I am writing to express my profound disappointment regarding a recent experience at your Harwood Heights "Once Upon a Child" location. As a loyal customer for approximately twenty-eight years, I have frequented your store, at its previous locations near Foster and Milwaukee Avenue, at Foster and Harlem Avenue and at the current site, to purchase clothing and toys for my adopted children, who are blind, and for my blind students at a local Chicago Public Schools (CPS) institution. My visit today was for a different, equally meaningful purpose. Our parish has been supporting a homeless family in the Jefferson Park Neighborhood who recently secured an apartment. I purchased several items for their young children, including a potty chair, a doll, a 3-D mailbox with letters, and a large dump truck. Upon completing my purchase, I requested a bag for the dump truck. I explained that I am legally blind, carry a white cane for orientation and mobility, and needed to manage my pull cart with one hand while navigating with my cane. The truck, being bulky, would have made my journey home via public transportation considerably challenging. I was informed that "Once Upon a Child" is a "No Bag" store and that the only option was to purchase a large bag for $3.99. Given my considerable expenditure, I declined to purchase an additional bag. My subsequent request for a discarded or used bag was denied by four employees, none of whom appeared to consider my safety or ability to transport the items home. The young man at the register even suggested I could return my purchases or inquire about a bag at "Plato's Closet" next door. I had invested considerable time selecting these items with the aid of a magnifying glass and was determined for the children to receive them. This experience was deeply disheartening. It is troubling to witness how a business, in its pursuit of profit, can seemingly disregard the well-being and dignity of its customers. While I understand that profitability is essential for any enterprise, an exclusive focus on the bottom line at the expense of human empathy fosters an unwelcoming environment. True success, I believe, stems from cultivating a culture where customers feel valued, respected, and heard, which ultimately builds loyalty and a thriving community benefiting all stakeholders, including the business itself. Please be advised that I will no longer patronize "Once Upon a Child." Furthermore, I intend to share my experience with my colleagues at CPS, encouraging them to reconsider their patronage of your chain. This place rips you off when buying stuff. They offered me very little for my stuff and they don't accept blankets, my blankets were brand new. Poor customer service. They don't know what they're doing and act stupid with you. read more

I've sold twice to this location and I've they bought a decent amount of my toddlers clothes. I've shopped here too and the clothes are in good condition. The selection of toddler boy clothes isn't big. Some clothing items are on the pricier side but I really only shop for graphic tshirts. Will definitely be coming back. read more

If I could give this zero goddamn stars I absolutely would!! Time and time again I try to give them a chance to redeem themselves with how they handle me as a consistent customer and seller. Today I brought my baby boys almost brand new lightning McQueen bicycle in, along with his gently worn black crocs and a few other gently worn items. Well let me tell you I was offered a measles a$$ $23 for it all. While a lady next to me had a bunch of what looked like junk to me, was offered $41 for hers stuff. Don't waste your time. As many of the other reviews state, the staff is very very rude and definitely rip you off. I came in with a mom push $150 stroller and they offered me $30 for it, and didn't take any of my other perfectly useable items. It's upsetting not because of the money, but that my baby stuff couldn't be used for a good cause, shame on this store for not taking better care of moms in need. read more

Waste of time to try to sell items here. I left with most of the things I came in with being told "too worn". A lot of items I was trying to sell had only been worn once or twice and were good brands like Carters and Osh Kosh. I browsed a bit through the store and wasn't impressed with the prices. Not much cheaper than if I would've bought new from Kohls or Old Navy. A lot of items also seemed well worn with pilling. Second time I've taken items there and second time I'm not impressed. A lot of old reviews saying staff is rude. 2023 staff has been very kind and accommodating. They're very very busy with so many people selling each day. As far as selling yes it can be frustrating when they don't take your items, but I just donate what's left over. Either way someone will get some use out of them! Went in to sell a baby trend double stroller and a snap n go stroller all to be offered $40 for both. They were selling a single stroller for $80 and a snap n go for $30 but only offered me $40 for both my strollers. I think the pricing is unfair and I was highly disappointed. I wonder why this is such a polarizing OUAC? It seemed just like all the other ones I've been to before in IN, SC, and NC. Great deals for gently used kids clothes. We scored ourselves a gift card to OUAC when we were pregnant with our youngest, but between the hand me downs she's gotten & COVID keeping us home when she was young, we're only now using the card two years later. They gave us zero issues about this and we were able to get what we needed quickly. Didn't even have to wait in line. It would be cool if there was a location closer to downtown Chicago, and I'll admit that you can score even cheaper clothes from other thrift stores, but with a gift card this place is great. Gotta loves clothes organized by size, gender, season, and color. Some thrift stores only organize by gender and good luck to you re finding the correct sizes. Not so here. Yay. read more

