Instead of doing even the most basic verification, deputies took my ex's word at face value and decided to throw me in jail. I ended up sitting in custody for four days over something that clearly wasn't a crime--proved by the fact that the charges were dropped. That tells you everything you need to know about how poorly this situation was handled. This wasn't law enforcement--it was lazy decision-making and a lack of proper training. No common sense, no investigation, just straight to arrest. Situations like this shouldn't happen, yet here we are. If this is the level of judgment being used, it's honestly concerning. On Sunday morning 5/31 at about 10:50am, I took my 9 year old son with me into the ladies public bathroom located at the Dana Point Jetty/Harbor. I hold him after he was done to go ahead and wash his hands while I was in the other stall, finishing up. Then I heard a lady's voice asking why he was using the ladies bathroom. He said he was with me. It was the parking lot enforcement officer. At least I think she was, she was only wearing a bright yellow vest in plain clothing. I stopped her mid voice and said he's with me. That should have been the end of her conversation with a nine year old. Then she proceeded to tell him that he is a big boy and needs to be using the men's public bathroom in the other building. And when I came out, she asked why he was using the women's bathroom with me. I told her that he is using it with me because he's nine years old. I am not sending him into a public restroom at the park/harbor with grown men and transients that roam the area. She proceeded to argue with me about how the public restrooms are safe in the harbor and how I should have sent him to the men's restroom or left him outside. Maybe she expected me to go into the men's public restroom at the park and scope it out before sending a nine year old boy inside rather than taking him into the ladies room with me. 1) She should have stopped conversation with a nine year old when I identified myself as the adult. 2) Her opinion about how "safe" the public restrooms is irrelevant when it comes to the safety of a nine year old child. She should not be telling someone how to parent a child. I tried calling the non emergency OC Sheriff number located on the payment booth and it went to a different number and voicemail that did not even identify themselves as the Sheriff Sheriff's Department. Please update your contact information and do a better job of training your employees and volunteers. Also, when I came out of the bathroom the lady was harassing some teenage kids about their bait and said they should be leaving it at home and buying it from the store front. The unprofessional behavior of this lady leads me to suggest that there needs to be more training in all areas of diversity, ageism and sexism for employees. read more

Biased and Unfair Treatment by Officer Stephens on Alicia Parkway I'm writing to formally express my deep concern about the behavior of Officer Stephens, who stopped me near Kite Hill on Alicia Parkway and issued a speeding ticket--despite the fact that I was not speeding. As a proud service member of the U.S. Army, I've dedicated myself to protecting this country and the freedoms we all enjoy. It was both disappointing and disturbing to be treated with clear disrespect and what felt like racial profiling. Officer Stephens made inappropriate comments, including questioning my appearance (specifically, why I was wearing earrings) and spoke to me in a dismissive and demeaning manner. He did not allow me to speak or explain anything during the stop. His conduct was unprofessional and, in my opinion, discriminatory. I strongly believe Officer Stephens is in need of immediate diversity and sensitivity training. This type of behavior undermines public trust and reflects poorly on the department as a whole. I hope this complaint is taken seriously. As I was taking a picture of my grandpa with the beautiful lights in the background, Officer Jensen drove by and offered to take the photo for us. Not only did he take a great picture, but when I mentioned that my grandpa is a big fan of law enforcement, he graciously agreed to take a photo with him as well. Just got pulled over for registration violation (it was paid but having trouble getting smog after it sat idle for a year). You would have thought I was a federal fugitive the way I was treated. They seem not to care. Placed a machine off the PCH highway along selva and PCH highway that cars should not drive fast and make car noise exhaust sounds. Nothing has deterred these drivers. It seems it has gotten worse. Only thing to stop it is for the police to sit and patrol the area to catch them. As I am home living off PCH and Selva I can tell you tonight from 6 pm to now it has been non stop noise. It sounds like we live on a race track. When I started to explain to police they abruptly get off and do not seem to care or have any interest in Dana Point safety or our area. I apologized for the wasted time and he replied "please don't apologize, this is the most important thing I have done all day, the welfare of our citizens is the most important thing." Well here I am writing a review on the OC Sheriff department -who knew.. With all the bad PR in the world today about peace officers and sheriffs I thought it was my civil duty - lol - to write a review. I was pulled over yesterday on Alicia parkway ( I think that was it) turning into the 73 toll road ( south ). Not knowing where to pull over as I was driving on the on ramp, with lights flashing behind me and that beeping sound they make when trying to people to pull over, I was a bit confused as to where to pull over with limited space- however I pulled over right there in the on ramp - and not knowing why they pulled me over ????? Two of the biggest sheriffs came walking up to the passages side and asked the question "do you know why we pulled you over " my response - no, why? "Because you were on your cell phone " My reply, of course with a smile- no I wasn't I placed my cell phone from the passenger seat to my lap being I can hear the navigation more clearly - They left with my CDL and insurance and walked back to their car- oh goodness, here I go getting a big fat ticket right before the holidays- ugh - like I need that this time if the year. They both come back and tell me they are giving me a verbal warning to get a hands free hand set for my phone- smile and tell me to have a great day and to drive safely - Holy moly- no ticket for me just two kind sheriffs doing their job! Thank you! You rock! I guess it's all that good karma for paying it forward and purchasing food for the unsuspected people at the drive through at del taco that I always pay for - paid off. ;) read more

