The service was not bad. I gave 4 target bags of clothes nicely folded. Most of my clothes were of my daughter's clothes she never got to use and most had price tags still on them. The ones with no tags they didn't take them I don't know why? They took all the crocs I had. My clothes weren't stained or severely worned out but I don't get why they didn't take all 4 bags fully. I got back soo many clothes. I did receive a decent amount of $$ for the ones they took. I will come back but since I don't live in NJ when I'm in the area I will bring more clothes. read more

Very run down. The clothes they sell aren't in good condition. They pass on great condition name brand clothes. They don't have any bamboo. Said the wait would be 45 minutes to sell things. I have been coming here for years now and is one of my favorite places to go with my kids and have never had an issue until today. I went in around 2 bought some items left and went next door to the thrift store for adults , ended up going back after because I needed a specific color shirt for my daughter . I stood in a long line line for about 10 minutes get to the register to be told that I couldn't use my discover card, but I quickly explained that I just had used it and the person took it without issue and didn't say anything, and also said at the time I did not have another card on me . Well the manager did not seem to care and said well he wasn't supposed to and there was nothing they can do. Terrible customer service she could have atleast said hey just this last time but please in the future now you know. But to just deny service like it didn't matter and not be understanding , because it is not like they have a sign posted saying they don't accept discover cards. It was ridiculous , my husband did come in and purchase the item using Apple Pay but it was with the same discover card. It is inconsiderate to just deny service and not have any signs or warning to customers, not sure if I will be back and for sure will let others know . read more

PROS: this is a great discount kids store. They have toys, games, books, dvds, and clothing mostly based for children. The prices are good compared to retail stores and the staff is super nice. Do not sell your stuff here! I brought many high quality and clean large toys, unwrapped toys, books and clothes here and got next to nothing for them. I got twice the amount from the Once Upon a Child in Scarsdale, NY for a similar amount and quality of items. Great place to buy gently used clothes for kids. Items mostly range from $3.50 - 7.50. You're not going to be thrilled selling here, but if you manage your expectations, you won't be disappointed. The process can be long. After checking in your items (2 bags max), you are placed on a queue behind those who checked in before you. Designated staff inspect and select items they want to buy, and then forward to another staff who prices them. You receive 25% of the item's selling price. This means you receive about 90 cents - $1.90 per item on average. You might feel outraged and indignant at this point, but please consider the margin. 25% goes to you. 25% goes to paying staff. 25% overhead (paying rent and materials like receipt paper, tags, etc.). That leaves 25% business profit. Maybe 35% if you want to liberally assess. The point is: they're not "ripping you off." There's a reason why most people say this is a great bargain place to buy; their sale prices are commensurate to their buying prices. For every 10 items you sell, you get enough money to buy 2 or 3 items in return. Major drawback to this business is the long wait times to sell (30 - 90 minute waits). I find it impossible to spend more than 30 minutes shopping in that tiny store, even if I patiently scan every rack, there's only so many times you can walk the aisles repeatedly. Waiting in the car for over an hour just to make $20 - $40 isn't worth my time, and that's if they select your items. If you're lucky, selling takes only 30 minutes, just enough time for you to shop and buy some things with the money you made. On unlucky days you'll wait for 90 minutes just to find that they want to buy $10 worth of your items, then you'll have to drive back thinking, wtf did I just spend my whole morning/afternoon doing!?! read more

Inconsistent pricing. The first time I went here, I got a fair compensation for the items kept by the store. I decided to return, same brand clothing,, same level of wear, the store kept more pieces but I was compensated half of what I got the first time. It feels like it all depends on who is evaluating your clothing. Which is frustrating because it can be a long process and there is no factually sound way to demonstrate the inconsistency. Great store a lot of great inventory for children of all ages. Staff is very nice and cordial. I brought in a lot of infant shoes, sneakers and summer sandals and they pretty much took them all. I bought my daughter two brand new holiday pajamas and a beautiful holiday dress and only spent 20 bucks. The only downfall was the mega blocks of thomas the train and friends which was showing on the box were missing all of the items of the characters. I won't be buying toys there again. Overall, it was an ok experience visiting this store. Also if dropping off to sell on a Saturday make sure to go at 10am exactly it gets really crowded after 11am to shop and sell. read more

I spent the weekend consigning at a local twice yearly consignment called Whoo Consigns. It was easy, you price your own items, you pay a small consigning fee, I think I did pretty well. Now I have all nice quality items (I was even complimented on my maternity wardrobe when dropping off my items). All in very good condition. Whatever I had left over I thought I'd consign with once upon a time. Thank goodness I didn't just show up as the website says. I called ahead. They told me there not taking any boys clothes 5t and under and pretty much nothing else. Things have to be basically new, no character shirts, etc.. Hello! I thought this was a consignment shop! I will not sell here nor shop here. Plenty other places to go. If you want to consign..seriously look into Whoo Consigns...so much better, friendlier, and more profitable if you have things in good condition. read more