WAS RACIALLY PROFILLED THE MOMMENT I WALKED IN I walked in with my hoodie on 5,7 Hispanic male , walked to the 2t isle and instantly noticed a employee acting like they were re stocking clothes but in facts I kept looking at the employee and constantly noticed her glancing at me , where the business is located is a predominantly a caucasian Neighborhood once I noticed the employee looking at me constantly I knew what was happening, I then went to the shoe bins and I noticed another employee was starting at me over the counter into the shoe bin area , at that point I felt completely uncomfortable, I then proceeded to cash out with my purchase spent over $100 dollers on clothes for my daughter .. I then noticed a croc bin filled with pins for your shoes , I then put my hand to look at one and put it back , then once's I was done cashing out , a small Hispanic female approached me and said would you like me to ring you for the pins you put in your pocket, and I emptied out all of my pockets and with disbelief the Hispanic female got real offensive , then she pulled up the video and in the video I don't even put my hands in my pocket "I have video saved on my personal phone if any one wants to see" I then called her on her bluff and demanded a general manager and a managers number and the employee automatically got offended and called the cops on me for trespassing... first it was pay for the item you stop.. employee then realized she was wrong for accusing me and as well as the other employee she said seen me take something in witch I didn't then resulted in her tellling me just leave and don't come back .. at the point I knew they were in the wrong and I asked for GM AND MANAGER info and the Hispanic female did not comply and just called cops on me .. The selection is great but they are way too picky on what you try selling. I brought an entire bin of very nice clothes and got over half of it back for very dumb reasons. I will definitely come back to shop but I'd probably make more money selling my stuff at a garage sale or consignment shop. Pretty disappointing. I got really excited entering the store seeing SO many clothes. Everything looked very organized but there was just way too many clothes and toys it ended up being very overwhelming. When I finally decided to head for the clothing area, I noticed that the prices weren't that great. I went here yesterday and had a great experience. I read the other Yelp reviews before going and was hesitant to go to this location but honestly I don't know what other people are talking about because the staff was super nice here! I probably talked to 4 different people and every single one was extremely polite and helpful. I brought in some clothes to sell and they took some of my items and used it as a credit towards the new things I bought. When I first came in they said the wait was going to be over 2 1/2 hours for selling my clothes, but by the time I was done shopping which was about 45 minutes they were done with my items so they delivered in a shorter amount of time which is awesome. I bought about 35 different things, six pairs of shoes, and everything is in excellent condition! My daughter is 16 months old and I feel confident I have clothes for her for the year ahead. This is a child resale chain that has discounts or sales on holidays. Hit or miss: With the right finds, one can find clothes, toys, and books with price tags and great condition. This store also sell new items of Melissa & Doug toys and wipe books. This is the spot to find Halloween costumes and princess outfits. I usually load up on any Hello Kitty clothes as well. I rarely buy shoes there, for I feel Payless Shoe stores are about the same price for stylish, new shoes. Store is a bit dusty and my allergies kicked in: I could only stay for less than an hour before my allergies fullly kick in. At times, clothes and other items may pile up behind the cash register from going through items to buy from parents/guardians or waiting to put on the racks/bins, or waiting for parents/guardians for pickup. Hence, minus 2 stars. Well worth going to one: for $20 I have bought at least 4 items, if not 6 items worth of gently used clothes, toys, or books. Located in a plaza next to Plato's Closet. I was going to give 4 stars but changed it to 5 because: 1. All clothes are in great condition for being used. 2. All items are very clean and they sell new items also like winter hats and sippy cups. 3. Checkout staff is very fast and attentive. 4. They pay for used clothes/items, helping out those that need the extra cash and those that need cheaper but in good condition clothes. Only downfall (reason I was going to give 4 stars) is the prices are slightly high for a second hand store but I will pay it because the store is always very clean and the workers clearly do their job great (clothes are majority in the correct spots for sizing and well organized). read more