If you have picked up a newspaper in either Dana Point, San Clemente or SJC lately, you would have seen the article about the top awards the OC Sheriff- Dana Point received. I know this first hand because I have had to call on them numerous times in the last 9 months because of an ongoing issue with a rogue, drug induced, crazed, maniac neighbor that thinks he makes the laws and the laws we all abide by do not apply to him. They have come out every time and treated my calls with respect and have gone out of their way to do the right thing. I can't go into much detail, like I said, it is still ongoing. Deputy Dave Cappel definitely gets things done!! 5 Stars for the Officers that come out 1 star for the lady that answers the phone when you call. They always sound like you are burdening them and sometimes a bit argumentative when you are trying to tell them what's going on. Apparently people aren't driving around enough to give out tickets so sheriffs are driving around looking at license plates to give out tickets. My registration is paid however the DMV has failed to send me my tags still. Officer Broadhead gave me a ticket for missing tags. I just can't understand how this is ok during a pandemic. I guess the city needs to make money somehow it's just rude during this time when people have no jobs. As a retired peace officer I am sincerely concerned about this agency. Police spending at local levels varies enormously by place and has become more reliant on federal money in recent years. Being a good cop is so much more than about looking good in military tactical gear. How about better training? There are lots of really good cops, but there are still a lot of cops that want to dismiss a call (kiss off), instead of investigating it. read more

I just wanted to say he came off to me as a very sweet and caring man that didn't take advantage of his position by being unnecessarily rude. I work at Walmart and I recently moved here so I don't really know anyone at all and I talk with a lot of the homeless people while on my breaks. When I was speaking with a woman, he pulled up and I assumed he was going to tell us to get off the building (I wasn't wearing my vest) but instead he just gave the woman some resources and then we began talking. I would probably give 0 stars if I could. I grew up here in Dana Point. Over the last 40 plus years I can say that they hate what they do and the people they work for. I have too many instances to recount , it would be pointless. Whomever is in charge of the Dana Point division should be reassigned. Same goes for the Sheriffs Harbor Patrol down in the harbor. The county would be better served by requiring a 4 year college degree along with a customer service background before employment. .Apparently the sheriff's department does not care if one has the dash cam video and license number of a car that pulled out from a stop sign directly in front of me today. I was on a thoroughfare. They said that there was nothing they could do. So when I asked if I had not good brakes and plowed onto this moron who was not paying attention, she interrupted, "they don't do what ifs" and hung up. I got a ticket in San Clemente for going too slow. The problem was I was following the deputy. When he slowed down I slowed down. After he stopped I passed him up and he pulled me over. The deputy initially accused me of driving under the influence as soon as he approached. When he realized that I was not drunk and knew my rights he wrote for me obstructing the road way. I did not even complain because I was really afraid of the deputy. So I took my ticket, paid it and went to traffic school. OC sheriffs are sure scary. I try my best to stay out of sheriff areas! However there are some elements who stain the reputation of the agency by their lousy attitude and disrespect for other fellow citizens. OC Sheriff Department (Field Court services on Main st) receptionist are the most rude and useless persons that any person needing to address them can ever found. There is nobody in the office but you arrive to inquire about their services and they feel is more important to take a phone call, regardless of you being present, There is not courtesy at all, no good mornings, no how can I help you no nothing just a "can I help you?" with attitude. I'm in need of serving a defendant in a civil matter and they are supposed to personally give the defendant document to appear in court and is not free.....(see) a charge of 40.00 is paid in cash. More than a month ago was requested the service and today (just because I was nearby stopped to see if the defendant was served) I was informed that they did not served him and the fee cannot be returned. This people think that everyone is a crook but let me tell you, you are wrong, OC people is civilized, decent, hardworking, and law abiding citizens. Some bad apples but not all of them. So a wake up call to this people to know that their jobs might not be secure forever, if that is what make them feel so well above others. read more

