You're nose is frozen on your face during the winter. In the summer it's so damn hot you melt onto their hard, metal benches if your lucky enough to find one of the few benches without interlopers. This concept might work in upstate New York. This is Missouri. It's either 95 degrees or 30. That pleasant food court smell doesn't waft up through the doorway to great you. Instead you're greeted with the odor of spent petroleum. This summer you will be dodging the angry wasps that guard each planter. Faux elegance at it's best. The stores are mostly smaller versions of what you would find at Oak Park or Independence center. This place is a decent stop off to kill some time but if you really want shopping you need to go to the larger stores at other locations. There is one bright spot, Macy's. Why? This store is genius. In this unassuming store they have placed a Starbucks, an oasis for men waiting for their wives while they finish shopping. The mere act of selecting flip flops can take a woman over two hours -this is a fact. For the first time in my life I sat down and enjoyed an anchor store comfortably without pressuring my wife to go. This alone gives the entire area a bump to three stars. Of course, its small enough my wife can't find what she's looking for and we end up driving over to Oak Park anyway.

But the one thing that just really ticks me off is the fact that they want your clothes to be clean, in good condition and folded but if you're left with anything they won't take, they wad the item up and are in a heap in the bag like they mean for it to look like a trash bag! They even offered me 10% more in store credit--and yeah, I considered it. There were some fire pieces that almost had me breaking my own rules. But let's be real: my closet is already a crime scene. The mission was purge, not relapse. Bottom line? If your closet's bursting with regrets and "what was I thinking" buys, ATC is your no-BS exit strategy. Cool staff, smooth process, no pressure. Much has changed over the years. The Social Service League Thrift store has never been more…read morebeautiful and organized. It has high-quality donors and wonderful customers. Customers of all ages are always saying, "this is my favorite store". The store is run by volunteers who work all week with programs for the disadvantaged, and on Saturdays for sales. The volunteers get nothing but good karma and the satisfaction of knowing they are helping people through the programs. Board members, volunteers, employees (when they have them) get no discounts, no first dibs, no advantages over customers. The SSL has been in existence in it's original form since 1863, and in it's current location since the ealry 1900. Note: this is a biased review: I love the place.

Guys, trust me when I say at some point your girlfriend/girl who is a friend/spouse/mother WILL want to come to this sometime. I can admit, it's pretty fun rummaging through the shops. We find ourselves in the Hello Sailor shop more than some of the other ones because it definitely has the best layout. Some of the other shops are multiple floors with crowds and narrow staircases (admittedly part of the charm of the older repurposed buildings) that don't make it quite as easy to navigate. Hello Sailor has a wide spread floor, less clutter, and more quality options. I've noticed in a lot of these antique shops that the first 60 seconds can really determine if you're going to like what they have. If you're seeing mustard yellow couches and rows of cartoon farm animal cookie jars, it might be time to head to the next shop. Bonus, they have public restroom in the middle of the shop. Our latest excursion had us looking for a coffee table. My wife has a good eye and spotted a kitchen table and figured we could trim the legs on it. While it wasn't marked, it didn't take long to find someone who confirmed it was for sale, texted the owner and came back with a fair price. Once you buy furniture, you can move your car carefully through the crowds out front and take a spot by their loading bay. They'll have their staff bring it out and help you get it in the car if needed. If you aren't able to fit it in your car that day you just save your receipt for the next time you can come in and they'll get it out to you.

Currently they just have signs in the window and they appear to be hiring. The service was friendly and the store is organized well. They have the typical selections of most thrift stores: adult and children clothing, household goods, some books, but not very much. They have some DVDs and odds and ends. They also had infant clothing, purses/bags, shoes, and a variety of other items. They do have a small amount of toys, but they don't have a dedicated area for that. They sit them on top of the shelves on top of clothing racks so you have to kind of look for them. I purchased a toddler floaty life vest for my two year-old grandson and it was five dollars. I'm not sure how much they typically are, but I'm sure they're more than five dollars and it appeared to be in good condition. They have a variety of sales that are going on throughout the week. For example, on Fourth of July they had a 50% off special. I will pop back in here and there just to see what new items they get for toys and books.
