I went there to get my glasses fix. The screw came off and the guy fixed it really quick with care and professional.

This is the best optometrist I've had in NYC and I plan to stick with them. Let's start with the positive: the doctor. He is amazing, patient and understanding. He takes his time to explain and LISTENS to your questions and even complaints (like I had) He has a love for Pokémon so that was also a plus. Ok here's the negative: the staff. Why is it always the staff?! Don't they know the front office is representative of the doctor? Most people have to deal with them more than the doctor. They made 3 mistakes and truly pissed me off. One, they quoted me $100 for my contacts but they were actually free because of my insurance. Two, they never called me when my contacts came in. So when I finally called to get an update they said they did call me but I quickly said I never got a call nor a voicemail. She never ever uttered an apology. An apology would have diffused my irritation. Three, I specially asked what time they closed and she said 6pm. I arrived there a little before 5:30pm (they are a 30 minute walk from my house) and they were completely closed for the day. I called the next day, and told the same girl what happened and yet no apology yet again! The customer service is truly horrible but the doctor really makes up for it. There were only 2 girls working there the last time I was there so I'm not sure who I spoke with but these girls really need some manners. read more

I had a great experience here when coming for an eye exam. Dr Kim was very friendly and had a relaxed demeanor. He pointed out a potential anomaly with my right eye and recommended to have more detailed photos taken of my eyes so he could examine this in more detail (at no extra cost). While it turned out to be likely nothing of concern, I'm glad he did this as it's always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your health. I liked his explanation of the possible issue - it was detailed but also straightforward and not jargon-y. The decor of the place is also very nice, it's quite unique and has character (there's an arcade machine in the waiting room and superhero posters in the exam rooms, to name a few). Also Dr Kim proactively offered to send my prescription to my email. Surprisingly, of the many optometrists I've visited, Dr Kim was the first to ever do this. Normally I have to at least ask for it and sometimes it's like pulling teeth to get it done at other places. Finally Dr Kim's staff seem to like him. It's encouraging to see signs of a healthy workplace environment, and it makes me want to go back more as a customer/patient. read more

What a great experience! I had no idea I even had vision coverage on my insurance, but Dr. Kim helped me figure it out and I ended up saving A TON of money. Whoa! The exam itself was high-tech and super thorough. A past optometrist sold me expensive lenses for an astigmatism that Dr. Kim told me was too mild to require correction. No needless charges or weird lenses that made me feel funny. Another plus! The selection of frames was perfect -- not so big that it was confusing and overstimulating, but large enough and representing a wide enough range in price that I was able to find the perfect designer frames. (I splurged a little because I saved so much with my insurance!) However, I could have walked out without spending a dime. Shocking! Dr. Kim and the rest of his staff are kind and attentive, and the retail space itself is very cool. AND they have a Street Fighter II arcade cabinet that you can play while you're waiting. Not much to say other than Dr. Kim is great. Patient, kind, thorough, and takes his time answering questions and making you feel comfortable. I was anxious because a previous doctor mentioned I was at risk for glaucoma, but did it in a way where I got so freaked I didn't go to an eye doctor for 2 years. Went back today and saw Dr. Kim again, and while he agreed with her assessment, he explained everything in such a way that I left not feeling freaked out, but confident that regardless, I'll be in good hands. read more