So for those frugal types theres Once Upon a Child which sells gently used car seats (great for Aunt Sally!), clothes, high-chairs and other sorts of childrens furniture. First of all I've been coming to this location for years shopping for my niece and nephew. Fast forward I now have my own child and I'm back!! Love the selection of items. Today I visited for something different I needed to rid my house of 0-6 mts items and play mats. I checked out the reviews, some good, some bad. My experience today was positive. The young lady responsible for receiving items was a pleasure to work with. She was so helpful in helping me understand the process. They bought the majority of the items in my bin. Its been a few yrs from my last review but when I recently made a quick stop I saw that they were selling the Melissa & Doug Wooden Town Vehicles Set carpet..and un-surprisingly it was MORE expensive here..I think they must forget that they are a 2nd hand store.....I can still find much better deals on NEW clothes than I do here on used clothes..the only good thing is that they have bigger selections but most items are still grossly overpriced for being used. read more

They offer you pennies on the dollar for the stuff you take to sell and then resell it for double of what they offer you. I brought in a huge bag of my son's clothing and also a baby bath tub that was only used maybe 5x. Out of that huge bag, they bought about 1/2 of it and paid me $40 for what they bought. I am ok with that, because I figure something is better than nothing. I freshly washed and grouped my son's clothing by outfit and also put the coordinating bib/socks/hat with the outfit because i'm OCD like that. It would have been very easy for the staff to lift an outfit set out of the bag, say yes or no, then move on to the next one, However, it drove me nuts that the ladies who looked through his things took outfits apart to make new outfits out of things that did not go together or match. If you see an entire Gymboree layette set, with like 8 pieces all matching, why break it up with some carters stuff to make an outfit? The young lady I spoke to said they did not buy baby bath tubs, which I thought was odd since there was a bunch on a shelf that looked very well used. But maybe she meant to say they had enough and couldn't use more? idk... The whole process took about 35 minutes. Most of the staff is decently friendly. One even went and got me a shopping cart so I could browse with my son, which I thought was nice. She almost made up for the snotty woman behind the counter who yelled at me to put my HUGE bag of clothes that I could barely carry, across the room and next to her on the floor, when her hands were free and I was also holding a 20 lb. baby and an unwieldy bath tub. A lot of the staff here seem to have a benevolent attitude, as though they're doing you a favor by looking through your items. There are some employees who do not act like this, however. I would come here again, but maybe once or twice a year at best because it's somewhat far from my home and I didn't feel that the service or experience was that great, to warrant the trip. However, it wasn't a total waste of time and I am grateful for the nice staff I did encounter and the $40 I made. Also, I purchased a brand new with tags, childrens place sweater for my son for $5.50 and a hard cover book for $2.50. There are a lot of items that are unworn with tags on them, however, you may get cheaper prices at a sale at the respective store the items came from, or at marshalls/nordstroms rack, etc. I browsed the toys but I was too grossed out to look much further. A lot of the exersaucers and older infant toys had food and other grime all over them, and they charged about half of what Target would charge. I'd rather pay full price and not have to scrub off some other child's food and germs from my son's toy. I feel that this store should be more strict on the condition of their toys. A little wear and tear is fine, but when there is food stuck all over the surface of a plastic toy, or a pile of dust when you pull it out from a shelf, I think that's unsanitary. read more

I've been to a few OUAC locations before and had good experiences, but not at this location! The staff was rude, the prices are so overinflated. Target (Circo) brand t-shirts for $4.50? I bought NEW Circo t-shirts at Target a couple of days ago for $4.99. I also saw a Columbia fleece bunting that I own, that cost $30 retail and they priced it at $45. WTF? Their website and the sign on their door reads that their most wanted items are "entertainers" (exersaucer type things) and bouncy seats. I brought in one of each in like new condition as well as a large tote of Zutano, Gap, Columbia outerwear and Carter's clothes and a wooden busy box that retails for $50.00. They rudely told me as soon as I walked in the door that they weren't accepting ANY baby gear, but they would take clothes and toys. So, I took some time to shop in that absolute wreck of a store. I know they recently moved to a bigger space? You wouldn't know it. The aisles are so so so narrow. I could not turn around without knocking something off of a hanger or off a shelf. I had a handful of clothes that I selected to purchase and asked them if they could put it behind the counter while I continued to shop, to free up my hands. They told me rudely I could use a cart. It is RIDICULOUS trying to push a cart around in that place. They finally finished going over my clothes and the busy box. They told me they couldn't buy ANY of my clothes, that they were totally overstocked in outerwear and basically all clothes except outfit sets and pajamas. Um, okay? So how about saying that before I diddle around for an hour in your disaster of a store? Oh, and they offered me TWO DOLLARS for my $50 toy. Yeah, no. I definitely will not be going back. read more

