My partner surprised me with an onsen and dinner experience yesterday and I was so happy he did! I am giving a blended review of both experiences, starting first with the onsen.
It's $50 for about 2 hours for 1 person. There is a wet sauna, dry sauna, and hot tub available for use. I loved their saunas and the hot tub was just ok. The water was not hot enough and the main room was also a little chilly.
Although there were about 10 or so guests there, it didn't feel crowded, and everyone was very nice. It was a great experience but could be leveled up with some small changes, overall, I give the experience a 4 or 5 star review! Specifically, there wasn't towels or robes in my locker when I arrived. I felt like the spa area's bathroom needed more attention than it got and a few other small complaints, but those were the main ones. Details that could be tightened up to just make the experience feel more lux.
Pearl Spa used to offer a day pass option for $40 before COVID, but now they no longer do. This experience is probably the closest to that, and it's co-ed! A body scrub or massage would have been amazing to add on. I would 100% come back for the onsen.
I can tell the owner(s) care deeply about the ambiance and small details of the restaurant and spa. Service was amazingly professional from everyone, so please don't think my review is taking away from your wonderful staff.
The reason for the 3 star review is because of the dinner! I'm sorry but it wasn't what we preferred at all. Had I seen the menu beforehand, candidly, I don't think we would have stayed. They have rotating chefs, I think?, and the menu we had was prefixed with 3 courses. I do not feel like I got good value for what we paid ($60/person), mainly because the portions were really small. I think if the food aligned with my palate more, I think the portion sizes would have bothered me less? Who knows.
The dinner just felt pretentious? I feel like that word is way too harsh, but it's all I can think of at the moment. First course was a small piece of salmon with creme fresh and a cilantro sauce. It was legit just 1 piece of salmon and the pieces of honeydew served weren't ripe or sweet. The sauce served with the salmon honestly just didn't taste like anything and pooled on the plate. It was a lot of great ideas with meh execution and tiny portions, so it just felt a little lame.
Second course was a risotto, again, a really really small portion. I think there were clams or mussels in it. Not very flavorful but cooked well?
Third course was a dessert with cooked peaches and mango, some kinda cheese cake foam thing, and some shaved salted egg. It was probably the best dish, but god honestly, I just wanted a darn real slice of cake. Maybe we were just starving from soaking and sweating away in the sauna, so our appetites were just bigger than normal, but I couldn't help but notice the table next to us had meh reactions to the food too.
I love fancy food, unique concepts, pretentious / boujee dishes. TBH...$60 / person really isn't that much if I just liked the dinner better. Compared to what others have gotten as prefixed options, I just kinda felt let down... Since I didn't like it, it therefore felt like too much money...
I'd love to come back and try everything again. I love the concept and want to support this business. I just wish I could see the menu beforehand so I can decide if this is an onsen only night or a duo-experience night.
Edit to add: I did want to make one more comment. My partner and I were celebrating an anniversary. For that celebration, our waitress brought my partner a shot of alcohol. Since I don't drink...I got nothing, and I thought that was really weird... read more
