This was our first meal when my husband and I landed in Vancouver on recommendation from a colleague. We thoroughly enjoyed the dishes and had great recommendations from our server. We had the bolani which is kind of like a giant aloo parantha - SO good. Crispy, and potatoey goodness. We also tried the kololi which was also super tasty, but definitely not my favorite of the two. Incredible food and the best team working here. My host was a native of Afghanistan and appreciated the attention to detail with all aspects of the menu. This was my first time eating Afghan food and I was blown away. The dishes were flavorful and the staff could not have been more friendly. Great vibe in this restaurant! We sat and were served at an Afghan style table, which was in a separate dining section; this was an interesting experience if you haven't done this before. They do ask if you have allergies, which per what was seen on the menu looked safe, but it is best you do mention anything that doesn't agree with you (There will be some ingredients unfamiliar with Western culture). I wish I could give this place 10 stars. Parking is in a big lot, and be sure to make a reservation. You walk in to warm, delicious, spiceful aromas and gorgeous décor. There are paintings, the walls are painted, lovely drapery, and the lighting is low (but not too low) to create an intimate atmosphere in what is actually a pretty good sized room with tall ceilings. Okay so - the eh part first - service is a tad slow. That's my biggest negative. But once you're seated, it's the friendliest service out there. They're kind, give great advice on dishes. They are pretty attentive when your food/drinks have dropped, but you probably won't be able to respond because your mouth will be full of tantalizing food or drinks. We ordered three drinks and three dishes, and were treated to a complimentary dessert since it was my birthday. We had a Pamir Martini, which is saffronny and strong, the shararah which is like a tequila mojito, and the chasm-e-pista, which is basically pistachio pudding flavor and delectable. For food, we did the banjan, lamb shank, and grilled spice chicken, and we tried both cumin and Afghan rice. The banjan with Afghan rice was my favorite, because a) I'm a sucker for eggplant, and b) it was phenomenal. To me, the Afghan rice is more interesting and tasty, but both are good. That being said, there wasn't a single bit leftover because the lamb was fall-off-the-bone tender and the chicken was juicy and spicy. I will be going back often because I think this is my new favorite place, and I want to try everything on the menu. read more

This is my 3rd time in the restaurant but first time have a large group and we get to sit on the carpeted area on the floor. What a great experience. I personally love it but my husband was like a Humpty Dumpty. I have to say the server was excellent! I've been wanting to try Afghan Kitchen for a while now and we just happen to be in the area so we thought we'd take the chance to try it out. It is so beautiful on the inside and it just feels so welcoming (and has a home feeling). Absolutely gorgeous on the layout and decorations. As for the menu, i am amazed at the variety of foods and the number of items they have on their menu. I love that they have GF and Vegan options available as well. Due to my dairy-free dietary issue, this really helps. I generally love Afghan food so this was a real treat to try out. The portion of the dish we got was actually pretty good and enough for two people. I wasn't a fan of the service. The staff weren't rude or anything - they were friendly and lovely. Just felt they weren't as welcoming compared to the staff at their second restaurant (Zarak on main at in Vancouver). Overall it was a good experience. read more

All I can say is WOW. Wanted to find a good restaurant not too far from the border coming from Seattle, this place was worth every penny. A lot of restaurants nowadays put so much focus into the ambiance and fall short when it comes to food taste/quality. But not this establishment. The food was absolutely incredible and fresh. Dishes ordered: Afghan Nuggets, Bolani, Afghan Chicken, and a mixed assortment of skewers. My favorite was the Afghan Chicken. The only thing I would do different is maybe substitute the rice for some sort of bread. Don't get me wrong, the rice was so flavorful and prepared so well, just felt like dipping some bread into the sauce would have made it PERFECT. For the skewers, all were delicious except for the chicken. It was a bit dry, but again, still had tons of flavor which is why I am still giving 5 stars. Service was a bit slow, only two people serving at least 10-12 different tables. Both servers were super sweet and efficient, but of course, two people can only do so much. The only negative thing to point out is that the restrooms need a major upgrade. It is super outdated and almost feels like it's not the same restaurant. read more

