You know the kind of mythical vintage clothing store where you can find a beaded wool sweater from the 1950s for less than 50 bucks or *that perfect* puffy sleeved rayon dress from the 1940s for like 30 dollars? I'd heard rumor that such stores existed in the heartland, and I kept on keeping the hope alive. I'd resigned myself to "some day, I will get out there" especially when I *only* wore vintage. How I yearned for the day I'd be able to get out of NYC to find that elusive fabulous deal, all the while spending above and beyond what I should have been spending on clothing that I wore until it fell apart (which is soooo darling when you're 20). Lo and behold, I not only venture into but *move* to the heartland and realize, this fantastical store is not a myth after all. You will find it in Wild Man Vintage in Lawrence! It's kind of jaw-dropping, really. Not only do they have a decent selection of coats, blouses, sweaters, and dresses (mid century through the 90s, plus plenty of second hand jeans) for the wild ladies, but they have plenty for the wild men, too, especially Pendleton shirts and cowboy shirts of all different styles. As Lydia A mentioned, they do a lot of crafty consignment buys and some of it is really outrageous and interesting. A lot of it I would have worn years ago as I'm not feeling that outrageous these days, I'm afraid. Quality varies, and they kindly clue you in with "as is" warnings on the tags. I have not seen a single thing that I'd deem "overpriced," and after all these years of shopping vintage, I know that's a rare, wonderful thing. I found a pair of shoes that looked great and fit me well, but the heel made it too difficult for me to walk. I was too nervous to ask if I could live inside the store, which I would have had to do if I had purchased the shoes. So instead, I looked through their collection of vintage sunglasses and waited for a moment to slip out the door unnoticed. Wild Man Vintage finally gave me some hope for the fading vintage shops I keep seeing on my travels. With the interwebs and Ebay, great vintage threads are tough to find, especially T's--my poison. The WMV brought me closer to "buttery-softness" than any other vintage shop in the KC area. A few tag grabs showed Screen Stars and Sportswear, while others were completely unreadable. That's a triple threat you know will bring you quality. The prices are downright silly. Most of the T's, jackets and shirts can be had for $15 or less! I also really enjoyed the back shoe section--a shoe boutique if you will. You'll have a little privacy from the main sales floor and find some great boots. I know I did. I almost forced myself to fit into these size 10 1/2 or 11 vintage Vibram ankle boots (the size was already worn off on the inside) Unfortunately, bloody toes and foot cramps held me back from making an impulse buy. read more

Vintage culture prides itself on turning fashion on its head, so I guess such a store named after a wild man makes sense. Instead of inspiration, Wild Man's walls and store displays just seem weird to be weird. Since the inventory is smaller than, say, Arizona Trading Company's, Wild Man is less of a one-stop shop and more of a "maybe I can find a really cheap pair of jeans" place anyway. One of the top five things one could see upon entering a vintage clothing store is a massive stack of records next to a functioning(gasp!) turntable. I knew then that I had entered a lifestyle store, not a den of hipsters. For you see, it's one thing to say you listen to vinyl and have a vinyl collection that compliments your trendy hipster beard, hideous neon glasses, and short shirt, and a completely different thing to embrace vinyl with all it's pops and hisses, constant need for flipping of records, and annoyingly/heartwarmingly interactive experience. Wild Man has been on Mass St for several years now, which makes them A-OK in my book. I laughed many times at their window displays before I ever set foot in the door, although my particular favorite were the mannequin's that overdosed on pills. Subversive and dark, my kind of humor. Having entered that den of snobs known as Arizona Trading Company before, I was hesitant to enter the first time. Like many, I went looking for a costume piece for a Halloween ensemble and was pleasantly surprised at the selection. While it's not the biggest store in the world, they do a good job at keeping a variety of pieces and sizes in stock. Things were reasonably priced, which delighted my inner Halloween kid as I purchased some leather platform boots for the low low price of $10. Having returned now several times for legitimate purchases, I've rarely left empty handed. Even when just killing time, I almost always find something I can't live without. While others claim it to be weird, I claim it to be more authentic. Nixon watching you get dressed seems like the type of thing he'd probably have done anyway. read more

