If you don't go through with a repair, then they will keep the $50. It would rather stink to pay $50, have them come out and then the price is way more than other estimates that I've already received and then I'm out $50 and have to still pay additional money for someone else to do it? No thanks. Why would I have them come out when they can't even give me an estimate. I told them what the issue was, other establishments were able to give me an estimate at the least.

Ray arrived and wasted no time troubleshooting and discovering a clogged screen about 110 ft in the ground. Unfortunately, the technique that works best also has the well down for a couple days. While he was treating the area, we took a small overnight trip. Upon our return the next afternoon, we were surprised to see Ray was reassembling the well. One successful test later, we were back in action. It's nice to know whether we need a new dug or repairs to an existing system Ray is there to make it happen. 10/25

He flushed our well too, which has vastly improved the quality of the water. What was stinky water full of sediment, we can now drink! After reviewing both…read moreGoogle and Yelp reviews for well contractors in the area we settled on Wyckoff Well Drilling based on all the positive reviews where Google is a 5 star average! I called the business at 7:30 am, a time that most businesses of this nature were closed and was surprised to reach a human voice on the other end end. Seeing that we were literally out of water and in a lurch the owner, Robert, was able to juggle his full schedule and was get to our house less than an hour after contacting him. Upon arrival Robert was able to quickly diagnose our issue as a failed pressure switch and had parts on hand to effect the repair all within an hours timeframe. The service call with labor and parts came to $140 which was very very reasonable in my mind. I truly expected it to be much more due to all the price gouging I have seen in this area in the past and definately did not expect to be up and running again within 2 hours of my original call. Nice! Throughout the process Robert and his grandson Trevor were super friendly and explained what was going on throughout the process showing great patience with my questions as he went about the business of the repair. During the repair process he identified that the pressure switch had failed as a result of my 35 year old pressure tank being near end of useful life where the bladder was clearly starting to fail. He explained to me that we could get a few more years out of my old tank but the tradeoff was that my well pump which is also 35 years old was getting cycled way more than it should which could lead to a an earlier failure of that key component which would be a much more expensive repair on the order of $3500. At no point did he pressure me to replace the pressure tank but instead provided key data/information I needed to make an informed decision all the while stating I could push this tank replacement off maybe a couple more years. Being a retired engineer I appreciated both his honesty and candor where he presented the facts/data which is the way all contractors should act and most dont and let me make up my own mind where I decided to proceed with the replacement of the pressure tank in order to extend the life of my old more expensive well pump which he did two days later. No over the top pressure tactics here and the usual scare tactics that contractors like use. Again nice! Overall I was completely satisfied with the work he did on my well system and how he handled his business. Reasonable cost, first class work and a friendly demeanor are hard to beat in my book and I will definately contacting him for any well issues I have in the future. Five stars in my book.

After his dad's passing, him and his wife prepared the home in order to list it. I've known this couple for a long time - they are the most amazing people. The kind of people who would drop everything and help you in a time of need. Honestly, I had never even heard them speak poorly about anyone... until Layman & Sons came into the picture. The home needed a new well in order to be financed by the buyer they accepted an offer from. A contract was in place for the price, a large deposit was paid, and Layman & Sons verbally agreed to allow the balance of the new well to be paid after closing in a few months. During the install, the lack of communication from Layman & Sons made it impossible to provide updates to the buyers. With growing concerns about no one showing up, reports not being sent to the County, and the owner of the company, Phil, verbally assaulting Mrs. Seller, I began communicating directly with Phil's wife Karen. She gave me a backhanded apology for Phil's behavior, acknowledging that he was rude to Mrs. Seller (never actually apologizing) and admitting that "He doesn't explain things well." She then excused his behavior by saying he was frustrated and had a man-cold. As a business owner myself, I get frustrated too, but I would never take it out on a client. His lack of control over his emotions, his inability to communicate effectively & take accountability, and his total disregard for showing up to the jobsite are just a few ways he is completely unprofessional. As if that weren't enough, in order to get back at the sellers, he went back on his word and filed a lien on the property. Even his wife, Karen, knew it was wrong of him to do that. She texted me "I asked him not to but he did it anyway." Take a look at the way he responds to any negative review, because that's the kind of "man" you'll be dealing with if you hire Layman & Sons. He has caused my clients so much undeserved stress. I will never recommend them to anyone. I don't want my clients going through what these clients had to endure.