Selling clothes to a second hand children's thrift shop isn't my first rodeo; I know you aren't going to get TOP dollar for the items you go in to sell. But you do want to be compensated accordingly, and Once Upon A Child does NOT do that. They will gladly accept your barely worn clothes and offer $1-$3. And this is $3 on a barely worn Guess coat, $1 on Jordan sneakers. I probably will never take my clothes back to this place; I rather give them to the Church for free, if all I'm going to get is $3 max. I take the money I make from my sales; and put the money into my children's savings or re-invest in clothes. $3 is barely going to be the tax on a new coat. This store is amazing. I'm not big into used clothing, but this store changed my mind. Every piece of clothing I looked at was in nearly new to mint condition. I imagine they must be very choosy when buying clothes. I appreciated that as I was going through racks and racks of clothes. I really did not have to inspect anything as it was all in great condition. The store is excellently arranged; very organized, clean, and easy to navigate. I was impressed with the selection both in quality as well as quantity. I will definitely be back when visiting my friends in New Jersey and I am thrilled to know there is A Once Upon a Child a few hours from me here in California. I will definitely be checking it out and hope that it is as wonderful as the Fairfield, NJ store. read more

you need to watch the employee like a hawk when they ring out. I specifically notice that the underarmour clothing has an alarm sensor on it. I asked the cashier that checking me out to remove the alarm sensor. and when I got home it was still attached! i went to the store to get it removed they will not remove it. the owner says how do i know you didnt buy it from macys?!. well if i bought it from macys i will go there duh! they are rude and not customer oriented. they can keep their used clothing. read more

The last time I consigned they paid me $120 for the clothes I brought in. If you're selling quality brands and in great condition, then this is well worth it. There are good deals to be had, so don't trust the bad reviews - they are likely from people trying to consign lesser quality items. I agree some of the staff is not the warmest, but the store is always very busy when I go in, so likely they are just absorbed in keeping up with the work. read more

Look no further. Our daughter and her family were coming for a few- weeks visit from Spain, and we needed everything for two children under 3. What to do (?) so we didn't have to get everything new and expensive. Called my sister who said all the young mothers were talking about this place called "Once Upon a Child" in Fairfield. Seemed like a good idea instead of doing the garage sale thing searching high and low, and ending up with nothing. Well, needless to say, we hit the jackpot. Came home with two porta pack play cribs for sleeping, high chair, carriages, car seats, a few toys and other items ... and at bargain, affordable prices. After our daughter and her family arrived, my husband took her to this same "Once Upon a Child" for clothing, while I was home with my grandchildren. Bam ! They were there three hours and stocked up with enough clothing, rain boots, rain coats, etc., to stuff a suitcase (50 pounds) to take home to Spain for a whole year of school, etc. And, she repeated this on their second trip here. Another 50 pounds of clothing to take home. She also got the most adorable clothing for the children for my son's wedding in Vermont. Also, the big discount with the 10 percent off card helped. Recently, needed a changing table for my other son's children. Bam, again. Found a beautiful blonde wooden one, with changing pad, at 1/3 the cost of new. Also, frequently buy clothing and toys for my son's children here in the U.S.A. You need it, they have it !!! Friendly, happy and most helpful staff. Oh, and also found lots of new clothing with original tags. Grandson's favorites were the piles of plaid shorts in all sizes they took home. The two times I went there to consign, it was an awful experience. The first time, I was there for two hours total...possibly over. The wait was so long and the workers are so slow moving. I gave it another shot and after an hours wait, I decided to just give away all my things to a customer in the store shopping. I left with no extra cash but felt good that I donated things to someone in need. Basically, you wait and wait, workers don't care and aren't attentive, you get little for your items. After listening to the ad for the new store in Paramus on Pandora app for months decided to finally check the store out in Fairfield. I am currently 29 weeks pregnant with a baby girl. I am in need of some warm footie onesies and this was the perfect stop. As a first time mom I didn't want to splurge on baby items I know I wouldn't get to use more then twice and I have to admit this is the perfect place for me. Love the huge selections and color coordinated racks for my OCD lol. It is a little overwhelming the amount of choices but I also got to peak at the prices ranging from $2.50-$8.50 in newborn to 3 months section. Not bad as I usually shop at target clearance rack at similar prices for items I really don't need but they are on sale so why not. Store was clean and organized in general. The quality is great as i bought fleece and that tend to show wear and tear. 4 stars because the newborns and 0-3 months items were mixed up so kept picking up items with label that said newborn but the clothing tag said 0-3 months. read more