What a fabulous experience eating at Afghan Kitchen! The food was amazing, the service was warm and personal, especially their knowledge of Gluten Free options for those of use with a food allergy. But the coup de grace was eating in their traditional room, where you have to leave your shoes outside! Such a cool vibe! A really wonderful time for my wife and I as we celebrated Mother's Day. The kebabs are so beautifully spiced, and the Afghan rice is a MUST HAVE! Add to that the tasty spinach side dish (which was a GF substitute, but I don't care if I missed out on the potatoes and eggplant!!), and this was an exceptional meal. The environment of this place is so cozy yet fashionable. I really loved the glass mosaic lamps. I really loved the carpeted, cushioned seating area where you and your party can sit on the comfy floor and experience a new way of taking in a meal. A few of us came here for dinner. The place has a great ambience either for date nite or for a get together with friends & family. Their food was delish. Their menu was suitable for all types of diners including vegans, gluten-free, and meat eaters. They even had combo platters. A couple of us thoroughly enjoyed their 'fall off the bone' lamb. I don't even like lamb & it was mouth watering. We ordered the trio dip taster. A great way to sample their dips. We wanted to try everything! We ordered mocktails and dessert. Go for the dairy free pistachio gelato. I couldn't decide what to order and the server was helpful. I had the chicken kebab and found it slightly on the dry side. ( i can drive for food anywhere) The moment u step in , u feel the vibe of middle east with a wall full of paintings of afghan life n portraits of people. Server would take u to ur table and get your order. U do need a moment to go over what all is offered here. Presentation was great. I mean if the food is presented to you nicely, it tastes even better. Afghani rice garnished with dry fruit was good. Chicken kebab was also soft n chewy with minimal spices so if u want extra hot then let them know. Ur preference would be asked again and again n after regular intervals ur glass of water would be refilled . Too many take away food orders are also taken care of at the same time . Our desert was the highlight of our meal. Nothing fancy but sweet and tasty. Clean washrooms and utencils win a point from me coupled with good interaction from servers. This place is located adjacent to the Canadian Superstore. Parking is easy to find. When we visited on a Sunday afternoon, we were promptly seated by the host and the waitress came over and took our order soon after. We tried the bolani and the lamb shank. The bolani was 3-stars for me since I found it to be a tad too greasy. Also, the filling of potatoes and spices were a bit underwhelming. The lamb shank, on the other hand, was spectacular. For drinks and dessert, we tried the chai tea and mom's secret (a cake reminiscent of tres leches), respectively. Both were delicious. In terms of ambiance, it was very unqiue and captivating. One thing of particular note is that the restaurant has large murals of Afghans going about their daily lives painted on the walls. I found it to be in stark contrast to the food was that consumed at the restaurant. I drove about 150 miles to try their food today. And it was worth it. We had to eat takeout because we had the dog in the car so obviously thats a different experience than normal. Had the Balani, the Qorma, the Mantu, and the Steak Skewer. The Balani is a gift from the gods. Growing up around Europeans, they are so familiar but so special and perfectly made. I wasn't expecting a pizza box for this dish but I kept wanting more. Please get this. Everything else was good but not mind blowing. The Mantu are an acquired flavor for sure. I got the Lamb Shank for $15 and Afgan bread. We also shared the Bolani. On top, I also had a spoon of the Firni dessert. Wow the lamb shank was a full size lamb served with Afgan rice, potatoes and veggies. It was very delicious and it was super filling. B and I didn't need to order the Afgan bread to share. The Bolani was ok. It was not my favorite dish. The firni dessert was very yummy. It was light and perfect for a small after dinner treat. Service here was awesome. The servers came over couple times to see how we were doing and to top up our water. Afghan is located in South Surrey/ White Rock. There are plenty of free parking out in front. Came to South Surrey for a night out with a girl friend and we were originally supposed to do take out and go out for a movie but we winded up doing a later dinner instead. We tried to see if we could go to The Keg at Morgan Crossing, right by my friend's place, but was told it was over a hour wait. We called up Afghan Kitchen, which we've been to before, and they said it was only a 20 minute wait so off we went. It was BUSY when we got there! So busy we barely got through the front door as there were a few larger groups waiting for their tables. It took awhile for them to get our name and inform us how long the wait would be but all in all, it was about a 30 minute wait from arrival to getting a table. For a Saturday night for Chinese New Year and Dine Out, it wasn't bad. We got to seat in the cushion area where no shoes are allowed. Only the $25 or $35 Dine Out menu was given to us but a large female party, seated next to us, seemed to have gotten the regular menu to order from as well. Both my friend and I decided to do the $25 Dine Out menu - I got the eggplant dip with bread, lamb qorma with rice, and pink tea as dessert. It was a bit weird that tea would be their dessert offering so my friend and I both asked for the tea right away as the milk pudding, the other dessert option, we tried before and neither of us were a big fan of their version of the pudding. Our food and tea came out incredibly quickly and all of it was tasty. I really enjoyed the cold eggplant dip, it was one of the best I ever had! The lamb qorma was tasty with lots of chunks of meat on it along with a generous helping of rice. Both my friend and I couldn't finish our mains and had to get it packed to go. The Pink tea tasted quite similar to chai. It wasn't very flavourful and nothing special. Our favourite part of the evening was a belly dancer and that was highly entertaining especially with her working the crowd and coming out in a cloak filled with sparkling lights. Overall, I still much prefer Afghan Horseman in Granville Island over Afghan Kitchen but they are in two completely different neighborhoods. read more