I agree with the others - this place used to be a LOT nicer and more affordable. Now, they are barely priced below retail. For example, a pair of shorts for my 4 year old was marked at $11 and they were selling (not on sale, either) brand new at Kohl's for $12. REALLY? Only $1 difference for USED clothes? That's absolutely ridiculous! Also, why do they say they won't buy stained clothes or clothes with rips/snags, and when you go through the racks, 3/4 of the stuff has stains and rips in them? If they're not buying these things from people, how is it ending up on the shelves? Do the garbage fairies come during the night and take all the good clothes off the racks and replace them with stuff that even homeless people wouldn't wear? I only buy things that will be used once, like if my daughter needs a certain color shirt to wear for color day at preschool, or something for a Halloween costume. Otherwise, I don't even bother because I can get brand new for just a fraction more... and I know it will last and it won't be stained and outdated. I would NEVER in a million years sell to these people, though! I brought in a brand new toy, still in the box, that retailed for $60. They offered me FOUR DOLLARS! The box was immaculate. The toy had not been recalled. I sold it anyway because I was tired of it collecting dust and taking up space in my home. I went in there the next week and they were selling it for $38! Almost a 400% profit for them. Greedy, greedy, greedy. I THOUGHT the premise of the store was to find affordable used items, to help those of us who aren't rolling in the dough. Sadly, the past few years, this concept has gone by the wayside and it's all about them making money hand over fist. I love that each OUAC is individually owned, and I try to support local businesses as much as I can. However, this is one business that I will not patronize unless I absolutely have to, because they don't care about anything but making money. Even the employees' horrible attitudes attest to that - they can't even be bothered to say "goodbye" before hanging up on you after a phone conversation. You say goodbye and all you hear is a click and the dial tone. They really do need to retrain their staff on common courtesy, manners, and customer service. Very disappointed. read more

