we normally like. Steak was pretty small, but for $11.95 it was fine. Nicely seasoned and one was cooked properly, the other a little more well done than requested. Sides of fires and salad were fine. Service a bit slow tonight. We stayed at the Wingate for 3 nights. They suggested we visit 'on the rocks ' pub as it was 50% off a second dinner item. First nite we missed happy hour by 10 minutes. We were told it ended at 5. And as there were 5 of us, the waitress split our bills and gave 50 % off each of 4 four meals. Next nite we went to 'shark club' and had a great evening with lots of Happy hour drinks and food. Great night! Day three we decided to forgo drinks on the golf club patio, go back to the hotel and shower and go back to 'on the rocks' before 5 for happy hour because we had such a good time nite one. Sadly we discovered there is no weekend Happy Hour at this pub but that didn't stop us. We had drinks and appies and more drinks, a bottle of wine and 4 dinners. Our waitress Kelsey was young and very pleasant. We had told her we all had room cards for 50% off. A second meal. When our bill came, we only received 50% each off our appetizers. She said that's what she was told. I asked to speak to a manager and 'Jackie' came over. We told her we didn't think it was right to get the half off the appies only. She angrily told us that was the rules and that we were only supposed to get one off per table not one per couple. My husband said that was chintzy and she then started berating us telling us a little bit of politeness would be nice and that there were people whose houses were burning and that was more important (or something to that effect. ). She said she we would change the bill, but she was not happy about it. We paid and when we left I calmly told Jackie I had been in bombed in management for 32 years and that she should not be a manager. My friends said much the same and she snapped back that her family was being evicted (we think she meant evacuated) and my friend said 'then you shouldn't be here working'. She snapped again and said she couldn't afford not to work. Not once were we impolite or rude or raised our voices. It was totally unacceptable and put a damper on our great evening. We spent about $300 between the 4 of us so we were not just fly by nite people. I'm sadly disappointed in this person. I understand she was under extreme stress but she should not take it out on customers. We were embarrassed by her actions. She needs proper training. read more

We came in on a Thursday night at 9:30...still half full. Our server Carly was great. Friendly, prompt, moved quickly, cared. My gf and I ordered the special double long islands for $6.50. Good deal. They were delicious. We went for share plates tonight. Food report card: - wings...crispy, juicy, great flavours: lemon pepper and ginger soy. Grade A - crispy shrimp....perfect cooked and seasoned. The cocktail sauce was a little extra horseradishy...we loved them. Grade A on the shrimp and sauce - soup: roasted tomato and potato purée....texture from the potato purée a little strange which also toned down a great flavour. They should've left it a cream-based soup with chunks of potato would've been better. Grade B - cherry cola ribs...not for us but not terrible . Grade C. All the other servers that brought out food and picked up our dishes were friendly and great. It wasn't perfect and normally pubs are not. But i'd still give it a five.