Came by for a group dinner. Parking is plentiful in the strip mall parking lot. Staff were super friendly. The place a true family business. Run by 4 siblings and their mother (and possibly others). The interior is very modern. This is a new building after all. The place is split into 2 sections. There's the normal dining area, as well as a carpeted "no shoes" area (I'm guessing this is more the traditional method). By coincidence, the dinner was early enough that we qualified for Happy Hour (1500-1800). This is by far the best time to go, as they have $15 mains. Pricing for the other dishes is quite reasonable, at under $20 for most dishes. Bolani - potato pancake. Quite filling. Slightly crispy on the outside. Fresh and hot. Mantu - beef dumplings with yogurt on top. Reminds me of dim sum, though the ingredients are obviously different. Not the cheapest, but worth ordering. I could eat these all day. Lamb shank - covered in tomato sauce, served with salad and Afghan rice and chopped vegetable "salad" (reminds me of pico de gallo but not spicy). The plate was completely full. This is a really good deal. Quite tasty, though I ended up pouring some hot sauce on top. Definitely worth eating here. My friends and I left happy. Recommended. read more

I don't visit the area often, but when I do, I'd like to explore a little bit. My friend and I decided to try this place which was just opened a year ago. It's in a nice plaza with lots of new shops and restaurants. This place got a very nice decor inside. It has a lounge area where people can sit on the carpeted area, also some a few booth places with tables and chairs. We were seated right away as it wasn't very busy. Our waiter pored us some water right away, and explained the menu with details. He was also very patient to answer our questions, which was really helpful for us to understand the menu. We decided to order a meat platter to share since it's our first time here. The portion was very generous and we ended up taking home a portion for both of us. The platter's name was Meeting in Kabul, which comes the with two chicken thighs, two beef Kabul patties and one chicken kebab. We also had a choice to order either Afghan rice or rice with cumin. Spinach sauce with some chopped vegetables were also plated. We really enjoyed the flavor of the meal, however, the sauce on top of the beef Kabul patties were on the saltier side, and it was spicy which I didn't expect. But the chicken thighs were well cooked and marinated, and the chicken kebab were also cooked well and flavorful. My overall experience was very good with this restaurant. I've come to Afghan Kitchen a few different times, but all for media events so I wasn't able to review them. However, I finally dined in on my own a few weeks ago, and as usual, I loved every minute of it. This family owned restaurant has won numerous awards since they opened a few years back, including being featured on numerous Yelp's Top 50 Restaurants in Greater Vancouver lists. So it comes as no surprise that it gets a 5-star rating from me. The restaurant is located in a large plaza in South Surrey with plenty of parking outside. The restaurant itself is spacious, with plenty of natural lighting, tables, decked out in beautiful decor, and a traditional sitting room towards the entrance of the restaurant. If you have the opportunity, dine in their traditional sitting room. You'll need to remove your shoes before entering, and you get to enjoy your meal sitting criss cross apple sauce on top of pillows and cushions. Be warned: after dining here, it is easy to curl up in a ball and become one with the pillows due to a food coma. I've tried numerous things from here with the the triple dip taster, bolani, and from the field veggie platter being my favourite. Afghan cuisine does not shy away from the flavour and spices and every dish I have tried has been jam packed with just that. Each bite is an explosion of saucy flavour. You can't go wrong with anything from here. On top of amazing food, the service is top tier.