Wild Man really is as good as it gets. Phil, the owner, goes WAY out of his way to travel around thrifting for the BEST vintage for his store. He has a love for it that borders on extreem. The staff is incredibly kind, fun, and hip. They are not pretentious in the least bit. Striking up a conversation about music, the scene, crazy people, local food, etc...is always encouraged. They play great records on the turntable and the decor is something you just have to take in. i love the makeshift dressing rooms. The prices are excellent as well. Never have i found a vintage store that is keenly aware of whom they are catering to...townies and students. Wild Man is aware that most people in college towns don't make a ton of money. As a person with personal love for/thirst for knowledge about vintage and years of professional experience working in independent vintage boutiques and for myself as a buyer and seller of vintage: This place is a step under OK! Upstairs is nearly all 70's and 80's bright colors, giant cuts, and polyester... The stuff that's still easy to find in second-hand settings. For men are old Levi's and T-tshirts (Many I recognized came from a "secret digging spot" that sells old t-shirts for ten cents), sweaters, sweatshirts. I have found a couple nice dresses here, a late 60's yellow brocade dress and the blue gingham dress as part of my Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz Halloween costume. And that's all. The counters are stuffed with wholesale wares: plastic rings, cheap sunglasses, tube socks. Very trendy, not dedicated to vintage, more "Vice magazine had pictures of people wearing stuff like this." Not the type of things I seek, but sorta interesting to see! Sorta! HOWEVER! One must ask to go there but: There is a basement! Full of dresses and nice stuff (Their term is "collector's dresses" hmmm)! From the 30's 40's and 50's! At great prices!! I even found a pair of size 12 women's pumps from the 1950's one time! It's a never-changing selection, and many zippers are broken and hems are fallen, but if you have a little knowledge and patience, there are GREAT deals here. I found a fantastic 40's bias cut silk brocade dress (With a broken zipper and fallen hem) that I wore to a few weddings and I look AWESOME in for only $32. LOVE THE BASEMENT! GO TO THERE! My gripe, that may effect my general opinion of the store more than I'd like to think it does, is the unfriendly or bizarre way some of the sales help has treated me. One occasion my boyfriend was whispered and snickered about (audibly!!) because of some unimportant past social event... that should not happen in a workplace! Second occasion involved my asking how to apply for a job there, and was answered with a bizarre litany of unprofessional stories about potential co-workers and their boss and just... Bad, drama-rama stories! Just... No! I was instantly repelled from the idea of working in that environment, and didn't even apply. ALL IN ALL, This store is mediocre to a person whose next shopping stop is Lawrence Antique Mall or Antiques Bazaar (both north on Mass, across the street) rather than a person whose next stop would be Urban Outfitters, they'd LOVE Wild Man... So the 2 star "I've experienced better" rating is exactly what i think. read more

The prices here are really incredible for vintage. They have a nice selection in a pretty wide variety of sizes and I'm always impressed by how cheap things are here. Of course, you can never go expecting to find something specific, but you just might find something great! My main complaint is the organization. Clothes are organized by size, which is great. But it's sort of crowded (the racks have too many clothes on them) and feels very "musky". (but you know, it's a vintage store, so what do you expect?) WIld Man Vintage is definitely an off the wall place. It fits right in with the local artsy scene that is Lawrence. The place has so much history just sitting in it waiting for you to rummage through. If you have the patience there might be something really valuable there just waiting for you to find it. On the bright side, the store offers an alternative option for apparel. From the lime green walls, to the shag carpet, to the mountain of vintage records, Wild Man was the the thrift shop before there was such a thing (Macklemore reference). The down side of the place is that it is a bit small, and hard to navigate when there are a lot of people there. Also, the place has a distinctive smell... Whenever I come to Kansas to visit family I require - I insist on - a visit to Wild Man Vintage. Nearly every single time I walk out of there with some fantastic and fun goodie I didn't know I needed to have. Be prepared to look and I recommend trying on anything you are interested in taking home because vintage garments are cut different than modern pieces. There's a good mix of styles. I especially like the old men's snap button shirts and fun 80's print dresses. The pricing seems a bit inconsistent at times but it definitely doesn't deter me from finding something that will take up residence in my closet! read more

My husband found about 4 shirts, which was a big plus, as vintage stores are usually stocked with duds made for 'manarexics'. For those who love a good dress, the selection is very good.