Where should I begin?... After hauling a full shopping cart of gently used high end baby clothes, an automatic bouncer, new play yard, bobby pillow, changing pad, etc to the Fairfield store. I was offered $34 for a small box of clothes, shoes, changing pad and play yard (which they valued at $12). The stores policy on purchasing gently used clothes is ridiculous because they turned down brand new clothes for no apparent reason. The associate who assisted me had the nerve to say that she could hear a nose coming from the bouncer... So they could not accept it... In the end, I didn't sell the play yard, bouncer, or rocker, in addition to an entire shopping cart of merchandise. And while they refused to purchase a white fisher price rocker because of a small stain... right behind the register I could see the manager with a rag cleaning a walker recently purchased from another customer. At the end of the day, I was extremely disappointed and will never return to this store. I also noticed that I was being treated differently than the other customers... so take my advice and stay away from this store altogether. The staff were very racist and rude. read more

I've been to this store a few times as a buyer. On each occassion, as I was patiently waiting to PURCHASE items, I was passed over... Once, all seven of the sales people behind the counter literally ignored me for a good 5 minutes. I had my stuff in hand and my wallet ready to go. I had to ask somebody if I was allowed to buy the items. "Oh" is all I got. Second time, I was basically told to stand aside as somebody brought their box of junk in to sell. That person got priority over a paying customer. Sorry, but if I am waiting there to BUY something, take me so I can give your store MONEY and leave. Third time, I was waiting...and waiting....the guy in front of me was taking forever with his selling and then buying stuff in one transaction. Another salesperson took the customers BEHIND me to another register. Sorry, I don't speak the same language as you, but I just wanted to buy a few things and leave. The store is nicely organized and has a wide range of stuff from clothes to toys to highchairs. However, the racks were full of overpriced clothes - I buy secondhand stuff all the time, but $5.50 for a pilly t-shirt? $50 for a jacket (it was North Face, but still - this is consignment)? $2.50 for a paperback picture book? Maybe it's a good deal if you REALLY care about labels, but otherwise, this place makes no sense for the consumer. I brought two big boxes of clothes, and they passed on almost everything, even in-season, popular brand (that they say the buy - Gymboree, Gap, Janie & Jack) items that were in better condition than what I saw on the shelves. What started out as a nice and helpful consignment shop where people in need can go for affordable children's items, has turned into a regular retail store with great prices. The place is flooded with snobby, greedy rich people looking for a good deal. The store now caters to these people by being extremely picky with what they buy from people. If it's not a "good seller", they give it back to you and completely waste your time and efforts of lugging all the stuff you no longer need but would like some money for to buy things you do need. Oh. My. God. I'm a mom. I have a four year old and a three year old. I can't even begin to fathom how much money I could have saved over the years if I'd known about this place sooner. Where to start? Their policy on accepting clothes is what makes it a great store. I saw a review about them not taking everything- and offering little for what they took. Here's the thing, the HAVE to do that. The quality of the clothing and toys and baby supplies (cribs, bouncers, etc.) they re-sell is excellent. There are quality name brands, like Gap and Gymboree, and many of the clothes DO still have tags. I also brought a ton of stuff on my second visit- and barely had anything accepted. I dropped the "rejects" down the street at Goodwill. I was actually GLAD to see they were so discerning- I honestly am looking at this more as a business person, knowing that quality is what keeps people coming back. As for what they pay? They need to make money, and they give about half of what they sell the item for. Here's the thing- the MOST EXPENSIVE piece of clothing I could find when I was shopping was $12. That means the max PER ITEM you will get is $6. I would look at this more as a way to get a little bit of credit towards your purchases, and a place to get rid of some of the barely worn stuff your kids grow out of- if you want to make money selling clothes, this isn't the place to do it (try Ebay). Do the math. Most of what I bought was in the $2.50 (pjs for my girls) to $6 (a really cute sweater dress). They know what is in demand, and they have a list at the front for those who are thinking of bringing stuff in. I recommend reading it, because business is all about supply and demand, and if you have something they can sell, they will take it. The store is bright, the stuff is well-marked, and organized by color and size (I wish my closet was this organized). As for the service- they were incredibly helpful and willing to help you look if you're searching for something (I needed a nice dress coat for my daughter, and the woman walked me over to the section, helped me find her size, and was extremely friendly). One person on the staff overheard me talking to my mother-in-law about looking for a purple cape for my daughter's Halloween costume, and spoke up that I could also check the girls' sweaters section, since they had several poncho style/cape style sweaters.
