I honestly didn't have huge expectations at first, but On Yuen completely surprised me -- the food was SO good. It's a small, family-run restaurant with that classic mom-and-pop feel, and you can really taste the quality in everything. We ordered the salted pepper fish, almond chicken, chow mein, and fried rice, and every single dish was on point. The flavors were rich, fresh, and cooked perfectly. My boyfriend mentioned the portions used to be bigger back in the day, but honestly, the quality more than makes up for it. The food is still generous and definitely top tier. We were introduced to On Yuen a couple years ago by friends in our townhouse complex that have been loyal customers for about 30 years. Lately we've been getting take-out due to the Corvid virus. A couple times already one family collects orders from others and places 4-5 family orders for one pickup as its a 20 minutes drive. All considered: we look forward to the food, which represents good value and tastes terrific. Plus the family ownership led by Eric and his wife are super friendly and remembering their loyal clientele with any allergies or special taste preferences. We decided to try another Chinese restaurant in the area and ended up here for a late night dinner. First thing I noticed was there was plenty of seating and the restaurant was very clean! Not to mention the odd paint colour choices. We were offered tea and menus right away. We ordered a few items. Sweet and sour chicken strips, beef and onion hot pot and lettuce wrap. The menu is more westernized Chinese food so I ordered food I would normally not eat at most authentic restaurants aka the chicken strips. The kitchen was very generous at cooking with plenty of onions. Our hot pot and minced beef were full of onions. The chicken was my favourite. The batter was nicely fried. I found the minced beef filling for the lettuce wrap a little too crunchy and too much onion for my liking. Service was very good. Our server checked up on us regularly and packed extra rice to go with our leftover food. The take out boxes were the stereotypical Chinese take out boxes and lastly we were given two fortune cookies when paying the bill. The food was a bit pricey at about $50. Terrible quality food at a ridiculous price; I paid $88.00 for this. I ordered take out today and this is what I received. My order: *Stir fry rice - Doesn't look like stir fry it looks like white rice with egg. Taste gross! *Stir fry vegetable lo mein - The noodle where over saturated in the sauce, hardly any vegetable but broccoli. *Veggie egg rolls - They are so tiny that 3 of them make one and they are filled with only carrots. *Beef & chinese broccoli with black bean sauce - they gave me regular broccoli. *Chicken balls in sweet & sour sauce - They gave me sweet & sour chicken! * Spicy squid - I have no idea what they gave me. It doesn't look like squid and it has a white coating not sure what it is either look like msg. *Chicken chop suey - again over saturated in sauce hardly any veggie and no bean sprouts. *Sweet & sour pork - that's the only item they got right. The chef is so lazy and not even stirring our deep fried dishes with the spice and garlic. We received 5 boxes of different deep fried dishes with the spices and garlic placed by the bottom on all boxes and the deep fried tasteless and bland. So disappointed. read more

This review is for takeout. The prices are decent but the takeout portions were so tiny! We ordered 5 dishes, there were 4 of us eating & there wasn't a piece of rice or noodle left in any of the containers. We always have leftovers! The food was just okay. I would say mall food court quality. Everything was super greasy! I wonder if we ate in the restaurant if the portions would have been bigger, because the photos from Urban spoon looked way better than what we had. If i could give a half star I would upgrade it to a 2.5 based on the very friendly lady who took the order on the phone. Still great food but the prices seems to go up for $5 every year for the family dinner so it's getting quite expensive to eat here! If you're looking at the menu I posted add at least $5 to the family combo dinners prices. When we started going here a few years ago the Dinner for 3 was $39, then $42, the menu I have on my fridge says $47 but I believe it's outdated and it's actually $51 now! That's a drastic change over less than 4 years. But it's worth it. The best Chinese in the lower mainland as far as I'm concerned. Nothing else comes close. read more

We have been going to On Yuen since they opened their doors almost 30 years ago. The food has been consistent although the portion size had shrunk over the years. It is our go to place whenever we are too tired or too lazy to cook. Eric, Reagan and their staff are always friendly and responsive. Food also arrives quickly to satisfy the hunger. The crab and fish maw soup is delicious, as is their hot and sour soup. The sea bass with garlic hot pot is yummy as well. In fact, I think that I've tried almost every item on the menu and have enjoyed the fare for the most part. Nothing really fancy about the menu selections, but they offer good food that is reasonably priced. read more

Five years ago I would have given this restaurant five stars without hesitation, but in recent years they have only spiralled down in terms of quality food and value. I ordered six dishes and paid $100 after-tax and it was barely enough to feed five people... Think about that for a moment! Six dishes barely feeds five people. Five years ago their to-go containers were a generous size and now it is half the size PLUS they have continuously raised prices over the years. My only hope is that they see this review and realize that there are competitors nearby that offer equally comparable quality food at much cheaper prices and fair value. The overall taste of the food is all right and the owners are very nice people. It's just a shame that they are beginning to gouge people. I have eaten inside here once and have ordered take out a few times. The chicken and cashews was tasty and the hot and sour soup is some of the best I've had. The portions are huge which is typical of Chinese places. Prices are decent too. They are usually fast even on a Friday night. its been 7+ years since the last time i ordered from here, but before i moved away, on yuen had been our "go to" chinese food place for 10+ years. back in town and wanting chinese, i ordered the "dinner for 4" like we used to get, take out. i was shocked when i was told the price, which seems to have nearly doubled, and extremely disappointed to see the portion sizes, which seem to have shrunk by 1/3 to 1/2. the quality of the food isnt where it used to be either. we will not be ordering from here again. read more

Been going to this restaurant for over 20 years. Over the last year, the food quality has got so poor, no taste and portions reduced especially for take outs. Paid over 16 dollars for 8 small pieces of beef and brocolli with large stalks and 4 pices of carrots on a bed of noodles. Total rip off. The other dish was spicy schezuan chicken and brocolli which again had a few pieces of chicken and over loaded with brocolli pieces most of which was the stalks. Tasted more like sweet sauce and no spice poured over the dish. I spoke to the owner Eric who was very reluctant to hear what I had to say, did not apologise or offer to discount the price and just said the next time it will be better. Poor customer service and he clearly was not interested in feedback, just interested in making money. They raised their prices by 30% and made their portions smaller by 30%. Food is good but to expensive. Place used to be packed all the time now it's always empty. Went for dinner here after it was recommended by a friend. It doesn't look like much from the outside and on entering the restaurant the decor colour choices were something to behold. It was very clean with is a big plus. My family was seated quickly and we decided on the dinner for 4 combo. The food was Canadian style Chinese food, and our combo came with pork friend rice, almond chicken, chow mein, sweat and sour pork and beef chop suey. The food was excellent. All the ingredients tasted very fresh, the vegetables were firm and tasty. The BBQ pork in the rice was wonderful. I would like to get a bigger dish of that pork or have some on the noodles and soup. The service was quick and friendly and may have been family run. Overall great fresh food, quick friendly service and a great deal. We'll be back! read more
