This used to be a spot I'd come to relax and unwind. It's not a fancy upscale spa, but it gives you everything you need to reset your inner balance when you're just out of sorts. I'd put off coming in here after there was so much push for "true female" nights for "religious" purposes. And that upset me. Femininity is an expression that is fluid. I respect that all things happen on a spectrum, and thought this was an inclusive space that was safe for all. Now? I'm not entirely sure. If I didn't have a $200 gift card, I might not have come in on a random Thursday. I guess it's great that it's social, but I show up to completely dissociate and get back in tune with my body. I did feel hyper aware of men who seemed to be next to me, in front of me, and always right around my orbit. That gave me a bit of the ick. All I'm going to say is I'm fine that this place isn't a posh spa. I like the feel of community it can build. But I'm saddened about the approach to gender expression it's taken. It's tough to support a business that is giving off anti-trans sentiment. PERIOD.

Steve just had the girl who works there call me so she could cancel my massage apt at 5. I have had this appt for several days and they told me at 4:15 when I just arrived in sf from Modesto that they wouldn't let me into the spa. He said "don't worry about it we won't charge you" Are you serious I don't have anything else to do that's what I was going to do in sf. I've had this appt for days. I am so frustrated he said the hours are reflected online, but online it says they're open til 7. How sucky.

I went here with my uncle recently. I enjoyed it. Co-ed and clothing optional. Cold plunge. Different hot and warm soak pools. Cold pool. Different sauna from wet to dry. Met some interesting folks here. Feedback: I didn't dig some of the music. I like some techno yet didn't vibe with some of the music they were playing. I like being social and meeting new people yet for example when I was meditating in a zone in the wet sauna some folks were chatting and took away from the meditative vibe. I have been to Harbin and enjoy it yet is far from SF. This is close and is in the City. I am curious to check out Kabuki hot springs as my close friend used to work there. I hear they have a meditative vibe that I would probably love. The cafe had Denver Nuggets vs Boston Celtics playing in a close game where the Nuggets and the Joker won. Joker is no joke. The cafe had some vegan options including chana masala served with pita bread and a borscht served with rye bread that looked good. All in all I enjoyed and would go back.

Ask the Community - Archimedes Banya

    Is this location ADA compliant?

Is there still an issue with car break-ins outside?

I've never had a problem... of course ensuring nothing is left in the car, nothing ever visible.

    Are you size inclusive?

Yes. Saw men and women of all shapes and sizes and ages last week.

Hi,I'm wondering about the happy hour. Do I need to leave before 4 pm?

No, you just have to check in before 4 pm. Weekdays and non-holidays only.

    Are robes and slippers provided?

Yes! and a towel...but usually there are so many towels and robes on hooks its hard to find yours. So put it in a place you'll remember

Are there parking spots in the facility?

I don't think so, we easily found parking on the street.

Is the Japanese pool coed clothing optional all hours?

    Yes.

Is Banya still doing women's night on the first Tuesday of the month? I'm trying to go this evening on 12/7, but can't get through to someone on the line. Both Google and Yelp says it's closed on Tuesdays, which is confusing. Thanks for the help!

The Banya is open the first Tuesday of the month for women's night and now is resuming men's night on the third Tuesday of the month.

Do they have appointments in the afternoon between 12 and 4pm?

    Yes

Does anyone know what the Covid policy is at the spa right now? I've been calling them for days and they don't seem to answer their phone. Curious if you have to wear a mask while inside the steam rooms and Jacuzzis etc.

You don't need to wear a mask, but you must show proof of vaccination in order to enter.

Any news on when the banya might open?

The banya reopened May 12 and now has returned to its pre-pandemic hours.

Trying to find out if this place is open for walk-ins today 4/9/21. anybody know?

I think the Banya is still closed. I recently emailed them and asked for a reopening update, but haven't heard anything yet.

Has the Banya reopened now or at anytime since March 2020?

?can I wear watch get in?its water proof

Yes, but temperatures may be real problems

Are the steam and sauna co ed?

    Yes

Are both men and women completely nude ? Is the coed part clothing optional as well?

Yes they are, but again it's optional so not all.

