After my poor ThinkPad (which was only 3 years +few months old) refused to boot up, I feared for the worse. The OS was Windows Vista, and as soon as I installed the 2nd service pack (which took 4 hours and I waited until 3 weeks ago to install it), my laptop seemed fine-just unusually a little slower. However, I am not the most graceful of people, and I dropped the computer for the 3rd time in 3 years. I saw a few cracks and I knew I probably damaged the HD. It probably didn't help that my cats used the laptop as a bed and scratched at it... Anyhow, I took it to Onyx. My boyfriend has a 6 year old Mac PowerBook that suffered a lot of falls/spills/cat naps and Onyx saved and restored it (it works like new!), so I knew they could make miracles happen 'Lo and behold, it was my HD that was completely corrupted. The very next day, Ken called me and he told me that a new HD would cost around 200-300 plus I'd need to re-install Windows. I lost the Vista CDs and my windows sticker serial number had eroded off the bottom of my laptop (plus I hated Vista), so I asked how much it would cost to update to Win 7. He said around 120+. I asked if he could just get my info off the computer, and he said, "No problem, just bring in your external HD." He didn't try to disuade me to fix the HD and ever agreed I should probably just get a new computer. Not being completely attached to my ThinkPad (I tend to upgrade every 4 years anyhow), I decided to chuck it goodbye and just get them to save all my data. I discovered Onyx Consulting by pure chance on the back of a Kroger grocery receipt this Fall, even though I've been living in the Decatur area for many years. A couple of weeks later, I had some questions about what kind of options would be best for a Windows laptop that I was considering, so I stopped by and they spent a lot of time giving me useful (and free) advice, even though it was the first time I had been to their store. Wouldn't you know it, about a month after that, my wife's six year old PowerBook G4 died, so I took it to Onyx and they confirmed that the hard drive had crashed. They would have replaced the drive if I had asked, but I decided to order a new MacBook Pro. I did it through Onyx because they offered to install all my backed up software and files onto the new laptop for free, including the copy of Microsoft Office, which I bought through them. One very nice added touch that's well worth mentioning: A couple of days after placing my order, the Intel i7 version was released, and they took the initiative to call and see if I wanted to upgrade, for the same price, even though I might have to wait an extra week. When it did arrive, they had it ready for pickup the next afternoon. Throughout the whole process, Matthew would call and send E-Mails with updates without me even asking. Of note, my next door neighbor, who is quite knowledgeable about all things Apple, said the Lenox Apple store uses Onyx for repairing computers brought to Lenox; so why not deal directly with the guys who are going to do the work! read more

Have been dealing with these guys for years now, and would have to say that they are among my favorite companies of any kind. So impressed was I with the service I was getting for all my computers (I own a post-production video company), that years ago I began purchasing all my Macs from them. Not only was the price better than right, but, because I purchased the computers at Onyx, they go on the bench IMMEDIATELY in the event of a problem. This is critical when your business depends so much on computers. Recently, on of my computers needed repair while I was out of town. Unable to get back into Atlanta until Friday night, I was a bit panicked because I needed to utilize the Mac Pro over the weekend. I called and asked if there was any way someone could meet me there Saturday morning and help me to retrieve the computer, even though they are closed on Saturdays. No problem, they said. Just give us a time. They were on time and didn't act put out at all by my request. Amazing customer service combined with technical excellence and fair prices. I don't often recommend companies -- as most are impersonal and rather mediocre -- but I can wholeheartedly recommend Onyx Consulting for all services they offer. read more

I brought my son's Macbook Pro here for repair. Onyx did not inform me (nor did Apple) that it was under a safety recall for batteries overheating. We decided to fix a couple of other, minor, non-essential items on the laptop because, with Apple, there are flat fees for certain level repairs. So, once you are paying for one repair, you might as well get everything you can think of (that is not essential) fixed. I found out about the recall after I paid for and picked up the computer. Apple would not refund the money for the repair unless I had brought it directly to one of their own stores (instead of their "authorized repair facility.") Apple did say that they would have refunded the entire $695, had I brought it directly to them. Onyx refuses to issue any refund. I would never have them fix anything again. This is an awful way to treat a customer. As an authorized repair facility, I am certain that they had known about the recall for 4 months. read more