What a wonderful experience!!! I knowwwwww, I am excitedly writing about a visit to an optometrist, what?! Why you may ask, well because this has been the best experience, I have ever had at an eye doctor. Dr. Kim, is awesome!!! Extremely professional, highly thorough in testing, makes you feel comfortable, kindly answers questions no matter how numerous they are, the equipment used is extremely modern, his assisting staff members are just so nice and very professional. The office is comfortable and modern. I love the turntable and record decor, and fun music playing, nice huge chalkboard wall which being an artist & educator the first thing you want to do is draw, or write although, I did not. There seems to be a plethora of very stylish glasses to select from, if necessary. Overall, after visiting Optoid, I don't think, I will ever go anywhere else for eye care. Dr. Kim and his staff were incredibly helpful. I felt like a patient who was being treated rather than a number in a line (as you are in the chain stores all through the city.) I was able to get the glasses I needed with the frames I wanted with a short turnover. Dr Kim was amazing, patient, gentle and very thorough. This was also the most technologically-advanced optical shop I've ever been to. It was also the least invasive dilated eye exam I've ever had -- and I've had them in Chicago and Boston. No one tried to hard sell glasses and they were so patient as I hung out around the store making up my mind. They let me take my time to decide and did not make me feel rushed or uncomfortable. This is the second time my husband and I have gone to Doctor Kim for eye exams and glasses, and both times we were very impressed by the level of care and professionalism we found. I've been to other opticians where the eye exam was almost perfunctory, but Doctor Kim takes the time to talk to you about your concerns and changes in your vision. And we were pleasantly surprised when the glasses we had been told would be ready in a week were actually ready to pick up in two days. Dr. Kim is very kind and his office has a positive atmosphere. You can tell his workers don't mind being there and are very helpful. He accommodates patients needs and listens. Also, a great neighborhood to be located in. I love the 3D printed glasses! There is nothing like them anywhere else in NYC, let alone this area. Will be wearing them all the time now. Dr. Kim is great and attentive; however, his staff sometimes seem inexperienced, unmannered, and untrained. I was there for a post op check up and his male reception staff busted into the room while Dr. Kim was using a machine to poke my eye to check pressure. Really? Initially thought I had found the best doctor's office. High-tech equipment and nice office staff, which is for some reason so rare. Told the doctor that I was going to buy contacts online but he handed me $75 dollars worth of loose contacts and billed my insurance. Also did not check my eye pressure. read more

I'm a first-time patient of Dr. Kim. When I first arrived to his office, I was immediately greeted by one of the staff, and I started the paperwork process. The staff were attentive and courteous and I saw Dr. Kim within minutes of completing my paperwork. Dr. Kim was congenial, professional, and efficient. I got my eyes checked, updated my prescription, and was out of the door within an hour. I would definitely visit him again. read more

I returned to pick up my eyeglasses today. I received my exam on January 6th, and it took longer than Dr. Kim's staffer originally quoted (4-5 days) to receive the eyeglasses, based on the fact that the people who usually fit the lenses into the glasses were having some sort of hiccup at their office. So, the lenses were actually installed by dr. Kim (or, presumably, by someone in his office). 10 days from appointment to pick-up of the eyeglasses, and not the quoted 4-5 days, unfortunately. Everything went smoothly with the pick-up, except that when I returned home I noticed that the glasses were not sitting tight enough on my face, and when placed upside down on a flat surface, one of the glasses' arms was not fully flush on the flat surface of a table. I returned to the office and Dr. Kim bent the arms so that they curl around my ears more tightly. Even after adjustment though, the same arm still didn't sit flush on a flat surface when I returned to the apartment. I just now bent the arm slightly, and it NOW sits flush on a flat surface. Dr. Kim didn't seem particularly attendant to the adjustment of the glasses overall. As I watched him adjust them, though, I learned how to adjust the arm, and so used what I'd seen him do to fix the arm myself, at home. read more

Dr Kim really surprised me with his ability to handle my complicated eye condition. I have kerataconus which is a pretty hard condition to treat, you need special hard contact lenses that are hard to find and getting the right fit is always a challenge. Dr Kim really nailed it. Stopped in the other day because I needed my IPD measured for a new VR headset. My old opto/script didn't have it, and many optometrists for whatever reason don't like to give it out. I basically walked in, they checked my insurance, and since I just wanted my IPD he gave me a totally fair price and ended up giving me a quick exam anyways. Dr Kim was fast, fair, and professional and honestly I'd probably come back if I was looking for new glasses. read more

Outstanding experience. First off, you'll be hard-pressed to find a more qualified Optometrist in the area. Dr. Kim knows his stuff and gives a very thorough exam which I've never quite found to be the case in chain opticals. I was impressed not only with his frame selection, but he also designs and 3D prints his own custom frames. You can tell he has great pride in his office, too, which he designed from the ground up. It's hip and unique and certainly belongs in Brooklyn. As any business owner, he wants patients to remember it and spread the word to others. In Dr. Kim's case, he makes it easy to do so. As an almost 30 year old woman going in to get her first pair of glasses, I was a tad nervous. Despite the fact that I failed my eye exam, I feel I picked a winning doctor. Dr James Kim makes you feel at ease despite all of the close eye action happening. On top of everything, my prescription glasses came in three days later allowing me to pick them up just in time to see Deadpool in theatres. I am so excited to not have to strain to watch movies and that I can safely hit the roads on a whim. I would recommend Dr. Kim to anyone! read more