We originally chose B.W. Layman & Sons because they were flexible with the payment, which we…read moreappreciated at the time. But now, we truly regret going with them. From the very beginning, we made it clear our timeline was urgent due to selling the house, yet communication was extremely poor. They often arrived without notice or didn't show up at all, including the owner, Phil Layman, who personally no-showed and simply said he "wasn't feeling good" without offering any solution. Afterward, he assumed he could come and go because the door was unlocked -- which was only unlocked because he said he would be there that day. He later scheduled another visit between 8-9 AM, but no one arrived until around 4 PM after multiple calls from me. We don't live at the property, so I specifically asked for photos of the completed work -- that request was completely ignored. On top of that, they left multiple items and old well materials scattered throughout the yard (as pictured), which should have been cleaned up and removed after the job was finished. It looked unprofessional and created more work for us while preparing the home for selling. Throughout the entire process, I constantly felt like I had to reach out for information that they should have been explaining. There was zero proactive communication -- no updates, no clarity, and no effort to make sure I understood what was being done on my property. This is an old farmhouse, and we were under the impression the pipe feeding the outside spigots would be replaced as part of the well work, but no one ever communicated that it required a separate permit or procedure. I only learned this through the Oakland County Health Department -- not from Layman & Sons. Because the spigots still weren't working, I contacted another well company and texted Layman's about deducting incomplete work from the bill, but received no response for days. When I finally reached Phil by phone, he admitted he hadn't looked at my messages and became verbally disrespectful, yelling and calling me "f***ing crazy," which was completely unacceptable. In 10+ years working in similar service industries, I have never seen customer service handled this poorly -- especially from the owner of a business, who you would expect to want to keep customers informed, respected, and satisfied. All I wanted was communication and the work I was paying for. Instead, I was met with delays, silence, left-behind debris, unfinished tasks, lack of explanations, and verbal abuse. As a customer unfamiliar with well systems, I expected basic updates, guidance, and professionalism. Half the time they didn't answer the phone, leaving us completely in the dark during an already stressful home sale. Despite maintaining consistent and transparent communication, our real estate agent was in direct contact with Karen (Phil Layman's wife) regarding the status of our home sale so they would know exactly when final payment would be received, as we had agreed to pay the remaining balance in full at closing. We had originally communicated that we were scheduled to close in December; however, the deal unexpectedly fell through due to issues on the buyer's end -- something entirely outside of our control. Even with that setback, we continued to keep them informed and stayed in contact regarding the updated timeline. Despite this ongoing communication and good-faith effort on our part, we received a letter a few days later stating that a lien had been placed on our home for the outstanding balance. While we understood their right to secure payment, it was surprising and frustrating given the consistent updates and transparency we had provided throughout the process. As we prepared for closing, we discovered the payoff amount Phil Layman provided to the title company was over $800 higher than both the county-recorded lien and the invoice we were given. When my husband called to understand the discrepancy, Phil said he added legal fees and interest because payment hadn't been received -- charges that were never communicated, documented, or agreed to. We only learned about them the day before closing, which caused issues with the title company, especially since the invoices he had been sending us never reflected these added fees. During that call, Phil dismissed concerns about his prior behavior, called me "crazy," spoke over my husband, accused us of being "irate," and hung up. At that point, we chose to move forward just to be done with the situation. I wish I had gone with any other company. I cannot recommend B.W. Layman & Sons under any circumstances.