The ladies working there were extremely nice and went through our stuff very quickly. They have a very meticulous eye and it was interesting to see people bringing in things with a tear and them not taking it. We also found a few winter clothes for the kids. Great concept, generally an OK chain, a good way to save money & recycle at the same time: what's not to like? The staff at this particular store is nice-ish, very helpful, but the manger is a little too helpful, if you know what I mean: as in bossy, both to the customers and to the staff. (I hate being in a store while a manager hollers at her staff.) So selling items here can sometimes be a bit of a chore, depending on who is behind the counter. Be prepared to fill out a form, and get a seller's card (and a promotional calendar, whether you want one or not. It's all a little more complicated than I think it really needs to be, but, whatever.) They can be a bit arrogant too, for a thrift store full of plastic in a down-scale strip mall. Here's a hint: don't bring the stuff you want to sell in a bag, that's a no-no for some reason. And if you forget the cardboard box or whatever you brought the stuff in, be prepared to be scolded - even months later. Apparently excess cardboard boxes are a serious problem in today's thrift store. Who Knew? And don't bring a traditional wicker laundry basket - they need to put stickers on everything. They ruin the covers of their books with big honking stickers too. Other more obvious advice applies - stuff needs to be clean and whatnot. Fading and pilling is allowed, harsh chemical reek is mandatory, extremely tiny stains are not acceptable. Greasy, noisy, sleazy plastic toys are "in style" and that's all there is to it. (well, they do have a nice selection of new (?) Melisa & Doug wood stuff, I guess the important thing is that everything is made in China, or it's "not in style" according to these folks. They could also definitely use a little hint about certain brands - the big mainstream standards they recognize and will pay for accordingly, some smaller but BETTER brands (Hanna Andersson, Lapsaky, Rei, anything organic, anything handmade - even fine boutique stuff) they don't recognize the name, and so under-value some excellent items: which is fine, I guess, I can sell it on eBay, but it wastes my time, the attitude I don't need, and of course this means WAY less selection of the kinds of things I want, making store credit more or less worthless. (They won't pay cash, only issue a check or store credit - do people really attempt fraud on this level?!?) There is also a factor of... hmm, how to say it: I like natural and organic hand made clothes, European boutique style things, I buy high-quality clothes for my kid, and some of them still have a lot of life in them when she out-grows them. I do NOT buy "bratz" or anything with glitter, or big honking brands on everything, no "licensed character" imagery, I absolutely do NOT do the "Lil Ho wear" thing: the polyester-clad staff apparently equates this to "old fashioned" and "out of style" and doesn't mind telling me this, whether or not I'm interested. (I'm not.) So it's cool if I only bring in horrible things misguided relatives give as gifts, from stores I can't be bothered to make a return for exchange to. I also do NOT use bleach and harsh detergents, and this seems to go against the grain here - I've had to wash everything I get from 1UaC at least twice with vinegar & plain water to remove the excessive detergent residue. Anything you buy here that is supposed to be black will be heavily faded from this kind of harsh, heavy laundering. In my 4 years of shopping there, I have found a total of 1 linen-blend item, ZERO pure linen, and ZERO wool. ZERO silk. ZERO organics. It's pretty much acrylic blends all the way. No cloth diapering items. No traditional slings or anything like that, but a lot of nylon carriers. No all-leather shoes, as in none, ever. Absolutely nothing handmade. It's all suburban mall stuff. Which is fine if you're into that: I'm not. Still, given all that it is very well organized and generally clean for a thrift store. They have a little play area for the kiddies, and it's in the same strip mall as Little Caesar's "Caesarland" (pizza and climbers) which can be handy. If I had mom friends I'd try to take the kids to Caesarland and each take a turn popping out to shop at Once Upon while the other watched the kiddos. But I'm an old punk jerk, so I have few mom friends. Also on the plus side, toys, accessories, some seemingly new. Some good bargains. On the minus side, the things I have that sell for 20$ and up on eBay they won't touch (and even kind of insult me about) and finding natural fibers, wooden toys, or other traditional things is absolutely not going to happen here. Excellent source of low-priced used plastic stuff, if you're into that, and nothing else, and assume this is something to brag about. Otherwise, save the hassle - go to a regular thrift store. I have had good luck finding real wool & linen stuff way out in McHenry county, where people still value handmade stuff, and will sell it to you without the attitude. read more

This store is a JOKE. The clothing for sale is pilled, has holes in it and often wrinkled. I've sold here before with PRISTINE NEW WITH TAGS items from Carter's and OshKoshB'Gosh, only to be told they wouldn't purchase items with "certain snaps", as "THE OWNER" dislikes them. The employees seem to be fearful of the owner, and pay MUCH less than OTHER OUAC stores.... DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME SELLING OR BUYING.... If I could give zero stars I would. Also worth mentioning, the "toy department" is not dirty, but FILTHY. The rest of the store is just dirty, like it's not been cleaned since the store opened. read more

Excellent customer service. I had buyer's remorse after spending way too much on some snow pants that didn't even come with a coat, and buying a winter coat that I later realized would be too small once it actually gets cold. But I was afraid to go and try to return them because I waited too long and lost my receipt (they have a 7 day policy and you need a receipt). All I had were the clothing tags. The owner went above and beyond to help me and accepted my items for a store credit. I really appreciated her help and it definitely makes me want to shop here again. The employees in the rest of the store were very helpful and polite and there is such a huge variety of stuff. I got a fantastic, NWT winter coat for my son for an amazing price. And they also sell Melissa and Doug. Definitely shopping here again. I'm so glad I went in today to try to resolve my issue. read more

They took a whole twenty minutes to look through 4 bags of toys........ummmm no they didn't and then they picked out about 8 toys in pristine condition and gave my son a whopping $12.71!!!! I understand they need to make a profit but REALLY!!!! I would love to go back and see the prices they put on those toys, they are a rip off and I will never sell anything or refer any of my family or friends to them. My son was really disappointed and immediately regretted selling them his stuff, for myself I just wanted to get rid of all the clutter but I do believe they screwed him over. Update. Two years later, we gave the store another try and the pricing seems to have normalized. Either we weren't alone in our estimation, the store changed its pricing policies, or a new staff came in. Regardless, we're back to buying our (younger) kids' clothes here. One additional note--we discovered the sweet spot for clothes/shoes here are for up to age 5. Past that, the selection sort of peters out, and the pricing isn't quite so great. read more
