Recently I came across an advertisement for float therapy at Serenus here in Bloomington. I'm a…read morevery skeptical person and let the manager and owner know. They both encouraged me to do some research and to try it before I made my final judgement. I did some follow up research and it turns out that the origins of float therapy have been around for about 40-50 years. I've had a lot of stress so far this year so I decided to just give it a try. There is actual scientific research that has been done on this therapy. I will let you do your own research in that area so you can make up your mind about the potential benefits of this therapy. The following is my account of my experience. I arrived and was warmly greeted by the manager(Derrick) and the owner(Joseph). They quickly got me checked in and then the manager gave me a quick tour of the facility. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and definitely puts off a relaxing vibe. Once my tour was over, he showed me to the room where I would be floating and gave me what I considered to be a very thorough orientation on what to do, how to do it, how everything worked, and even included a warning on how to wipe my hair at the end of the session and being careful on getting out(you'll be a little slippery afterwards-more on that later). Like I said, a very thorough orientation. After my orientation, he started the music, flipped the sign on the door to indicate that the room was occupied and left me to it. I locked the door to the very private room, reviewed my surroundings and then started on the routine that he had laid out for me. When I first set up my appointment I was worried that 60 minutes in this pod, alone with my thoughts, would be boring and I'd wind up ending early. I was definitely wrong. I wondered a couple of times during the session how long I had been in there. But before I knew it the light in the pod had kicked on and the music started back up indicating that my session was up. I remembered previous instructions to wipe my hair back after I was done to ensure I didn't get any salt in my eyes, carefully exited, and showered. Be careful when you exit. The salt makes you extremely slippery. The shower is right next to the pod though so you can quickly remedy this. The salt washes off easily with the bodywash and shampoos so no worries there. After my shower, I checked the clock on my phone because I was just sure that I hadn't been in that pod for a whole 60 minutes. But sure enough, I had. Wow. Just wow. Overall, my experience was very positive, from interacting with the owner via facebook beforehand, to checking in, the float, and relaxing after. The only thing that wasn't recommended to me that I honestly should have thought of myself was to bring a comb for afterwards. I left feeling relaxed but energized. I definitely recommend you do some research about floating and then try it out for yourself. The price tag can be a little bit of a sticker shock but there are ways to reduce your cost if you decide to do it regularly and I think they have a special for 1st time floaters. I can be a bit of tightwad but i enjoyed the experience enough to tell you that I will definitely be back, next time with a comb and a voice recorder. Advice: don't set to many expectations before your 1st float, just enjoy it for whatever it turns out to be for you. Thanks again to the owner and the manager for making this a great experience and encouraging me to give it a shot. I wrote a much more detailed review about my whole experience but it was apparently too long for yelp. If you'd like to read my full review, visit their page on facebook.

The skinny: I'm surprised this float center has almost a 5 rating, it isn't nearly as nice as A…read morePlace to Float downtown although it is much more convenient if you're on the north side. At BBFC: *a few uncomfortable looking chairs near the front door vs a large relaxing lounge with cushy sofas and low lighting. *water dispenser vs citrus infused water dispenser. *less spacious rooms *rooms just aren't as nicely decorated/ finished *2 plain Jane bathrooms with hair dryer and a few other items in a basket on the toilet tank vs a large dressing room with a large mirror, hair dryer and stools. *One of the bathrooms had the toilet running and it wouldn't flush plus the hand dryer didn't work. *I could be wrong about this but the doesn't seem to be as much epsom salt in the water. I found it much easier to sit in the tub and it wasn't as slippery. That could be a plus but I prefer lots of salt for health reasons. Both charge $45 for a first float but you get 90 minutes at BBFC, only 60 at APLF. You pay a one time $15 membership fee at APTF, none at BBFC. One float costs $59 at APTF, $65 at BBFC. Discounts for multiple floats, difficult to compare. For me,, BBFC has a more convenient location. Both places have great staff, towel and hair dryer provided. private in room shower with soap/shampoo/conditioner and convenient parking. A Place to Float is just... nicer. Consider bringing your own: bathing suit, deodorant, brush, curling iron etc. All personal preferences of course.

This was our first time, and Jessica was very helpful in explaining what to expect to me when I called to book as well as when we arrived. We chose the float pods, but they do have open tanks if you're worried about feeling claustrophobic. I did have a moment of panic when I opened my eyes at one point because it was complete blackness, but I focused on my breathing and relaxed into it. You can opt to leave the light on if you like as well. Tidbits- *Don't wear lotion, perfume, makeup, etc if you can help it. You have to shower off before getting in anyway. *You can doc your phone in an aux cord and play music if you like. Personal preference! *I was surprised at the quality of the available shampoo/conditioner after. I expected stringy hotel shampoo hair, but I'm feeling quite soft! Could it be all the salt? Idk. *I was a little worried about being spooked when the lights and jets came back on, but it was a gentle nudge to come back to reality! *Currently, the do not have signage on their store front, so we passed it at first. *Arrive ~10 min early for first float to sign waiver and get the tutorial. Overall, great experience! Good for just relaxation, general unplugging or trying to hone your meditation skills. I am considering a monthly float (which offers a discounted price) in the future.