I pleaded...one guy said yes, the other just wanted to see me beg. He finally agreed and told me to wait. Had to go get my ID out of the car and when I came back, he told me he cancelled it and didn't want to have to re-enter my info. Takes too much time, he said. Really?? 51 years safely driving California freeways and roads and only 2 minor violations since 1966. The Dana Point police poorly managed a traffic stop subsequent to which a female sheriff's behavior went beyond rude and unhinged continually screaming from the street, made dishonest written and verbal allegations and threw the book at me. A Citation and a Pink Sheet giving me 5-days to complete requirements otherwise a Suspension. Off to Superior Court in Newport Beach to settle Citation but not in database as yet. Off to the City of Orange DMV Examiners office per Pink Sheet. Eye test perfect, missed one question on the written test (16/17) and the Examiner was amazed at my one DMV printout sheet. Required to find a Fedex to fax my doctor in central coast 5 sheets of medical background to complete and to take a road test. Today's driving test (roads and freeways) only failed because I drove too slowly, erring on the side of caution. Required to complete an expensive driver safety class, re-test per Examiners post-mortem and appear in Court. Hopefully, I can opt for Traffic Court to avoid an increase in my insurance with AAA and suspect I may have to pay a hefty fine. Relocated to DP just 2-weeks ago for job purposes and my first time in Orange County. My taste for OC has diminished. Exponentially. I shall never forget this female's unprofessional, immature, rude and erratic conduct. read more

I had a rental car break down on me two nights ago in Dana Point. Two OC patrol cars happened to be driving by. They couldn't have been more helpful and gracious. They had me hop in the car, then pushed the car to the curb. One of them called the rental car company using my paperwork, then put me on the phone. The officer gave me a ride home and Enterprise Rental Cars took care of everything from there, delivering another car to me at my house and towing the non-operating car. What could have taken hours and hours to handle, took about 30 mins from beginning to end, thanks largely to Dana Point's helpful police officers. read more

The Sheriffs at the airport deserve 0 stars. I get it your security. I've been in airports around the world. This is the first I've been treated like this. I'm doing pickup and was waiting for the car in front of me (who was pulling out) for me to pull fully in the pick up lane. There's barely anyone at the airport so it's not like I'm blocking traffic. I get a light shinned in my face and asked by one of the deputies why I'm not pulled all the way in "his" lane. I told him The truck in front of me is pulling out and he asks me "oh so you can read the minds of other drivers?". He then starts screaming over and over "pull all the way in". I never saw his face since he kept waving his flashlight in my face. He was so angry it was like I was a criminal. Won't volunteer to pick up a friend at that airport. Serious power tripping going on. The whole time my friend who I'm picking up was mortified. She asked if I almost ran someone over. He was THAT upset. read more