Where is Royal Hammam service provided? The description says "one of the heated wet rooms". I'm not sure if there is any such room downstairs in the spa. Is it performed in one of the dry sauna at banya floor?

Is massage done with covers on? After spending 3 hours in heated saunas and steam room, we would love to get couples massage without anymore sweating.

It's optional, you can have a towel over you, underwear or without clothing. Depends on the masseuse I guess.

I have read that on the first and third Tuesday's of each weekend it is men and women only. However does anyone know if they are open the second and fourth Tuesday of each month?

They are closed on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month for cleaning.

Both my friend and I asked for female masseurs but we were both offered a male masseur. No explanation was given for the discrepancy. This is most likely the admin issues. We didn't bring it up as both of us are okay with male masseur as well despite what we have requested. Asked for a deep tissue massage, but was provided a Swedish massage instead, so as my friend. The massage was not bad but I can tell that the masseur is quite green in massaging based on my massage experience. Mentioned the work needed most to work on before we started the session. I felt that the masseur was trying to cover his course of massage, may be with just spending very little extra time on the tight side as needed. When trying to loosen a knot, he would still use his elbow to just push through the knot over and over. Knot is still there. Imagine how uncomfortable it was. He didn't work on the pressure point or may not even notice where the tight area was. My body was not relaxed after the massage. With the high price of this place, I have high expectation but was very disappointed. I guess if you just want to have a relaxing time, it may work. But if you have areas to work on, it is not the place.

Be mindful of having to pay for parking on some streets as well as parking time limits. One thing to note is that there are two entrances--if it's your first time, the entrance across from Dumpling Time is where you'll check in. From the moment we arrived, the staff was incredibly warm and welcoming. The waiting area was comfortable and thoughtfully stocked with refreshments, including water, dates, and dried mangoes, which was a nice touch and made the experience feel more hospitable. I booked a 1-hour Thai massage with Vollra. Before the massage, I filled out an intake form where I could indicate my preferred pressure level and any areas that needed extra attention. I requested strong pressure and she absolutely delivered. She was skilled, attentive, and seemed to know exactly where my muscles needed work. My back had been feeling particularly tight, and by the end of the session I could immediately feel a difference. I left feeling relaxed, refreshed, and significantly looser than when I walked in. A few things to know before booking: the massage areas are separated by curtains rather than private rooms. While this didn't take away from the quality of the massage, noise does travel throughout the facility. During my session, I could hear guests checking in, conversations at the front desk, and people being escorted to their treatment areas. If you're looking for complete silence or total privacy, it's something to keep in mind. I also noticed that this location has a sauna available, though it was never mentioned or offered during my visit. If you're interested in using it, I'd recommend asking when you check in. Overall, the exceptional massage quality, welcoming staff, and thoughtful amenities far outweighed the minor drawbacks. While the open-concept layout may not be ideal for those seeking complete quiet and privacy, the skill of the massage therapists and the warm customer service make this a place I would happily return to. Vollra provided one of the best massages I've ever received, and I'll absolutely be booking again. Be sure to ask about their stamp card rewards program if you plan to go back.

I got the 70-minute combo massage, which includes both foot and back treatment. This occurs in the shared community space with clothes on. I was the only one there on a Saturday late afternoon, no other customers present during my session, and I'm pretty sure my masseur (possibly the owner) was the only worker on site. He had his phone closeby during the massage, which he checked once when it beeped. But he ignored it the rest of the time. Soft music played in the background, but all of the sounds from the street outside and through the walls could still be heard. I didn't mind, cuz the massage was really good which is what matters most to me. My masseur had a unique method of applying pressure and strength, using mainly elbows and knees on my back. Be aware that the back massage was done over a fairly thick sheet/blanket, but the pressure was deep enough to be effective. He was thorough, especially on my legs and feet. Targeted my hamstrings, shins, and outer muscles of the legs which is where I needed it most. The fast rubbing made me a bit numb, but when he slowed down, I was on cloud nine. And he applied pressure to all the right parts of each foot, too. None of it was painful. It didn't feel rushed either, so this place gives a true "foot massage". The guy was friendly, and prefers cash payments, but I only had enough cash for a tip. I was able pay with a credit card for the massage itself, with an additional $2 fee for the charge.