I was recently in the middle of several very large projects when my Entourage simply wouldn't open, nor would it rebuild the database. Knowing that Entourage is not the best mail client on the Mac, I did not have high hopes for salvaging the 2 weeks of email that I had lost. In fact, after calling a couple of places, I pretty much had no hope. However, I called Onyx and asked if it was something they could handle. They didn't give me false hope, but told me I could bring it in. After only a few hours, I found out that they could actually retrieve the information, forward it to my current email identity (so I didn't lose the new email) and the charge was more than reasonable. i loved working with Ken @ this Decatur location. I had troubles with a 2 month old I-Mac whose hard drive just fried. Ken was patient with my questions, tried everything he could, then once it was clear I'd need to replace it, he rescued all my docs, music and photos. He then packed up my I-mac, helped me ship it back to Apple to be replaced. The very day that my new, 2nd I-mac arrived, Ken restored all docs to it, reconfigured things & created an external hard drive for me. He went beyond the call of duty with my questions, let me vent, then cheerfully helped me figure out next steps & solutions. He really knows what he's doing. The professionals at Onyx are just that - professional. Our company has used them for several years now and they've been able to handle anything we've thrown at them. Their staff is always timely in responding to questions that may arise. Specifically, I remember several times, whether I was working from home or the office, when something needed their attention and within MINUTES I had a professional remotely logged -in and addressing my needs. Without an appointment, I stopped in and was greeted by Brandon, the shop manager. I was immediately impressed by his friendly and professional manner. I dropped off the computer Friday around noon and two hours later I was called by Brandon, who informed me the computer was fixed and I could pick it up any time! This took place after two less than stellar visits to Best Buy Geek Squad. I've gone in several times and been so impressed with the helpful attitude. All my files mysteriously disappeared from my laptop twice in the last two months. Conversations with Dell got me nowhere but took a long time. Fortunately, I restored them with Carbonite. The folks at Onyx (in this case, the ever-helpful Cameron) let me come in twice and ask a few questions. The first time we decided I didn't need to leave the computer with them. Had another great experience at Onyx in Decatur. I had continued problems with my iMac shutting down, freezing up, giving the dreaded repeating three tones . . . They were great in trying to determine the problem and were very thorough in the troubleshooting. It took two trips in but they welcomed me back after making it clear that I should return if the problems persisted. After a few rounds of trial and error, trying different solutions, my problem was fixed with minimal cost. They've fixed (or educated me about) tons of stuff over the counter, and when I needed a more expensive upgrade, they fixed all the glitches that went along with that. Charles who assisted me from beginning to end with what options I had with my 2014 MacBook Air which refused to turn on was extremely professional, patient and went above and beyond to help me from recovering my data to advising me on replacing my dead powerbook. I am among the least savvy computer user around yet at no moment did I feel uncomfortable with him when asking questions that would ordinarily have made any computer expert roll his eyes. Onyx Consulting is an excellent company run by super friendly people who know what they're doing. I have used them over the past several years, and always been happy. Their customer service staff are excellent. BUT BEWARE! If you use crutches or a cane, it's easy to break your neck trying to get into the lobby due to the lack of a hand railings starting at the parking area. My Mac was running slow so iHospital put in 8gb of ram -- way over Apple specs -- and said my hard drive crashed and to order a new one. I did. Luckily an angel told me about ONYX. They powered up -- it had NOT crashed -- and just added more ram (to the specifications) and my computer is running like a dream. This is the best place! I thought I had been scammed at home by a threatening pop up. As it turns out I had. Armin Karnacic assisted me when I walked in and was very kind, non judgemental and quickly removed any evidence. I lost the money I had paid the Systeye Support people but am very happy to have my computer returned to it's previous state. I will do business with only Onyx from now on. I personally have not used Onyx Consulting for a repair, but if their customer service is as good in person, as it is over the phone, I am so willing to give them a try. I have a broken iPhone, and called them as a certified iPhone service provider. I spoke with Steve, who determined that my problem was a little more complicated, and would necessitate them shipping my phone off to Apple to be fixed. Love this place. I went in with ongoing email issues and they fixed it in minutes - and no drive to the Perimeter Apple store. The best. I'd heard they were great, but it was my first time there and I'm sold. I know all issues won't be resolved so quickly, but being able to drop it off so close to home is priceless.
