This was a surprising find. The owner was the only one working but he was so inviting and nice, you couldn't help but be drawn in with his charisma. He recommended two paneer dishes since that's what we were craving. We had the saag and one another one that was kind of like a butter chicken sauce. Both were very good and tasted fresh. I will highly recommend this place specially if you are a biryani lover . Being an Indian it is a big disappointment that we don't get proper version of biryani in A2.I am so glad to find this place. Eastern Flame is back! The greatest Indian restaurant in Ann Arbor. It appeared before me in an unassuming red-and-white checkered wrapper. What was inside? I opened the wrapper and there it was: A single, perfectly smooth, perfectly balanced kati roll. The flavors danced upon my tongue. The chutney was soft and creamy. The chicken, perfectly cooked. Food was REALLY good but I can't get myself to come back because like what another commenter said, the place is just shady, like a health violation is waiting to happen, if it hasn't happened already. The guy who took our order took our money and then cooked our food without washing his hands! He wasn't wearing a beard cover either and my friend was really worried that she'd find hair in her food. This was awful. First of all, the place is so shady. The ceiling was dripping water to the floor in the kitchen. And there was just random things in the place-like a bike. The one person working was not friendly at all. He used his bare hands to put the meat on the grill, then answered the phone, then took money---with not ONCE washing his hands. The kati roll was so over spiced, it was awful to eat-that should be mentioned or starred on the menu---this item is spicy. The items did not taste fresh & the portion for the price was very little. And it was pricey. As other reviews stated, what we wanted wasn't available. It's not hard to post-out of the item. And there is no explanation of what the items are. So far I have tried achari and tikka rolls , pakoras , samosas , chicken biryani and butter chicken . Food is great to taste and is really inexpensive with 2 rolls for $6 , $8 for butter chicken that comes with rice and paratha. It takes some time for the guy to make the food as the most of the times he alone manages the entire place . Also no decent place to sit down as such , so more or less it's to go place . read more

My fellow Yelpers have indeed found, as I have, Faroukh, the open armed friendly owner and one man show. Careful on Fridays, though. He does not open until after 4 on that day. Having followed him since he opened his place on Packard, when I get the urge for super wow cooking, I call ahead and place a mega order, some of which gets tossed in my freezer for later dates with culinary destiny. Since he cooks fresh and to order, and since the eat-in ambiance lacks tables and chairs, I poke around in local markets in the same strip mall while he works his magic. At least three cups of cooked basmati rice and either a naan or paratha accompany each dinner. My favorites remains the butter chicken, the palak paneer and any biryani, Faroukh remains a trip in himself as you will discover when you meet him. The weird name of the place though hints not at what can be experienced within. read more

Great take out place for Biryani and Rolls. The flavour of the rice is amazing and the Chapli kabob roll is our favourite. The yogurt side is very spicy and tasty. LOVE IT! It's not even been a month since this place opened and we have already eaten their more than 6-7 times. Highly recommend it. The pricing is great too. read more

These guys make the best Kati Roll I've ever tasted! I've never been to a restaurant that is 100% consistent with making their food the same exact way and taste. Usually restaurants start to slack shortly after they open but not this place; they are always on top of their game and their cooks are super friendly and very easy to get along with. So I live about a half-mile away from this place and I really, really like it. Yes it is certainly a hole in the wall, but it satisfies my Indian craving well. My go to is usually the Shahi Paneer or the Paneer Saag. My boyfriend will usually get 2 kati rolls. I'm knocking off a star because the last two times we've tried to order lamb gyros, they are "out of season." The lamb shawarma was an okay alternative, but it can be spicy so be careful if you're sensitive to that. I love the heat but it can be a bit much for my boyfriend. read more

Food was amazing and received awesome service! Came here about 2 months ago on a pretty dull Sunday. The owner/cashier let us try a bunch of food to let us see what we would like! Ended up with an order of the biryani, kati rolls along with other stuff. A week later we placed a pretty big catering order and the food was excellent! All of the guests were raving! It is really hard to find good quality halal food near Ann Arbor especially Indian/Pakistani food so we were extremely happy that we found a good one. read more

Stopped by for a quick lunch and let the man behind the counter suggest a sandwich: marinated, grilled chicken on a flat bread with raw onion and a yogurt-dill sauce. It was delicious. This is the worst kati roll I had so far. I ordered a chicken kati roll and asked the owner for suggestion. He suggested Mutton kati roll, I went with it. This restaurant gets one star because of hygiene, quality of food and taste of the food. Hygiene: the cook/owner did not wash his hands, did not use gloves, touched a whole bunch of different things and handled raw meat and bread with the same hands. Hygiene is out of his dictionary. The chicken tikka kati roll was really tomato sauce and too salty, tasted like bad butter chicken. Mutton was not spiced and very bland. The roll used is a stock indian frozen paratha that can be bought at any indian grocery store, not fresh. I saw this restaurant on yelp and had 4 stars. I could not believe it after I had the food and saw him make it. I used to rely heavily on yelp reviews but this kinda hurts the credibility. read more

I go there, tell him "Whatever you feel in the mood to make, I'll eat" and so far I have yet to be disappointed. He's one of only two people I trust to cook for me in this manner; the fact that there are no duds on his menu helps a lot too. Sadly, I have to down-grade the rating on this restaurant. While they made a great first impression, and all the food we've had from here since has been pretty good, we've had sooo many problems ordering from them. Of the last 7 times we've attempted to order, 3 separate times (that we triple verified that they were indeed open) we could never get them to pick up the phone, even waiting hours apart to call. One more time, we somehow managed to get through, but when we went to pick it up, they had lost our order. For those keeping score we've attempted to order 7 times, successfully done it 3 times, failed 4 times. 3/7 is not a great track record for pickup orders, this is not a one-off thing with them. Considering their ambiance is non-existent, it's not like you really want to dine in, so they need to get their pickup game in order fast. I've literally never had a restaurant that repeatedly won't pick up the phone or loses orders. About once a week I think this place sounds good, and ultimately decide against it, because even though it's great when we get it, less than 50% chance we will get food. read more
